In Praise of Falling on the Sword

In an email, titled Shoot me Now My Party Has Been Taken Over by Loons, one of my more conservative friends sent me a link to the the oh my fucking gawd of the day. Christine d’Arc, Why Her Election is So Important, a piece de resistance absurdité at Red State. The post is introduced by a badly photo-shopped Christine O’Donnell — as a Joan of Arc. You can stop at the picture and be confident you know what the discombobulated post is about. Don’t stop. It’s too dumbfounding to miss.

Either way, I get anxious when I’m on a plane, sitting next to a middle aged white women who happens to be dressed in 15th century amour or a martyr suit. What about you?

  1. My dear friend, people have been murdered for less, and that would make you a……………………martyr. ;)

    Conservative friend? Do tell.

  2. As disquieting as this post is, the comments are what are really scary.

What if…. the Tea Party actually does get a fair number seats and political will being what it is, they decide that the Republican party is also too far left and that they actually were voted in to govern as opposed to being a protest vote against a failing economy, job losses and the decline in home prices?

That could be a serious disaster…

    • The comments at those sights are always a little disconcerting, that is for sure. It seems there is some kind of pre-planned ebb and flow to politics and it stymies and progress.

  3. It’s already a serious disaster for a lot of people.

I don’t think it will be as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Liberals have to vote, despite being discouraged, and embarrassed conservatives need to get out there too.

    • At least i Maryland it looks like the governor won’t be ERLICH again, though it’shard to tell. I did a get out the vote thing sat for 3 hours there were a lot of people.

  4. These days we have more martyrs than firewood, unfortunately.

    Clever, your Juan Williams joke.

  6. O’Donnell is pretty miraculously out of touch with reality, which may qualify her for sainthood in some faiths. We’re definitely living in scary times, and what gets me in addition to the credibility given to such loony candidates on the right is how the more sane of us are forced to back what are in most cases exceptionally mediocre Democrats (and I’m being generous there) because of it. I can’t even watch broadcast TV anymore because of the insipid ads. I think NPR should have just claimed to fire Williams because of incompetence… his opinions have always been neither insightful nor interesting.

    • In her defense a lot of the men and women of congress have no idea the reality of most citizens, though most have their feet planted in the real world, unlike Ms O’Donnell.

Congress is just a nice cushy job that they all want to keep as along as they can.

  7. unbe-effing-lievable.

I’m almost of a mind to follow the conservative tactic in the opposite direction: let’s hope they win, screw up like they did before, and send the pendulum back in the opposite direction.

I’ve lost faith that our country will ever overcome demagoguery of one form or another and learn to think.

  8. Red State moderates comments and doesn’t let any reasonable debate get past. i’m not surprised at the absurdity of that post. or the one it referenced/linked to. It is an OMFG of the day.

Love the photos. The reference to Williams and the Muhammad jab are priceless.

These are trying times we must have at them.

    • “These are trying times we must have at them.”

It is not as easy as it sound,,,yes?

One think I do notice about those radically ill-informed ultra crazy conservative sites is that they do moderate comments and you rarely see them allowing real debate. I don’t find that at most liberal sites, some yes most generally not.

  9. I worked with a teacher, when I first started teaching right out of school, who loved that site – Red State. Scary. I wonder sometimes if any of these people took history, government, or even English. I’m sure they didn’t get as far as taking logic.

  10. The comments are almost always the scary part
I have read blogs that explain in great detail why she’s right about The First Amendment. They don’t look at intent–the previous drafts which were much clearer but a letter Jefferson later wrote in 1802; and how the courts and con law lawyers have interpreted The First. Much more fun to laugh at liberals. Funny but we don’t laugh at them–too scary
.If she wins I will call the IRS and demand my past decade’s taxes back. I will stop paying bills and use her as my excuse
Uh I have a martyr suit and fit the demographic you mentioned. Fear me!

  11. Oh I love whoever sent you that email. great title!!!!!!!

There are people here is Delaware who love that women, not enough to elect her.

  13. And I thought the women on the cover of that women in white book jacket was scary.

If it makes you feel any better I don’t think Ehrlich is going to beat O’Malley.

  14. That woman makes me unspeakably angry. That anything she says is taken seriously or given any merit at all upsets me… and I’m halfway across the world from you.

I can’t imagine how it must be for you.

If it’s any consolation (and it will be cold); the conservative bent seems to be a global issue at the moment- the Netherlands and Belgium being case in point, leave alone the others. :(

    • What bothers most of us is that there is no end to the media coverage of the ridiculous and instead of acting like journalists and finding and reporting the truth they pander to the entertaining idiots like her.

Yo are right risha, a chilly consolidation for sure.

  15. So much of what you write gets past the average person.

I’m glad I’m not the average person.

  16. I am a proud member of the group uncommonly known as “Banished from the Red State Site.”

There is some thought that the regular gop wants teabaggers to be elected so that their true base will be scared enough to vote in volumes, for republicans, next time.

Phone banking sucks. Must prefer going door-to-door.

    • They are the extreme though, but it is best to stay away from a site that doesn’t allow people to counter their post with factual information.

  17. I’m conflicted. On the one hand, Christene O Donnell is a never-ending font of hilarity. On the other, she’s not actually all that much more crazy than the other candidates showing up on ballots nationwide, but she’s the only one getting attention for it. It’s frustrating, to say the least.

  19. Christine O’Donnell sums up this year’s elections perfectly. She is a perennial Repub candidate that has never come close to winning a primary; yet this year she is the tea bagging darling of the GOP.

Good for them. Glad they have her. Glad she embodies their movement from soul to body. Any other year a candidate like O’Donnell would have have been impossible. Because this year is ruled by crazies, led by the most watched media organization in America, all of us have to suffer through the most distant reach of basic sanity this nation has seen in a long, long time.

I’ll agree all day long Dems are far from perfect. And there’s much more work to be done. Why in the world DADT hasn’t been repealed is a colossal defeat to equality and will ring hollow this November. But allowing the GOP any more power than they currently have is the opposite of teaching them a lesson. It’s putting everything progressives have worked for over the last 30 years on hold, maybe forever.

People who support a forward looking 21st century America and don’t vote this year are going to be quite surprised when cavemen are trying to force them to Bible study on Wednesday nights.

      • I’ve been doing et out the vote for two weeks when I can, but I’m mostly trying to keep the former gov from getting back into Annapolis. I think the tide is turning slightly, but as for O’Donnell – it’s such a sham and those with any sense are quite aware of that, many are just ready to give up for a few years and go to sleep.

What are comments for if not to rant?

OH, yea right to say “good post” and move on. lol
