I had a conference in D.C. last Saturday and then headed out to the Delaware Shore with a friend. It was lovely. I hooked up with more old friends for a few wonderfully unplugged days.
Driving back over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on Tuesday the Earthquake hit. Amazingly we felt nothing. We were listening to an old Diane Rehm interview with Michael Crummy and there was no current news on. On exiting the bridge I was calling my office and couldn’t get through. It was a few minutes before the interview was interrupted to let us know about the earthquake……..go bay bridge, you are my hero.
Irene looks like just enough to cause the electricity to go off and to flood all our roads, the beach of course will take a bigger hit and I hope my friends stay safe.
I was supposed to go to NY for a meeting Monday because I’m starting a new job in October, it was one of those in in the morning out in the evening events. Doesn’t look like that will happen. Too much water.
Stay safe east coasters.
See you on the other side of the weekend.

You’re mostly correct. Usually hurricanes aren’t that much of a problem as much as the after effects such as power outages. I’ve sat through many with worst part being no power for hours, or days along with cellphone towers jammed. Basically worst case scenario is that you’re stuck home with no outward connection unless you have a really loud irritatingly noisy generator coughing up stinky carbon dioxide.
I think it might be funny how most people will think:” This isn’t such a big deal at all.” Then after the power goes out, with little outside communication, and you realize you’re stuck home with nothing to do, then people will know how much it sucks.

Oh, and that with no power most all of the food in your fridge could spoil in a day or 2, and that you can’t cook any of it unless you have propane.
I really don’t know much about how quickly electricians will be able to restore power in your area if it is lost, but if crews are spread out all across the east coast it could be a problem.
Often times electric companies will send as many people as possible from all over the country to help.

I have so little food in there as it is… some tomatoes, oranges and cheese, that it would not have been a problem. I lost power for a few hours, but I had left to go elsewhere anyway, there were parts of the city that lost it longer but we have a fair number of power outages routinely. It was no storm here, some trees down. It seems to be thew flooding was the problem this time,,,

We lost power in my place and it’s still out. I left for Starbucks where the power never goes out. Baltimore was spared most of it, just that power thing….
Yea you got it worse over there. Hope it’s back on now.

Sure, if there is another side of the weekend.
Easy for you to say, you’ve had more of those weekends without the other side than I…

Hope all is well in Maryland. And that you have plenty of Blue Moon beer stocked-up in an ice chest. Bennet is right. Power outages can be a b**ch.
And Oranges. As I’m sure you know, Blue Moon is best served with an Orange slice.

Flying Dog Classic Pale Ale for me…only because I live in the city where it’s made and..I get it for free for some reason.
The power loss was less than we usually have with a severe thunderstorm.

I’ve been cooped up with beer, my best friends, and Doctor Who.
It’s been a good weekend

I don’t mind the cooped up part for about 4 hours, then I start to go a little nuts.

We are in Toronto, delayed our return until tomorrow because of the storm.Hope your power is still on, and you remained dry. Our power is out according to our neighbor, many old trees in our part of town, but is supposed to be on tonight. Thank goodness we have no food in the frig.
Hope you made it in Ben. Toronto sounds nice and is this time of year.
