Easter and Velveteen Rabbits

When considering which glorious day to sacrifice to work, I waxed and waned until Saturday was no longer an option. This made it impossible to commit to a full day of celebration at either of my two closet relatives. I tried to make the best of it by inviting a few friends for dinner.

I don’t celebrate Easter theoretically. Technically, I participate in the celebration of others. I’m a social being. I care little about what others believe, as long as they are not condensing their beliefs into policy that affect me. I also believe a good holiday should never go to waste, whether I actually celebrate it, or not. Consequently, I invited the best non proselytizing cook I know to cook for me, the best Martini maker (shaker) and Queen of Cosmos and Bloody Mary’s to tend bar, and a Buddhist from Philadelphia, to celebrate the day with me.

I woke up outrageously late, not too long ago (please don’t think less of me for that), others are manning my kitchen, so I must go. I wanted to say happy day to everyone. Happy whatever it is you have been, or are going to, celebrate.

I am Alice, and as you might have guessed I like to celebrate with rabbits. In case you didn’t receive or gift out a real rabbit this weekend I recommend, The Velveteen Rabbit, one of the best short children’s pieces ever written.

“‘Real isn’t how you are made,’ said the Skin Horse. ‘It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.’

If you haven’t read it to your child, do so. If you haven’t read it to yourself, let Meryl Streep do it below. Meryl Streep/George Winston (music), is the book and tape version I was given as a child. It’s rather spectacular.

by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.’”

  1. Happy heathen day, Cooper!
.-= Doug´s last blog ..The Reformation of Wolfshausen =-.

  2. I wish I could be one of those guests, but our time will come again coop. I haven’t celebrated with m family in eons,. med school takes care of that.

I love that story. I used to think everyone our age had been given that Meryl Streep version the book and the audio recording – but many people have never heard or read that story. Good to pass it on.

Enjoy the day. I’m on rotation – obstetrics and gynecology and am on this evening…speaking of rabbits. ;)

That sleep late thing…if only. I’d give anything.

  3. I love rabbits in theory. Artwork, stuffed animals, reading about them, and even looking at them from afar. But I’m a little terrified of them in person. Scary, scary sharp tooths. :(

The Velveteen Rabbit is a lovely book, though. I don’t know where my copy is, but maybe tomorrow I’ll hit the library and borrow it, it’s been ages since I read it.

    • It’s always a fun go through. I ‘ve never had a rabbit either, not much interested in them in reality, as cooper.

  4. Love that first line, it’s a nicely written line that anyone and everyone can relate to. Simplicity.

That voice could certainly calm a child down.

We came down to the beach his weekend. G came over and we colored Easter eggs last night. I am not joking.

I ready to pass out of jelly bean overload.

    Happy day cooper.

  5. Happy weekend then. Good choice on book and rabbits.

I’ve read that comment policy a few times and become more intimidated daily by it daily so bear with me.;)

I understand wasting away a beautiful day until there is no redemption, if the weather is nice I do it way too often.

  6. Happy Alice Day! I think that’s a nice name for a celebration by Cooper
I slept until 11:30 this morning and found the day went way too quickly
So now I’m at the do I sleep–because I love sleep–or stay awake–stage because I love being awake and actually doing things. And wasting away a beautiful day lying in the yard, reading counts. Though I haven’t yet this year

    • I’m always certain there is a nice day somewhere in my future, but never quite certain I will again have a good nights sleep.

I always opt for sleep because i do it do rarely.

Nice day(s) to you too pia.

  7. There is nothing better than getting up late, drinking Martini’s, Cosmos, and Bloody Mary’s, and falling asleep to the sound of Meryl Steep reading the Velveteen Rabbit.

  8. I LOVE that book. Loved, love, whatever. I’m pretty sure I have it around here somewhere. Along with The Poky Little Puppy.

  9. Perfectly celebrated! And thanks for having Ms. Streep read for us… what a delight! ;)

  10. So who was the Martini shaker?

I had that book and loved it. I probably still have it somewhere at m parents home unless they gave it away.

I forgot it was Easter except when I stopped at Danes and we colored eggs.Yup, we colored eggs.

    • what you know every martini shaker in the world? A friend from the commission on women. I love coloring eggs but didn’t do it.

  11. I hope you weekend was good, our’s was busy.

We have that book on past recommendation from this blog.;)
It’s a “must have” as opposed to a “nice to have”.
