The Old School Friday theme this week is “My Theme Song”.
My wish, everyone’s wish I’m sure, is that at 90 years old I can say, without crossing my fingers, that “My Way” was my theme song. Right now my way isn’t always clear, but my fingers are crossed. Until that time it’s tempting to go with Tori Amos’s Girl Disappearing, but that’s predictable, not old school enough for the occasion, and I’m tired of metaphors. Sometimes saying it like it is is better. If it weren’t labeled “Old School” I go with India Arie’s “I Am Not My Hair”. This because I am not my hair, nor are you, a good thing for those who happen to be bald.
This version with Pink.
The Old School label leads me down elder street where it’s back to metaphors with Moon River, a good theme for this time of my life. I loved this song before I ever saw the film.
The song, as everyone living on the planet knows, is from the 1961 film Breakfast At Tiffany’s. Audrey Hepburn sang it in the movie, on the original soundtrack it was dubbed. The song has many covers, from Mancini’s orchestrated soundtrack version, Streisand, the version my grandmother insists is the best - Andy Williams, Lena Horne, Morrissey, Diana Ross with Carreras Domingo, Shirley Bassey, Judy Garland, Elton Johns kick-ass version, Andrea Ross, Sarah Brightman and more, including some entertaining you tubers performances.
I’m going with R.E.M today, because Michael Stipes with hair was before my time ( Old School). He’s not his hair either, as we’ve seen over the years, but I like this version. Enjoy them all via the links.

I am clearly not my hair, as that’s thinning. I did not know Moon River was from Breakfast At Tiffany’s. Huh. This looks like a planet.

“did not know Moon River was from Breakfast At Tiffany’s.”
You’re just pulling my chain right?
I was surprised to see the R.E.M. version. Pretty good. I’d but a full version of that.
I’ve only seen Breakfast at Tiffany’s once and that was a couple of years ago.
India Arie is a staple around here. My wife loves her.

I love your wife. Aagain.
The first song is a metaphor too, for the experience of A A Women and again for every women, it’s easier to figure out which makes is easier to listen to. And she’s better than Tori Amos.
Love Michael Stipes, with or without hair, never heard him sing moon river, awesome.

I don’t want to leave the impression I listen to girl songs. I don’t.
No, really I don’t

exactly, to the first comment,
sure, to the second.
I don’t have a theme either. One a day, like a vitamin.
I love both songs.
The compilation of MR versions is cool, thanks. The acoustics and harmony on the Stipes version are great.

Like a vitamin. Yea I liked it.
ahhh yes Breakfast at Tiffany’s….
my daughter and I watched it just last week …again :)
REM :) good pick Cooper

I can see it being something you and your daughter would enjoy together Kim.
Love the India Arie and Pink, that song is great. I like Audrey Hepburn’s version too. The REM CD with Moon River on it was only published in Britain right? I know it’s not available as an mp3 single download anywhere.
It’s on the “Reckoning” [with import bonus tracks] available from B and N on line. The amazon version carries US bonus tracks, and moon river isn’t one of them.
You make me laugh. If I make it to 90 I will let you know if I ever like Sinatra or Sinatra & My Way
Loved the links. Haven’t gotten to them all yet as Elton John led me to other songs. So many links. Such a beautiful evening….think being outdoors, and listening to nature, rules.
I thought the designated life theme song was “over the rainbow” as I have been hearing it everywhere

Uh, yes I hope to live the sentiment–just not Sinatra’s version though he lived a charmed life.
“I am not my hair” has unfortunately always been a life theme of mine. I should and do feel fortunate to have so much hair on my head at my advanced age

That tends to happen on you tube one thing lead to another to another and so on and so forth.
It’s the words, more than the singing (or singer) of it, that I hope will pan out. ;)
Can’t think of my theme song.
R.E.M.’s version is great a cappella, Elton John’s accompanied version is, like you said, kick ass.

I can get into them all depending on the moment.
It was hard for me to pick just one theme song because it normally depends on the color of the day. But I like I Am Not My Hair…and love Moon River…

Marv, I know. Those self themes are very time dependent.
I really like REM. I don’t know why I don’t have more than a couple of their songs on iTunes.
At least you’ll always be able to say you knew Bone when he had hair. Assuming you’re willing to admit you knew him at all.

You gotta get you some more. R.E.M. not hair.
I am waiting to say I knew Bone when he was just a writer with a blog, but now he’s blooger with a writ….
The R.E.M. moon river – Nice.
