The theme for Old School Friday this week is songs that inspire.
I was lucky to have seen this musician/artist a couple of times when I lived in NY. What if God Were One of Us is probably her best known song, though she doesn’t tend to do much pop. Though I loved the guitar rift in that song, and find it inspiring in it’s own because it never was about God, but about people and our collective consciousness, the song below is more inspirational to me for the way it is performed here.
Enjoy.
Joan Osborne, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted, from the soundtrack for the Funk Brothers’ movie “Standing in the Shadows of Motown” .
A nice but unembeddable HD version is here.

Ah, you’re welcome.
Cooper I have so many influences I couldn’t begin to list them. Going all the way back it’s Janis for both her extraordinary voice, and her attitude. Though I would have liked her to have lived–gotten past all the drugs and alcohol. Can’t imagine what she would have added to the world

That would have been something to see.
I’ve never heard that version of the song before, but I love it. Powerful instead of sad… definitely needed that.
So glad to have found your site! Hope your weekend is fantastic!

I’m usually too pretty for good weekends, but I’ll try.
Oh man this is great! I remember this from the movie too, and it was such a nice rendition of the tune.
Great pic, and Happy OSF!

I’m glad the memories were pleasant Keith.
I thought it strange that you considered that song inspirational, I’ve always though it a sad song, after listening to it I understand.
Great performance.

It’s all about presentation and interpretation…I guess.
My inspiration’s always been books, shows, and music. In order, chief among these, anything by L.M. Montgomery, Avonlea, and Rilo Kiley.

Yes I have seen your inspirations, in all those forms, over the last many years now. ;)
This is good cooper. I’ve never heard Osborne perfom this.
My inspiration is the ocean.
gina chose a song and I posted it though so go check it out.

Excellent choice.
Pretty much anything by Loreena McKennitt inspires me (this one you may recognize if you’re not already familiar with her music).
That is pretty nice. I have not really heard of her, but will investigate. Thanks.
This was a good choice cooper.
Inspirational music comes and goes. Sarah

I liked that. I feel like I know her but I’m not sure from where. I’ll have to find out more in the morning. Thanks, Coop!

“I feel like I know her but I’m not sure from where.”
I’ve had that feeling often. It doesn’t always turn our well post investigation. ;)
Pavarotti’s “Nessun dorma” from the final act of Puccini’s Turandot.

Guns and Roses Paradise City is one on the other side of the road that does the same thing.
Oh god I love that, yes. I am a bit of a geek for some Puccini…..
Guns and Roses I can take or leave…leave usually.
Nice performance. I think of inspiration and I think the Eye of the Tiger.
