The Spoken Word

In 2007, wow three years ago, I wrote two poems for national poetry month and posted them in a blog post titled National Poetry Month — Write a Poem, Read a Poem.

Here is the favorite.

The Spoken Word

the written word
is many things
it makes me mad
invokes feeling

to a certain degree

the written word
can make me think
but it won’t
get me out of sync

like my old boyfriends

there are some things
it can not do
like kiss my lips
and it can’t unscrew

the wine I drink

the spoken word
is so much more
it gives me life
I can’t ignore

the human factor

seems funny now
as I get older
I thought I’d be brave
I’ve only gotten bolder

I don’t want to be alone

with the spoken word
there must be flesh
a human being
that could enmesh

me in their life

this all takes time
so writing was,
as reading is,
a pleasant pause

it let me breath

I’m breathing fine
maybe too well
I think maybe
it’s time to quell

My fear of life (my fear of love)

I don’t want
my soul to die
looking at
my purple sky

I’m so tired of purple

the purple sky
you say is blue
It might be time
to find out why

Your sky is blue
