Early Morning Wow Links

With my concentration needed elsewhere I post some links. Suggestions I think you will enjoy. Something for everyone. I know you all pretty well by now.

The famous “Just Wow” link for the day is, Walter Reed Officials Asked: Was Hasan Psychotic?. They asked this some time ago, long enough ago to have prevented this. There is something very strange, very wrong, and completely messed up here. We live in a country where you can get kicked out of high school, or at least expelled for the term, for carrying Motrin or Tylenol, but they won’t kick you out of the military, or even do a proper investigation if you are possibly psychotic and antagonistic toward the country you are serving?

The highly regarded “I’m loving it” link goes to The Hiking Artist.

The dreaded “you should vote” link goes to The World Challenge 09 finalists. There are 12 chosen finalist all innovative and awesome in their own right. My four choices use sun, shit, refuse, and disaster for the greater good. My top picks are Fuel Cell Kenya, Solar Sisters India, The Love in Haiti Project which many of you have probably already heard plenty about, and Old School Thai. Go find your favorites.

The rare “I’m sad I no longer live in N.Y. because I can’t go to this” link belongs to 33rd Annual Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival .

The coveted link, “My favorite non fiction blogelle” (a short piece posted to a blog), for this week is Get a Wife from the travel series Nowhere Slow at the Bygone Bureau.

The final and usually ignored must read link, Over 2,200 veterans died in 2008 due to lack of health insurance.

A research team at Harvard Medical School ( yea, yea, probably socialist), estimates 2,266 U.S. military veterans under the age of 65 died last year because they lacked health insurance and thus had reduced access to care. That figure is more than 14 times the number of deaths (155) suffered by U.S. troops in Afghanistan in 2008, and more than twice as many as have died (911 as of Oct. 31) since the war began in 2001.

The researchers, who released their analysis today [Tuesday], pointedly say the health reform legislation pending in the House and Senate will not significantly affect this grim picture.

Peace

20 Thoughts on “Early Morning Wow Links

  1. The World challenge was fun. The Kenyan “fuel cell, though, well, it might be right but it doesn’t feel right.

  2. I can think of things I’d rather do in NY than an anthropology film fest. ;)

The world challenges were fun. I thought the Kenyan idea was interesting, strange but interesting. I have heard little of the Haiti project, as close as they are you think we’d hear more about it.

The best the us came up with is coffee ground mushrooms, oh well.

    • Actually that fungi thing isn’t a bad idea but I have heard of something similar and even seen something similar done – on a smaller scale though.

  3. I hear you on the whole Hasan thinG. They call it red tape????????

I love all the projects, it’s hard to vote for one. I wonder of the ones that were not chosen?

Nowhere Slow = nice. Thanks for the links despite all your busy-ness.
.-= kait´s last blog ..These Boots Are Made for Walking =-.

  4. The name “Solar Sisters” – I love it. Neat projects going on.

I don’t get, was surprised, that they missed the Hasan thing despite what appears to be adequate warning.

Your links are as good as you, I’m going to tackle the others shortly.

  5. Looks different here, what did you do?

I like the World Challenge, but wonder at the poop projects.

The whole miss on Hassan is perplexing and not something that gives me confidence in our military. on the other side of that it is a shame how our vets are treated.

As always you give good link

  6. Hey, everyone needs a wife! :) Fun read.

Solar sisters — I’ve always been attracted to confident, competent women; awesome work.

Old school Thai – everyone should live “somewhere else” for a while to fully appreciate other cultures and communities.

  7. The question is how on earth could they ignore those blatant warning signs?

Finally a vote I can get into.

Hiking Artist allows free downloads of his work and that’s cool

  8. Loved the links. I’ve been reading some blogs that are (the blogger) convinced Hassan was a covered up as big as 9/11 terrorist. He was sick. The signs were there and….
This is the rare NY’er who does wish she could go to the Margaret Mead festival at my very favorite museum. One reason I moved (very ancillary but still) was that the museum became too popular between “Night at the Museum” movie and first night where one could and did get accidentally drunk while waiting in line for tapas

  9. The Get a Wife was good. And it’s not bad advice either.
.-= Chris- The Fold´s last blog ..Under the Weather =-.

  10. Get a Wife was amazing. You provide some awesome links. Here the word “awesome” is used in every conversation. Have to relearn speaking like a New Yorker

  11. So which link was for me? I think I know.

I mean, I know. But do you? :)
