Let’s Dance on Old School Friday

June 20th, 2009 by cooper

It’s Old School Friday, and the theme is “Let’s Dance”. I ‘m not much of a dancer, at least in public, thinking of sweaty guys in tee-shirts or guys in suits swiveling their hips to a salsa never really does it for me. Ok scratch that I do kind of like the swiveling of hips thing, but only to watch. There are way too many songs to dance to, most people can probably dance to anything, at least in the privacy of their own homes.

I do have to dance though. I received a wedding invitation from a good friend from my last (very first real) job. The invitation came with a note suggesting gifts to a certain charity, but with a codicil asking all guests, as a gift to the bride and groom, learn the Syrtaki/Sirtaki, which will be played in several styles throughout the reception. The Sirtaki, or Zorba’s Dance as it’s called, is the dance choreographed by Giorgos Provias for the composition of the same name by Mikis Theodorakis, both the music and the dance were for the film Zorba the Greek. The dance used traditional Greek folk dances in kind of a mix and ended up with another traditional Greek folk dance. It is danced all over the world, at weddings at bars, on cruise ships, by Riverdancers and at the ballet. As these things go the talented Anthony Quinn, who was not only an actor but a gifted writer and artist, was not Greek but Mexican.

The scene from Zobra the Greek where Anthony Quinn dances this piece on the beach.

This is a poor quality video, but is most comprehensive in that it looks like the whole dance she wants us to learn. Including those knee dip things. Yikes

I suppose if Lucy can do it.…

Jose Feliciano’s version.

Yeah I know it’s almost 3 in the morning on Saturday, but dinner with the girls went late. It’s still Friday in my heart.

peace

Anthony Quinn and Jose Feliciano: Each are referenced in different episodes of Seinfeld.

I’m in a wedding today. Wow, having to learn a dance for a wedding? Thankfully, in all the weddings I’ve groomsmanned in, no one has ever required me to learn a dance. (I’ve actually been discouraged from dancing at least once.) I think I’d be more motivated if it was Riverdance or the electric slide.

That is a cool request. I’d be willing to learn that dance as a gift to the bride and groom. Feliciiano version is nice but isn’t that thing he says at the start “OPA” not sure how it’s spelled, Greek term?

It is a nice gift even if you only learn part of it.

I think he sings opa because it is usually yelled at the start or through out that dance it is just a Greek expression they use sort of like rolling stones singing “start it up” something like that.

You are going to a big fat greek wedding? Beware the ozo (or however you spell it), especially if they pour it over licorice cake.

      sounds good to me..lol

In a few weeks yes a Greek and Latino wedding actually, but we don’t have to learn the Cuban Rumba…too bad because I know that one.

Why is the lucy video so small?
I think I’ve done that on a beach before, it’s really easy after few drinks. ;)
