A Closet With A View, And Other Saturday Evening Sundries

October 24th, 2009 by cooper

Sundries for an early Saturday night.

In his article Rise of Nuclear Alarmism, John Mueller (Woody Hayes Chair of National Security Studies at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies), asks and answers “how we learned to start worrying and fear the bomb — and why we don’t have to”. A nice companion read to his recently released Atomic Obsession: Nuclear Alarmism from Hiroshima to Al-Qaeda.

Tristan tipped me off to this Archcomix presentation. A Graphic History of the Honduran Coup. The linked presentation is via alternet.

For my friends in the Dominican Republic (Say No To Sexist, Racist & Homophobic Dominican Constitution)

Less than a fortnight before my 5th blogging anniversary I sit here perusing technorati’s 2009 state of the blogesphere. I believe it is their 6th such event. This year it comes in 5 or 6 parts, plenty of statistics to browse through. In case you are even geekier than I am here is an archived post regarding the first state of the blogesphere, done in 2004 after two years worth of tracking.

Now for the state of the Coopersphere.

Should be Famous will end soon, it expires and unfortunately I have no time for it. Intentions were good, but as we know intent means little outside a court of law.

This blog remains of course, as does Hell on Earth.

I now have a Tumblr where I post Compulsions.

Speaking of my upcoming bloggaversary, I’m not sure whether having lasted 5 years is something I should be pleased with, and write about, or not. Are the expectations similar to those applied when speaking or writing of chronological age? By that I mean, if you are old, and have done nothing, is it best to not to congratulate yourself on your age? If so I suppose I shouldn’t mention my blogging anniversary, as unlike in my life, where I’ve accomplished a bit, I’ve achieved very little in blogging. This blogging, it’s my closet. A large closet with shelves, possibly even a window. A closet with a view it may be, but not a room, never a room.

Not totally inept I’ve managed to find some grand readers for my closet, and for that I applaud myself.

Congratulatory bloggaversary gifts will not be accepted, however, you may friend a gorilla in my honor, for $1. ;)

Peace

We will all be nuked, or we won’t, not much to do about it.

The graphic history of the Coup a nice way to look at it, because no one is looking at it. They should be.

It’s hard to blog. You do it well. you deserve a gorilla friending.

I gagged a little at the last compulsion loved the poo one.

You’ve done your closet proud cooper. I for the most part and must glad to see you still blog with you life moving on as it is.

Speaking of Compulsions, forgive Sedaka that one song will ya. ;)

I am fearful of nuclear attack only because their are madmen in the world. We may have more to fear at home or from GB than from Iran for all I know.

I’ve spend some time in past years in Honduras and if a comic makes people pay attention so much the better, it doesn’t seem to be much covered in the media in this country.

I think you’re a blogging pioneer and I’m ready to offer congratulations when you’re ready to accept them. I don’t have a Facebook account but I’m a little uncomfortable with the redistributionary affect of sending gorillas money. They already get the best trees and the hottest civil partners.

Intereesting FP piece, and the book sounds intriguing.

Blogging is hard work. I think.Love the last paragraph, it deserves it’s own gorilla.

There isn’t time for much of anything lately, that’s for sure.

  5. Glad you enjoyed the Graphic History link. Found it at the UK Guardian and I thought it was brilliant.

Five years of blogging here? It’s an accomplishment. You’re contributing something different to this world whether you realize it or not.

Love the Graphic History and have passed it on to many people.

I started at blog-spot, though this is the same blog I transferred it in 2006.

You’re an incredible blogger. I have issues about having reached five years – forced myself to announce it as it seemed the most minor of accomplishments – but yours is one of growth and splendor

I think staying power is important. ;)

Then again maybe it’s just something people do these days and to much of an accomplishment at all. I think it depends on how one looks at it.

If only time was not an issue.

The archcomix is great. I passed it on to my tia who is increasingly frustrated of the lack of attention paid to this mater. A brilliant piece of work for sure.

I know you are kidding but a gorilla gift is a great idea.

    I like the “compulsion” idea.

Last time I “friended” a gorilla, he threw poop at me.

Thanks for not warning on Sedaka… nothing I like better than to watch an old man shake his ass while talking trash about the non-y chromosomers.

Time to take a gander at archcomix… hope I don’t get goosed.

I don’t expect you’ll be gone soon. BTW I like the compulsion tumblr idea, it’s that the desire to comment is thwarted there being no commentary.

I am not sure we should forgive anyone that last video of Neil Sedaka.

The Poo Award winner was a great little film, you’re right, if the water is dirty the soap doesn’t matter.

I don’t know whether to be fearful of atomic weapons or not. Fear doesn’t accomplish much.

    Gorilla tracking. Love it.

Hey thanks for the a-bomb links. Atomic diplomacy is something I’ve always been very interested in. Not sure if you’ve ever read any of Gar Alperovitz, but some his writings are well worth the read.

Congrats on the five years. I think I’ve been reading you for four years so I feel like it’s an anniversary for me too.

The book is pretty good, something you’d probably like.

You know for most of us at least people my age blogging seems more like something that is just part of life as oppsed ot anything else.

Friendagorilla sounds much more promising than my last internet endeavor. Though now I’m wondering, how many blogging years equals one gorilla year?

Happy bloggiversary. (We can debate the spelling later.)
