I was around 10 years old when I gained possession of a book by Ruth Rendell called Heartstones. More of a novella than a book, it was a psychologically tragic type of read, horrifyingly good, and at 10 years old I was hooked on the likes of it forever. I’ve never read anything else by her, but I kept that book for a long time. The book made the journey back from Australia with me, and hung around until I left for college. I think I liked the cover. I’d not given a thought to Rendell since that time.

Until recently when I read a couple books at a side of the road book-sale/flee market. The two books were Ruth Rendell’s Going Wrong, and A Dark-Adapted Eye. It was the first time I’d ever found any of her books at a used book sale, though I’m sure they are around. The books were good quick reads, mystery suspense, madness.

Thanks to The Hathor Legacy I have seen the video presentation , Werner Herzog Reads Madeline. This retelling of Madeline, by someone pretending to be Werner Herzog, is either brilliant or I am becoming common. I’m certain it’s the former. There is no doubt that it’s share worthy.

Last but not least, I will miss my good friend Suah, as she is heading back to Liberia to be with her family as her grandfather recently passed.

This is likely to keep you busy. Enough to fit in between the slices of weekend guests, hikes, tours, and debauchery.

A Song For A Friend

This weekend I am compelled to some kind of musical acknowledgment for the strife of an old friend from NYU/NYC.

Having cut off her nose to spite her face, my friend is currently stuck in Phoenix with a great job, but no real friends or lovers, and no one of like mind (or even right mind), to surround her when she needs companionship. In her words, “I am going crazy here” and “this life sucks”.

With the full understanding that there are two kinds of people in the world: those who like Neil Diamond and those who don’t, and not really caring which one of those categories you fit into, I want to honor her situation with a song that’s been called an epic of existential despair (prehistoric EMO). A song written by (plausibly), and despite the Liberace-esque attire, one of the greatest songwriters of all time, or at least the most enduring. I give you the oft parodied I Am I Said.
