Getting Myself Back To The Garden

Speaking of being “stardust, golden, getting myself back to the garden, and getting my soul free”:

I’m off to Panama. Originally I was going to Costa Rica, but things have changed. My traveling companions debated, argued, and finally presented me with a persuasive five hour, ten minute, non-stop flight.

With only a few days to spare Panama appears to be a good option. Considering I’ve been to Costa Rica several times it’s also a wiser, or at least a slightly more adventurous choice. It’s possible we’ll be able to get a couple days of surfing via several options we’ve mapped out via one road.

We thought of Nicaragua, but this is a short trip and Nicaragua’s infrastructure isn’t substantial enough. I’d prefer to give my money to a country with a higher HDI, it just isn’t going to happen for such a short trip.

I hate leaving during such tumultuous time, but I’m sure when I return (in a few short days), skillful politicians and their media muses will still be using the same old rhetorical strategies to subvert the objectives of political discourse and manipulate the populace by appealing to emotions. Charlie Sheen, Colonel Gaddafi, Glenn Beck, and March, will still be mad, and WAPO will still be paying the same quality of journalist that the HuffPo gets for free.

  1. Indeed, the whole motley crew will still be there; spinning, blustering, frothing at the mouth and lying to all those willing to be lied to!

    Enjoy the waves.

    No doubt about that.

    Enjoy your mini break.

  5. Enjoy your saltwater fix and Panamanian adventures (jealous here).

  6. Yes politics so slow moving unlike those waves. Should be nice weather too. Try not to get too inebriated unless you like sort of thing.

    • Yea, I don’t drink much in foreign countries especially when out at a casino or such, just as I don’t drink much unless I’m with really good friends. Besides it’s difficult to surf in humid weather with a headache.

It was nice. I liked it a lot but hope to get to the Caribbean side next time.

  7. ooh have fun! my sis is going to nicaragua nxt week!(i’m so jealous)
i’m sure panama will be fun though, and lol yes all the crazy people wld still be crazy when u return. plz check out my blog!
    xx

  8. Hope you’re having muy muy fun. I’m trying to think of something clever and/or witty to say and failing miserably

  9. Great title for a great post. I’m jealous. Haven’t had a break in what seems like forever.
Your right about WAPO that’s for sure.

You have to let me know how Panama is relative to say Costa Rica.

  10. It’s sometimes easier to get to Panama City than San Jose, or at least shorter. I was there last year. It’s quite moist but I know they have some good surf. I don’t surf so I’ve never investigated. It’s harder to get around in some cases than Costa Rica but not much. You’ll have fun and the Washington Post will still be paying for some nasty journalism when you return.

  11. I take a trip to New England and think I’m adventurous. To defend myself it’s usually Maine, and I’ve been to Canada, but Panama is not on my radar. Having said that I’ve decided that I should adventure somewhere more foreign this year. I’m open to suggestions. I like to run, walk, drink and eat, no surfing or skiing, Lacrosse would be OK.

    • I have to get up to New England soon. Maybe this autumn. It can be an adventure.
You should stretch it some if you want to though.

  12. You say on the about page ” I am a candidate for post grad work in a variety of disciplines — of which surfing is one”. I think you should use that qualification as often as time allows. So good for you.

I’m late on my internet rounds lately, but I gather you are still out of the country. I hope you are getting some surf time in. Everyone will still be mad and the post will still be paying shitty journalists when you return. Unless pigs fly that is.

  13. I don’t see how you can surf. Like physically, how do you stay up? It’s all I can do to ice skate, at a below average level.

I’ve been without internet for a couple of days. It was as difficult as you might have imagined. I’m currently accepting condolences.

Hope you had a wonderful trip.
