Doing Despots for Dollars and Poopy Doop

I had a post titled to the shores of Tripoli but I panned it. I’m not feeling the Libya vibe today except to mention that I think it silly that according to Rolling Stone ,  since Nelly Furtado Donated A Million Of Qaddafi Money To Charity“members of the music industry are calling on Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Usher and 50 Cent to donate to charity the money they had made by performing private gigs for family members of Libyan dictator Muammar el-Qaddafi.”

It’s so beyond the point. Each and every one of those performers had to have known that “the family” was mad crazy exploitive and tyrannic. You can’t tell me they were receiving the millions for performing and didn’t know this. Even if they did give up the money now the symbolism alone is not enough, it would not exonerate them from their past greed. Not knowing is never an excuse. They should be embarrassed ashamed. Entertainers should know their elites better before pandering to them.

More importantly, I’ve discovered that Dr. Oz give me the creeps. I don’t know if it’s his obsession with Psyllium Husk, or footstools, or his total commitment to make us poop better that bothers me more.

  1. A footstool to improve my stool? Love the idea and maybe a stand for my book!

  2. My grandmother loves Doctor Oz. He is obsessed with the poop, but so is she.

Doing the glitter thing for the Middle Eastern dictators, this pop culture of ours excuses a lot by ignoring it.

  3. The fake social consciousness of these celebrities is what kills me. You don’t dance with dictators.’

I don’t see that Usher was big on supporting Human Rights charities but Beyonce supposedly has a few humans right type to her credit.

It goes to show how pretentious it all is.

  4. I have never heard you talk about poop–in all these years. I can’t stand Dr. Oz but I can’t stand any self-help TV icon
Everybody wants to be Bono :)

    • “I have never heard you talk about poop–in all these years.”

Sad I know, but that’s how busy I’ve been with work.

  5. I thought it was just me not liking Dr. Oz.

Those Libyans pay well though don’t they? A few million for a couple of minutes?

Guess you can’t believe everything you hear, but it does make you think about what people will do for money.

I don’t mind the poo reference in this context, lucky for us it’s the first time. At 17 you were too busy posting about Iraq and Darfur to fall to poo posts. ;)

  6. Nelly once turned down a half a million dollars to pose clothed for Playboy according to wikipedia anyway…..they don’t know what they don’t know. I blame her for the ignorance but give her credit. I can’t say I feel the same about the rest of them though. Nelly I like, that’s the difference.

I think I had a little plastic red footstool in my childhood bathroom. I thought it was there so I could get into the medicine cabinet, at least that is what I used it for when I was 5.

  7. If you’re under 35 years old there is no way you could understand why Dr Oz is concerned with being well regulated.
I don’t want to get into details since you seem so easily creeped out by it, but I feel like crap if I don’t. I’ve got it down to a science right down to sanitary means. Warm soapy baby wipes, the works!
My hope is that when the morticians prep me, they’ll say:” Damm he’s got a clean butthole.”

  8. I’m so tired of celebrities and I don’t even own a TV.

I don’t understand the people who are obsessed with celebrities, and I definitely don’t fault them for taking money anymore than I fault the companies that have, you know, sold that family ANYTHING, ever, in their life. Anyone that had a transaction with that family is a culprit, not just celebrities.

I just don’t understand why those entertainers are more responsible, when car companies, or other services are just as bad. Why pin it on celebrities? They’re generally uneducated. What’s the difference?

    • I don’t watch telly either, unless it’s recorded but I think the Rolling Stone article that provoked this post is about musicians calling out their own. The culpability may be widespread, but to the point, I think corporations will have to call out each other, just as governments will have to call out other governments. We don’t see that happening.

This country started selling them arms again four or five years ago. Talk about culpability.

  9. Pop culture icons live an unrealistic life that we hover around and condone by purchasing their music. It is the culture. But I do hold them responsible for their ignorance.

Usher is quite the international entertainer hobnobbing with the various tyrants over the years.

It’s be nice if in the late afternoon the would have a couple of good history and world geography and culture show on for the children and for adults – instead of some of these elf help pr gossip shows.

    • I never watched afternoon telly growing up. Not sure why. We were outside a lot. Tearing up our knees and such.

But yea, it would be nice to have something on that maybe a stay at home mother could learn something from.

  10. I don’t know about a foot stool. And I’m scared to Google that other thing you mentioned. Which is a first for me. I don’t think I’ve ever been scared to Google anything before.

  11. There is an irony in having gaddafi’s money donated via proxy (the entertainers) for the benefit of the Libyan people.

I think everyone who took the money ought to return it from whence it came: the Libyan people. It’s a ton of bread, man.
