The Fragrance of the Fumes

This past week I realized that a bullet dodged may be nothing more than an opportunity lost after-all, but that is for another time.

Over the last week or so I was in and out of Seattle for a mini conference and on to Durham University Hospital where my grandmother is currently residing. My grandmother broke her neck. She was thrown from her horse and fractured her first and second cervical vertebrae — a Superman fracture. Her doctors are not quite sure why she is not paralyzed or dead, never mind without neurological deficit. They are contemplating a Halo as generally after the age of 70 they do no like to do surgery on these type of fractures, but she is healthier than most her age, and those contraptions are not used as often anymore. Currently she is only in a rigid collar on 24 hour watch (usually my grandfather), while the discussion as to what to do continues among the family. She is in a precarious situation, no one is sure of the outcome but of course we are hoping for the best.

Fire burns under work, Wimbledon, and worry. The blog smolders — this, the fragrance of the fumes.

20 Thoughts on “The Fragrance of the Fumes

  1. Sorry to read of the stressings. I’ve only known one grandmother, and she forgot who I was when I visited her a week before she died.

In lighter news, the Casey Anthony trial recap coverage is a great sedative for inducing sleep.

Oh and in that last post (you chose not to allow comments to) I admire him, but unfortunately we’re in bad times. The red elephantitous reps keep blocking progress, and blaming Obama for the crappy economy. He is right we definitely need people to be more understanding of what’s happening, but the reps are doing what they do. Using social hate & bigotry to sway opinions.
Outlook, not good….hmmmm…Hopefully this tide will flip.
    This made me peaceful

    • I have yet to find any interest in this girl’s alleged murder of her child. Children are murdered all the time, many because they starve and don’t have Penicillin or peanut butter. The gruesomeness of this case is sad, but not compelling enough to entice me to listen or watch or listen for any length of time.

  2. Good thoughts and prayers I’m sending on your grandmother’s behalf; my maternal grandmother died when I was a baby, and my paternal grandmother was essentially senile all the years I knew her growing up. Hoping your other worrysome fires are quenched soon. Thursday is certain to be an emotional rollercoaster for me; in the a.m., my sister will be burying her husband, who lost his battle with cancer yesterday afternoon. I’ll then be greeting my wonderful wife flying in from Stockholm (on her official immigration trip to get her green card) in the p.m.

Bennet’s video link is fabulous BTW.

    • I’m so sorry Rich. How awful for your sister. My thoughts are with her.

Great thoughts for you and your wife thought, that is wonderful.

  3. Sorry to hear about your grandmother’s fall but delighted that her prognosis is better than it might be. To get thrown from a horse at 70, you’re already pretty tough. Is this the grandmother you told the story about many years ago on this very blog under a whole ‘nother template? Sounds like she’s all grown up now.

    • No actually I believe that was my grandmother, the one who died when I was in college shortly after my trip with her to Chile – the anthropologist. This grandmother is the “other” grandmother. I’ve have written about her in a less adventerous and maybe less positive way The teacher, the more motherly, tepid cookie baking type, ….except for her love of riding horses…fast usually, but slower lately. Probably never again now.

    • Is this a WordPress site? I’m trying to imagine what a “whole ‘nother template six years ago” might look like. Indeed a primitive venture, to be sure.

      • Oh. And Olivia, no disrespect intended to your site’s current stature.

      • Oops. I mixed quotes. Doug never said six years, Pia did. (Incidentally Pia, I loved your PT -Father’s Day post. I may have double-commented by accident . You can fix that, I hope.)

Anyway, Miss Cooper, I just want to let you know that I totally dig your blog’s Feng Shui. That’s the truth, and a poetic truth at that!!

  4. Love the link to Sanders. I totally agree with you, and him.

  5. I just got back from the west coast myself. I forget I have a blog most days.

    Love Bernie.

Sorry about your grandmother. I wish her well, thinking of you.
    Life gets crazy sometimes.

  6. I hope she does well. I have two grandmother’s left. Neither doing too well at this time.

  7. When I read that “this” grandmother fractured her neck after falling from her horse I had an entirely different opinion of her. You have never been anything less than respectful about her which is one of the many things I admire about you–and have learned from from your blog.
Though I have been an avid reader of Cooper Culture for six years now I had no idea you have a living grandfather. It sounds as if he has his work cut out for him.
Her recovery or lack of injuries sounds miraculous–almost unbelievable. I hope she remains a medical miracle :)

  8. I meant aside from the broken neck–that should have led to so many complications. You’re made of sturdy stock.

  9. Your grandmother is in my thoughts and prayers, as well as you and your family, Miss Cooper. Hope your grandfather takes care of himself, as well. An extended hospital stay is hard on the family.

    I’ve never ridden a horse.

  10. Oh coop sorry to hear about your grandmother. I’ll keep her in my prayers for sure.
. She is some lucky women. I’d move to see those xrays.

  11. I hope the best for your grandmother as well, Miss Cooper. As much as I hate visiting hospitals, there’s something to be said about them to draw out the feelings of truly being bonded with a person for life.

  12. I’m praying for your grandmother cooper. I like riding horses, but at her age I imagine they can be dangerous.

I love Seattle. Too bad you couldn’t have stayed for a few days.

  13. The angels must have softened your Grandmother’s landing. I shall gladly pray for her, your Grandfather, and all of the doctors, nurses and caregivers.
