Every time that I look in the mirror
All these lines on my face getting clearer
The past is gone
It went by, like dusk to dawn
Isn’t that the way
Everybody’s got their dues in life to pay
Steven Tyler is paying his dues the hard way. He will be acting as a judge on American Idol.
I like Steven Tyler. He’s a bit of a genius in that he’s “resurged” many times (professionally and from the crevices of drug addiction), while never really disappearing. He wrote one of the greatest songs of all time, Dream On, at the age of 17, performing it with Aerosmith, firstly at school dances — one being in a gymnasium of the high school my mother attended in Western Massachusetts in 1970 or 71. He is 62 years old. Derision is not justified when speaking of someone who retained his success, stamina, and lips, for 40 years.
Not worthy enough to ask why, I can only hope his compensation is phenomenal.
As painful as it is to admit, inspiration here is arbitrary. The one time prolific, almost prodigal, thoughts for Wonderland or Not are now meager. Ideas and energy sucked into a graduate seminars, or economic commission meeting minutes.
This too will pass.
Peace

speaking of idol, Kelly Clarkson actually does a great cover of “Cryin”.
He’s been around awhile for sure. I didn’t realize how long.
Ideas will come when you’re not using them elsewhere.

yea she does.
Burberry breaks my heart.. I love them so.
One suspects you will be around a while too, dear prodigal. A chapter concludes, another begins; keeps life interesting, that’s for sure.
I often think I’ve already been around far too long. ;)
A blog is probably where the second rank of our thoughts ought to go anyway. I agree with you about Dream On and Tyler, by the way. When I was a kid, the Isley Brothers and Aerosmith were kind of it.

I’m savoring this rare moment (in which you agree with me), with a fine Costa Rican coffee.
That is an aerosmith song? Why didn’t I know that?
Why do most, not all, of our current day musicians seem to lack not only talent but that staying power thing?
You got to do what you got to do.

I’m still in love with Honkin’ on Bobo.
The person with the biggest personality is going to shape the way that show progresses in the absence of Simon. Stephen Tyler has my permission to class that place up all he wants.
Honkin’ on Bobo – I was thinking of purchasing it on mp3 just last week. I has a copy of this sophomore year of college but as with a lot of my CD’S it disappeared before being burned.
The more you say legend the less it means. I won’t say it. He can do whatever he wants, he’s earned his right to commercialize because he does it do well and ….Dream On. yea.

we are both reading a lot of robert reich lately I think..

Perfectly stated.
Its hard to find an early early performance of “Dream On” in video.
He passed those gorgeous lips on to his children too, lucky them.
Arbitrary inspiration is better than no inspiration….drat that preoccupation with the real life.

“Arbitrary inspiration is better than no inspiration”
That’s what I figure…
Yeah there isn’t much out there, I didn’t look that long but long enough to know that the early seventies film of them is pretty rare.
There are a few early performances where the band and Tyler are well stoned out of their minds, but the video isn’t clear.
Great live version of Dream On here it from about 8 years ago in Tokyo. It is one of the best songs off all time.
What, at age 62 he’s not supposed to take a soft gig like Idol and be able to sit down and rest for a few months?
Arbitrary is alright. I can deal with arbitrary, as long as it doesn’t suck.

hey hey, that was a good performance thanks Jacob.
My energy is left in the corridors of a teaching hospital, the call rooms of the ER, and there is never anything left so I know how you feel.
I watch American Idol on my patients small hospital room televisions, while doing procedures, or when making rounds…they are always watching American Idol.
i’m not at all unhappy Tyler will be there.
Buck up gills, it won’t be much longer. I am proud of your success, no one needs a blog everyone needs a decent, honest, and ethical physician.
I’ve never disliked Aerosmith, or Steven Tyler. Not even when he sung about his favorite color – ‘pink’, or that really irritating song Janie’s Got A Gun. Actually I like certain parts of that song.
He has surprised me at how well he has survived all these years living the party rockstar – sex, drugs and rock & roll lifestyle.
My theory on his stability is that he has the metabolism of a 17 year old boy. He is awesome though.
Friday Stephen Colbert did a 5 minute bit in Congress that was funny mostly because half of congress didn’t know how to react with cameras on them, which was completely unprecedented, and hysterical. Why no blog on this?

“Why no blog on this?”
I love Colbert, but
I’m disgusted with a Congress (government in general), that is so self satisfied as to make them ineffectual. They are becoming so inept that a comedian (though a civic minded and politically active one), is allowed to go before them to make a few points by performing — entertaining some and totally confounding the rest — wasting precious minutes of legislation time. The people who needed to understand his point didn’t, and that was a forgone conclusion, so it was a sad waste of time. IMO
Time better spent on making bills that can actually pass and be effective in making the lives of the desperate people in this country at least somewhat better, making our air cleaner, making our healthcare more affordable, and are banks less corrupt.
I deal with policy all day in school and work. The blog is for fun, and to articulate thoughts on that whole situation properly would take a short novel.
I respect your opinion, and of course I agree time shouldn’t be wasted. I honestly feel the absurdity of the 5 minutes and congress’s inability to function progress is sort of a shameful moot point. They can’t agree to make changes for the people. The shift in power from rep to dem will last only so long before its lack of progressive results dismantles its dependability completely.
Changes needed to have been made not today, not tomorrow, but decades ago. Hope, and more broken promises aren’t going to fix this.

A comment that could have been a post. Love it. I agree with you if it means anything.
Love Tyler, Love Dream On, don’t like American Idol but maybe now I will ( doubt it)….hate is a word that is no longer in my vocabulary.

In the time I finished the post and scanned through the comments I tried to remember whether it was Mia or Liv Tyler who who thought she was Todd Rundgren’s daughter but found out her father was Steve Tyler–Liv, it was. Just a meaningless trivial factoid.
I find it interesting that somebody asked about Colbert in the same thread about American Idol because our country watches truly stupid reality shows and lets comedians testify on matters that people who worked in the fields for years should have
I love your posts whenever you post on whatever you feel like writing about. It’s good to know there are original thinkers who still blog just because and not to prove points
I don’t watch idol barely, watch television but Tyler can do about anything. Dream On is a classic, who wouldn’t want to have written it, it is pure poetry.
You too a classic.
Arbitrary is fine as someone else already commented.
