Haven’t done one of these in awhile, so it’s Have Read (Seen, Listened To, Will Miss), Friday.
I have read something I have been meaning to read for some time, Outcasts United. It is the story of the The Fugees (not the hip hop group), a soccer team of ethically diverse refugee boys whose families were all resettled to Clarkston, Georgia. An interesting look into what happens to people when they are resettled far from their home, as well as a look at how these resettlements affect the community. I recommend the book to like minds. You know who you are.
After sitting around contemplating literary triangles I turn on the telly. Wanting to avoid cynicism, or provocation there-of, I watch the weather. The newscasters are still telling stories, the miraculous and the horrible, of people caught in the storm a couple of days ago. Consequently I have seen more news about people stuck for hours in their cars during the past snowstorm than I ever care to see again.
It’s stunning how in this day and age, with all the fine weather calculating, forecasting and forewarning, so many people in or around the Washington Beltway got stuck in their cars for upwards of 8 hours in yesterday’s storm.
One women, stuck in her car on the GW Parkway for 4 hours, was able to eventually get aid and a bathroom with the help of another women who came to her rescue, but only to eventually end up stuck for 9 more hours in the vehicle of the rescuer?
How does this happen?
I have listened to the Decemberists’, The King Is Dead, and liked it enough to buy the mp3 version. I recommend it. Also hooked on James Blunt’s So Far Gone. Despite the naysayers playing in my head I love him. Some might say it is because he looks like many my past boyfriends, not because of his music. They’d be wrong.
I will miss seeing Rafael Nadal in the final of the Australian Open, but at least he is the newest face for Emporio Armani.
Come to mama.
What have you read, seen listened too, and what will you miss this week?
Peace

These friday themes are fun though I’m always at loss, especially after looking at a photo of Rafa in his underwear.
I’ve finally read The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and can’t wait to continue the series. Have seen a great movie in True Grit, have listened to ” Rhythm of Love “- Plain White T’s, like it and will miss…. ….
gotta go with RAFA after that photo
For some reason True Grit hasn’t enticed me yet.
If you saw the John Wayne version, then you’ve seen the better version.
That was a mad apocalypse of snow and traffic, if it had been a terrorist attack a lot of people would have been dead.
I work in the Baltimore, was able to get home before it began. It did start fast and come down heavy though.
->>>I’ve read “Slaughterhouse-Five”, for the first time, and –>>>listened to something a friend sent me by “The Naked and the Famous” AND though I remember the band name I don’t remember the song, it was not that great.
->>>>I’ve seen a stink bug, still alive in the middle of winter.
–>>>>I will miss Lacrosse season when it’s over, it is just beginning.

I’m still seeing those bugs too. I thought they were supposed to die with the cold and we had a very cold December.
yea for Slaughterhouse Five.
Late in the fall, stink bugs will find gaps in the exterior of homes and then work their way towards the warm interior. That’s why you see them in your kitchen sink in the dead of winter. Just toss them outside and Mother Nature will take care of them.

Never thought of you as interested in undieporn.
Where’s Courtney Love?

I love me some rafa
read, seen listened too, and what will you miss
Just finished the 2nd book in Moberg’s The Emigrants trilogy — fabulous and moving. Saw Arn – The Knight Templar — more good Swedish fare. Enjoyed listening to NPR’s Science Friday (as I do every week). Will miss my daughter Kelly, who is moving to San Fransisco in a few weeks :( We did manage to have a fun date tonight at the Jazz game.
Love the avatar Rich.
Always good reading suggestions, i actually think they have all those on Kindle though they don’t sell the hard book trilogy together any more.
Awe, well it’s nice you got to spend some time with her. Lucky for the internet.
I have the first book in hardcover, the 2nd and 3rd on my Kindle. Turns out there’s also a 4th (not a trilogy after all).
Yes, and now I have an excuse to visit S.F. again; a fun place to visit.
I’m going to have to read that book. I used to go to community meetings with a resettlement group in Clarkston and it was amazing. An old Serb smoking, three Somalis speaking, it was like the twelve days of Christmas with languages and cultures.
The joke was that there were 28 languages spoken in Clarkston and one in Georgia.
That must have been fascinating. The book is good.
I’ve read Equal Rites, which is about the first lady-wizard in the history of the Discworld.
I have seen Despicable Me, finally, and while I liked it I feel they could have done a lot more with it.
I have listened to Sonic Jihad by Snake River Conspiracy, a band that’s managed to evade my notice for the past 11 years, possibly because they sound so much like NIN.
And while I’m currently enjoying it, I’m sure that one day I’ll miss the era when election seasons began more than a couple of months after the first session of a new Congress.

Equal Rites is definitely not on my radar, I’ve not heard Snake River Conspiracy, I’ll have to look them up tomorrow. Now I have to nap so I can get up to watch the men’s tennis final at 3am.
I think the whole election coverage seemingly years in advance is agonizing,
I’m mostly enjoying it because it feels like this one is going to turn out better. I live in hope.
I saw The Kids are Alright last night which I sadly realized was the first grown up movie I’ve seen in sometime. I read Unbroken which I liked because really I know a tenth as much about the war in the Pacific as I do about the war in Europe–and tying it into an Olympic runner who wasn’t an official prisoner of war’s story was fascinating. I almost accidentally ordered the Tiger Mom book but fortunately came to my senses. I will get Outcasts United as that is my kind of book
I strangely missed Keith Olbermann on Tuesday when I know had he been on TV I would have been annoyed at him for something
Tiger Mom is taking a lot of heat that is for sure.
Unbroken sounds , i just looked and they have it on Kindle so I may purchase it. I have a couple months where my work is steady but not excruciating and I will be able to do a lot of reading.
I’m speechless, but in a good way. ;)
Have read “The Successful Match: 200 Rules to Succeed in the Residency Match” and “250 Biggest Mistakes 3rd Year Medical Students Make And How to Avoid Them”. I have listened to some old Madonna compilations a patient gave me, and I’ve seen True Grit, a group of us went on our night off this week. I will miss my brother, I never see him but he is moving to Germany for two years so he will be out of the country and that makes me miss him.

You ‘ve had a full week that is for sure.
Finally read the girl with the dragon tattoo, and I have seen and listened to a performance by the glee chorus at our school. I will miss this group of 5th graders when they are gone.
That photo of Nadal makes me blush.

I have the first one sitting around somewhere but have’t read it.
That photo makes me hungry. ;)
Outcasts United looks interesting. I’m reading Cool Hunting where I’ve found your next Birthday gift.
They were a little discombobulated by this last snowstorm. I blame the SOTU.
Rafa looks not half bad, lol.

I love those things I ma have to post about them. A colorful collection I think. The custom made ones are pretty nice.
No, Rafa looks whole good.
Yes, yes…just fill a post with views of struggling people resettling from an insightful book, slip in that your ex’s looked like meat pole James Blunt, and end with an image of a guy in his underwear then expect no return jab???
Nope! I will not stoop.
I haven’t read any books in awhile. I’m usually reading articles, and everything I can to keep up with discoveries in science, and world events.
As for music, I’m still doing my insoc kick. Retro healing, it is.
And no, don’t dig too deep into the meat pole comment. Only for humor.

heh,
You know Fridays are for relaxation.
heh heh I think you’re on to something
I’m reading “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Buying Foreclosures” and “Brewing Up a Business: Adventures in Entrepreneurship from the Founder of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery”, have seen some crazy drunk ass bitches, but I’m on break and have seen an awesome custom built troller just rolled on by the bar.
Will miss this beach when I move to the next beach.

Must suck to be Rafa.
Read Aljazeera first time: far more objective perspective than I would have thought. Saw the awesome power of, and the true change that the internet has brought to our world as it’s influence fuels the common people of Egypt’s drive for a voice in their lives. Heard the US Government bow to that power as 150 billion dollar’s of aid and 30 years of political support get tossed out the window and the President throws his/your support behind the people of Egypt not the regime. Will miss nothing this week; it was a week of beginnings.
Love the Friday edition!!

I read Aljazeera, it’s part of my news feeds I like it for the most part. Yes, that is the partiality that comes from longstanding political relationship in which mutual back-scratching is a must.
The people do not enter into the main equation, they are only part of the supporting calculations.
Augh, I was like the 4th commenter on this, and apparently it ate my comment, and now no one will ever believe me…
I have read Into Thin Air.
Love the Decemberists. I have seen them on some late night show, performing “Down By The Water.” Was trying to decide upon some of their songs to download the other night.
And I’m more of a Federer guy myself, for different reasons altogether.

I don’t keep tabs, one does not get more points for being first, although that is a good idea. I mean I don’t love you any less for being late to the dance, again.
So was the book good enough to recommend?
If you read Krakauer, then you need to read the updated The Climb by Boukreev and DeWalt; contains “a response” to Krakauer.

Yes :)

I a see how the weather works for those who want to “avoid cynicism, or provocation there-of, ” beautiful.
I read the “Atlas Of Remote Islands”, a book my wife gifted me for Christmas, beautiful book I recommend it.
I taking a listen to that Decemberist mp3 album. I couldn’t resist for 8 bucks. I used to listen to them considerably more but they disappeared off my radar.
“Atlas Of Remote Islands”looks like a great but expensive to own book.
Have read Martha Finch’s Dissenting Bodies. Never knew Myles Standish was a barbarian or that Plimoth Plantation once had the head of an local Wituwamat native posted on the sharp end of a pike.
Have seen 14 fat guys trying to chomp down bologna sammiches. Disgusting. Especially the guy who could not keep his share down.
Have listened to Tanya Donelly’s sweet voice on some Belly CD’s. Take your hat off girl when you talk to meeee. …
Will miss seeing the new version of True Grit; see my comment, above.
iamsauerkraut recently posted..Gus Sayer’s refusal to address continuing bullying is troublesome
I don’t want to see it but I don’t like John Wayne either. I haven’t seem much of him though.
“Have seen 14 fat guys trying to chomp down bologna sammiches. Disgusting. Especially the guy who could not keep his share down.” No one should have to put up with that.
“Dissenting Bodies” looks interesting, have to hit up the library for that.
James Blunt, while sharing a common military background and love of classical piano, isn’t that good looking of a man. Fortunately, he’s got the male sultry voice that makes me weak at the knees. I actually prefer his song, “Carry me Home”, but all of his new stuff still has the same soothing effect on me.

I have a penchant for his looks, he looks like my high school love and my stalker love. lol
I used to listen to him a lot but lately not so much.
having been one of those james blunt look a likes (though in 11th grade(, and much taller, I think i should take offense. ;)
I’m just getting settled and let me tell you I like the weather here and have read seen or listened to nothing but pleaser stay tuned.
