RIP Jon Swift

When I began blogging in college I read a lot of political blogs, and Jon Swift’s was one of the better satires out there.

Jon Swift whose real name (unknown to many but known to some), was Al Weisel, the “reasonable conservative who liked to write about politics and culture”, the freelance writers, co-author of Live Fast, Die Young: The Wild Ride of Making Rebel Without a Cause, has passed on. According to his mother, who posted of his death on a comment in his blog, he passed on February 27th.

He had a bright, funny/smart blog, and hadn’t posted in it for some time. Interestingly enough his last post a year ago was a reference to the blog post of someone who had just experienced the death of his son.

RIP Jon Swift.

An Afternoon Fart

I wanted to add some color here for the dullest and darkest month of the year. Do you think there is hidden meaning in my choosing grey, with a mere touch of purple and raspberry, to color up the blog?

In February 2006 I wrote a post called Bode, Bode, Bode. I don’t know what is more sad, the fact I’ve been blogging since before the last winter Olympics, or that I wrote a post about Bode Miller.

Evidence of the fragility of my bones came years sooner than predicted by my brother when, after being trampled by someone’s large child in the parking lot of the local ski resort on Saturday, I fell and fractured my right wrist, or distal radius as those in the know call it. So much for taking the day off from work and study to enjoy the more than predicted snowfall.

I fell on both hands, but the wrists seemed alright directly after the fall. About an hour later I realized something was wrong with my one wrist. I stayed a couple hours anyway, but on the way home I had to stop at the ER. Fortunately they now have a “you are not sick just slightly broken” section for people with minor injuries, and those people (of which I was one) get out sooner, or we are supposed to. It was 4 hours and that is considered a short stay. I had a closed reduction and application of a soft cast/splint. I am supposed to wear an arm sling for a couple of says to keep the swelling down. I see the orthopedic surgeon again on Tuesday morning. He will either hard cast it or not. I am banking on him leaving it, or putting a new soft cast on it. It doesn’t feel bad right now.

I know fracturing a wrist in the parking lot of a ski resort doesn’t make me Shaun White, but it was a good title. I’m not sure why they are making such a big thing about his chin injury, it really isn’t that big a deal considering what often happens on those boards.

I just got an email from one of my aunts, the one who went fundie many years ago. She has a winter home in Florida and is currently attending seminars in Miami on adopting Haitian children while sending emails to the family on the progress of the seminars. I think their church is like some space ship that goes around sucking in children from all over the world. I will have to see how this goes before I pass judgment on this situation.
