It’s Your Life, It’s Your Party, It’s So Awful On Old School Friday

October 10th, 2009 by cooper

Welcome to a barely belated Old School Friday, where the theme is Freshman Year.

They Might Be Giants sang You’re Not The Boss of Me, Pearl Jam covered Last Kiss, Eminen was calling out the Real Slim Shady. I was introduced to Ben Harper with Burn To Shine, and SOAD, with Spiders.

I was studying, breaking up with a a boyfriend named Dylan, and playing soccer. Marc Anthony needed to know, and Ben Folds was thinking about the army. I wasn’t great at soccer, never Smooth like Santana, yet never breathless, like The Coors. I tried, like Macy Gray.

Merely the tip of the iceberg for the 9th grade play-list .

My favorite was a song by Hole called Awful. Most girls my age wanted to be Britney Spears. I wanted to be Courtney Love. Admittedly, neither was the ideal choice for a role model.

Do you remember your Freshman year of high school?

You’re not the boss of me now, you’re not the boss of me now… Malcomb by any other name would still be annoying in the middle.

Freshman year in high school… don’t even want to think about it. Broken nose, black eyes, bruises… and only a couple of goals to show for it.

Didn’t play soccer until my Jr. year. But my friend Christy wanted to give me a little brown sugar, and it made me feel the earth move under my feet when she started undoing my belt while asking me if I knew what the quickest way to a man’s heart was…

    Yeah, I’m old.

I think my freshman year hits were Pink Floyd’s The Wall and Diana Ross’ Upside Down. Unless you mean college. I had a lot of freshman years of college beginning in the 70s and ending in ’93 or so.

I remember Korn’s “falling away from me” and a lot of Red Hot Chili Peppers.
I’ve never heard that Hole song. Come to think of it I don’t think I’ve ever listened to Hole.

Love looked in pretty decent shape at that timne.

Makes me so happy you wanted to be Courtney Love. Not a great role model but a person to aspire to be at 14

Freshman year? They had them back in the 60’s? Freshman year of college I could recount every moment of. There were hundreds of great songs but the two I associate most with it were “nights of white satin” though that might have been the prior year and “volunteers of America” again might have been the prior year – but they were played a lot. And the Beatles White Album and.….

I admit I was a Spears fan at that age, I do love Courtney Love’s writing, she was quite a poet.

I just said that above so I changed it so as not to be redundant. She was, and looking back I should have appreciated her more, before she went wacko.

I remember RHCP and SOAD being popular. I don’t remember even thinking of Britney Spears.

The World is Not Enough/Garbage, would be my choice. I think that was ninth grade.

College, I can’t even remmember. It’s more of a blur.

I used to like courtney love. She went from drug addiction to spending addiction. Great song though.

I just had to look up what age I would have been for my “freshman” year — our education system is wildly different than yours.

1987, which lands me firmly in the middle of the music I now regard as perhaps the most memorable. Interesting…

Howard Jones, Nik Kershaw, Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran…

I always dug Courtney for just being who she was…didn’t get into the music much, though…

Those years are all mixed up together in my head. I’m not sure I could seperate them oout without looking up the year. Great Hole song btw.

I remember the Beastie Boys were big. “Paul Revere” and “Brass Monkey” and “Fight For Your Right” – that whole first album. Actually, that started in 8th grade, because I remember that’s when I began writing color-coded raps with that old Bic blue barrell, four-color pen and liberally using the word “girlies.” And “Red Red Wine” by UB40. George Michael had just gone solo. And I seem to recall GNR in there somewhere, too.

I often wonder whatever happened to that pen.

I try to forget those high school years, but in light of Facebook, it’s hard not to have the old memory jarred. I remember we were trying to stage a walkout in response to the first Gulf War. When on a band trip that year, Paradise City and Nothing Compares to You were playing on a radio. Man oh man…

Sorry I haven’t been by lately. Tied up with my ball project — November 30th hopefully no more on it — and time to market it through the outlets.

You as Courtney Love? Well, we all go through those phases…

Read your health care rant. Yeah, it sucks that the debate is never going to work to actually convince anyone. Though I guess I prefer having health care coverage than not. (9 Years without it…lucky I’ve not been sick or hurt.)

Anyways, I’ll hopefully stop by more.

As always, you got good opinions to read.
