A Complicated Good Riddance on Old School Friday

October 16th, 2009 by cooper

It’s Old School Friday and the theme this week is “song you detest but know all the words to”.

Certainly detest is rather harsh word for music, but Good Riddance comes to mind. This song played ad nauseam throughout high school, even though it was totally uncool to like Green Day because they had been commodified.

Time tiptoed on. Those who protested the most are now selling something, or wishing they were commodifiable, and no one actually gives a crap any longer because the internet has changed the artistic commodities game (somewhat). From the sound of this video there are quite a few people who know all the words to Time of Your Life. I no longer detest the flaw in my character that caused me to remember every word to this song, I relish the defect as a matter of fact, and I still want Billy Joe Armstrong to be my boyfriend.

Time of Your Life (Good Riddance), Green Day

The following a truly despicable song, as well as a perfect high school theme song. This played through the end of my junior year of high school throughout senior year, couldn’t get away from it (laugh out when you strike your pose, take off all your preppy clothes), I mean seriously. I admit, in a more sincere way this time, that I am humiliated to know every single word of it. Go ahead hate on me. I can take it, it’s not Complicated.

What song to you detest in some way or another, but know all the words too?

At first glance via my RSS reader, I thought you were referring to the band Good Riddance (who is awesome, BTW), so imagine my disappointment when I saw Green Day.

That being said, I have a knack for remembering weird things. One of them is song lyrics. I know the words to entire albums I don’t like.

I hate to admit it but I know all the words to “My Heart Will Go On”. Embararrsing I know.

“Karma Chameleon” and “Friends in low Places” are two. There are many. It’s hard to figure if it’s because they were played so much or if they are just bad. I know the song when I hear it because I wince.

I like to think I know the words to this song, below, because it’s so bad.

Or because I watch the wrong movies.

More likely, it’s because of some undiagnosed OCD compulsion.

That is damn scary for reasons other than the song though, it looks like a bunch of frat boys, always a disturbing scene.

This is very un-pc, but I really hate the lyrics to “If I had a hammer” and 9.9 Pete Seeger songs

Man, I’ve been thinking about this for two days. The best (or worst) I can come up with is “Everything I Do (I Do It For You” by Bryan Adams. I remember the girl I was dating at the time wanted that to be our song. And I bought the cassette single for her.

My backup would be something by Shania Twain.

And my safety is “Mickey” by Tony Basil.

I very rarely learn the words to songs I dislike. Then again, there are only a few songs I’ve heard that I dislike enough to comment on them.

My problem is is I listen to too many genres and types of music to really go so far as to hate on a song for being what it is.

They’re all of the gods’ creatures, after all. LOL
