Going Gentle On Their Minds

Texas, a Sisyphean task.

Did humans live at the same time as the dinosaurs? Three in ten Texas voters agree with that statement; 41 percent disagree, and 30 percent don’t know

Between you and me, I’m pretty sure the Texans surveyed were confusing history with film.

I have no excuse for noting another non-substantive piece of trivia on the blog. I’ll forbear such action in the future. Unless, of course, I want to hear this incredibly wordy John Hartford song again — and find myself in need of post to place a title.

  1. This might be part of the reason the dollar continues to fall. Good thing they weren’t asked really hard survey questions….lol

  2. Pretty good case against evolution, I have to say.

  3. I woke up thinking “one fifth of all Americans think Obama’s Muslim and his loyalty is to Africa.” Same people I’d betcha.

  4. Although I would give credence to the possibility of humans having lived on Earth up to 300,000 years earlier than most estimates I doubt humans walked with dinosaurs.

This is obviously a lack of responsible education.

What I still find troubling is how we as humans never really stop to question our real purpose on Earth. Between buying the latest tech gadget, or chemically engineered snack food, I ponder, wtf, are we here for? Then I enjoy a reese’s peanut butter cup, and lose all train of thought.

  5. Cooper, the Bible tells us that humans and dinosaurs lived happily together.

And just think, the people who believe this to be true, the people who want school children taught such things, who want science class to be about how the earth is only 6,000 years old, were voted as the majority party in the U.S. house of representatives. Wheeee!!

  6. I’m hoping they meant the film too.
These things can get confusing you know.

That is a wordy song. Good one though.

    • You can bet I have no idea. Texas is the one place on earth I know nothing about (except the DFW airport), and I hope to keep it that way.

  8. Non-substantive? I think it’s more or less emblematic of everything of substance that’s going wrong right now. If dinosaurs and humans occupy the same part of the timeline in that many minds, I think we need to get to work coming up with a method of fighting climate change that doesn’t require that we convince everyone that climate change is happening

    • It doesn’t serve to change anything or give us any really new information, though and I do bet there are other locations in the country where one might actually see more horrifying results.

I have no hope on climate change, we won’t have to burn in hell we will be hell, I think the “no progeny” solution will work best for me.

  9. I’m going to go out on a limb here and risk disembowelment by saying there are segments of the east cost where facts are unacknowledged as well.

    My favorite verse
“It’s not clingin’ to the rocks and ivy
Planted on their columns now that bind me
Or something that somebody said because
They thought we fit together walkin’
It’s just knowing that the world
Will not be cursing or forgiving
When I walk along some railroad track and find
That you’re movin’ on the back roads
By the rivers of my memory
And for hours you’re just gentle on my mind”

    • The number of words is the song has always amazed me,,, reminding me of …well almost you. Someone who talks way to fast/much, but it all comes out splendidly anyhow.

  11. You know, everything’s bigger in Texas, including, apparently, collective ignorance.

  12. I recently purchased a Euro game called Dominant Species in which each player plays one of six types of animals–mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, arachnids, and insects–in the face of an approaching Ice Age millions of years ago. We’ve been having trying to think of a particular species of animal trying to survive in a particular type of landscape (i.e. what kind of reptile could live in the deep ocean? what kind of bird could live in a frozen tundra?).

But not once has a mammal player ever said, “Oh, this has to be a human,” when confronted with a reptile player rattling off that one of his pieces is a particular species of dinosaur.

  13. I always hope, in cases like this, that people are pulling the leg of those doing the poll or survey.

I just don’t think riding a brontosaurus would have been doable.

That song is stacked full of words, and like has already been said it’s like one of those little kids who shoves too many words into a sentence all at once really fast. The only difference is it sounds good.
