Oil production affects gender relations by reducing
the presence of women in the labor force. The failure
of women to join the nonagricultural labor force
has profound social consequences: it leads to higher
fertility rates, less education for girls, and less female
influence within the family. It also has far-reaching political
consequences: when fewer women work outside
the home, they are less likely to exchange information
and overcome collective action problems; less likely to
mobilize politically, and to lobby for expanded rights;
and less likely to gain representation in government.
This leaves oil-producing states with atypically strong
patriarchal cultures and political institutions.

Using sound analysis — Yi,t - Yi,t-1 = ai + ß(xi,t-1 - xi,t-2) + (ei,t - ei,t-1) — he concludes “Petroleum perpetuates patriarchy“.

I know some of you will find it interesting. ;)

It’s an older paper I’d missed so, thanks to UTNE Petroleum = Patriarchy for the heads-up,

—
Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano has been chosen to be secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

—

Realizing it’s a lost cause, or possibly realizing it’s not their business, some have decided it might be better to try to reduce the number of abortions (not by supporting birth control efforts of course), or help those with unsupported pregnancies in other ways, and some people are pissed. Some Abortion Foes Shifting Focus From Ban to Reduction

—

And hey, Aretha number one in Rolling Stone’s List of Top Singers of all time. Only ten women in the top fifty. Who the heck votes Kurt Cobain a better singer than Bonnie Raitt, Gladys Knight, Patsy Cline, or even Christina for that matter, and since when is Dylan a singer, never mind the 7th greatest singer of all time?

I assumed they used Diebold’s cast-offs until I saw the hand ballots. I demand a recount, because some of those singers can hardly croak out a tune. You are Rolling Tone Deaf.

It was a post about when unwanted advancements go too far.

The author wrote about several recent instances where she had been given unwanted advancements from a member of the opposite sex, one in which the man actually put his hands on her. The dilemma of the author was she felt bad or uncomfortable with her negative responses, even knowing she shouldn’t feel bad about them.

The comments to her article were much of the same. Women saying they tried to ignore unwanted advancements and if an incident provoked a rude response from them they felt uncomfortable with their response, or they felt almost apologetic. It seems it is common among women to feel guilty after rebuking some jerks unwanted attention. One women theorized she had been brought up too well. Being rude was just not what she was taught. This “being brought up too well” thing evidently makes handling these kind of unwanted advancements more difficult. The commentary led me to believe this is a common feeling among women. Much more common than I would have thought. Coupling the above with the conversation after my Saturday night out with friends, my belief seems somewhat justified.

The referenced conversation took place after a couple of men thought they’d try to squeeze themselves into both our table and our conversation. That is rude and deserved immediate rebuke, but one friend felt the need to tell them she was married (she isn’t), the other said nothing ignoring them, another saying her boyfriend would be there any minute kept talking to them anyway, as if doing otherwise would be unthinkable. I asked them to leave us alone we had no interest in conversing with them. It only took a couple minutes for them to get it, and it worked. These friends — educated, employed and well traveled for their age — all said they just couldn’t come right out and say it. It was not something they felt comfortable executing, though they were happy to have someone else do it for them.

Are you kidding me? Enough is enough girlfriends. It works nine times out of ten if the guys aren’t drunk or intent on crime.

The truth is you’re not brought up well enough if you feel the need to apologize for telling someone who is annoying you to leave you alone. This is false truth which needs to be put in the garbage along with the companion truths “most women prefer the bad boy” and “the jerk always get the women”.

Most women don’t prefer the bad boy, and the jerks don’t always get the girl. One jerk, usually called the “what was I thinking” or “the mistake”, is the limit for most women.

The right response to being approached and given unwanted attention is always an unapologetic “please leave me alone”, “I’m not interested”, or in the case of unwanted touching “get your fucking hands” off of me. There is no need to discuss, feel bad, or worry you have not done the “right and polite thing”.

Leave Me Alone in many Languages

If your traveling these will help, all various forms of saying ….get lost, in some cases a tad more harsh.

Ttourne enculer les mouces

Me cago en ti

Dø(doe)dit fede pikfjæs(pikfjaes)

Ik laat een scheet in jouw richting:

Vai para o caralho

Cazzo vai via stronzo

she’ll invite you over to her house at half past nine
You’ll wear a suit, you’ll wear a tie and you’ll give your shoes a shine
You’ll take a real deep breath and knock on her front door
Her little sister will tell you she don’t live here anymore

I said she’s evil the most evil girl I’ve found
There ain’t no doubt about it, she’s the meanest girl in town

And there ain’t no doubt about it, she’s the meanest girl in town
