Sunday is (the much celebrated by Hallmark), Mothers Day. I bought my mother a hand blown bud vase. A great find from an antique shop. She collects them.

I have a good mother, a great mother even. Sadly the songs about great mothers are not great.

So this is a song for everyone whose parents/mother abandoned them, ignored them, rejected them for their lifestyle, or in general sucked.

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle

Mother, should I trust the government?
Mother, will they put me in the firing line?
Is it just a waste of time?

Oh, mother.
So many questions, so little time.

While choosing a celebratory song I had to give in to the fact that, though most of us know at least one guy who would do well to sing Mother (by The Police from their album Synchronicity), to his mother this weekend, it doesn’t work when sung from a female perspective. With Mama Told Me Not To Come being so last year, and It’s Alright Ma I’m Only Bleeding, though a masterpiece, being more about authors than mothers, I end up thanking Pink Floyd for the introductory lyrics (from their song Mother), and wrap it up with a song by the first major female vocal group of the rock and roll era (wikipedia).

Here’s to you, your parenting rocks, you bought me tampons, made me wear socks.
You pulled a comb through gummy hair, while insisting thongs weren’t underwear.You bought me books, and watched me draw, told me not to call you “maw”. You said “it’s best to play outside, walk and run instead of ride”. I know your allergic to Hallmark cards, or I’d have mailed you my regards. If a poet a poem I’d send. If a writer a book I’d pen. But I’m merely me, through and through. I know that’s enough, thanks to you.
