They’ll Smile To Your Face On Old School Friday

It’s Old School Friday and the theme is “Soul Train“.

It appears most performers on Soul Train lip synced their songs, as you can clearly see in the following video as David Bowie, being one of the first white people, on a minuscule list of maybe 3 white people, to be invited to perform on the show, did so while rather intoxicated, high or both. Word on the street was he was nervous because it was huge honor to be invited, and we can assume he didn’t want to be booed off the stage, but really how bad can one lip sync anyway?

This is one of the few performances I can find which appears to be not lip synced. Ike and Tina Turner. Tina is so awesome in this clip I must put it here despite my dislike for Ike.

An awesome classic by the O’ Jays. Back Stabbers.

Soul Train Addicts Collection, featuring a lot of the “Soul Train dancers” clips.

Soul Train got a new owner last summer, ‘Soul Train’ Gets New Owner, “when MadVision Entertainment bought the franchise from its founder, Don Cornelius”. There are plans to open up the archives, for the elderly, and restart the show for a younger audience. Though the show went off the air in 2006 it was never canceled.

  1. Tina Turner is all time.

  2. Ike was a horrible husband and a sorry excuse for a man, yes. That same Ike Turner was a huge influence on music and musicians, go figure. That performance was tight.

    O’Jays are timeless.

    Happy OSF.

  3. Tina rocks. I didn’t know Soul Train was on for that long. it’d be great to have access to the complete archive.
I never knew the O’Jays sang Back Stabbers but they sang Love Train, I knew that for some reason

    • 3 white people may not be correct, my sources showed several different opinions on that. The archives are pretty limited so hopefully they new owners will release more soon.

  6. I’m old. I remember most all variety shows having bands, and singers lip sync in the 80s.
I never understood the rational reasons for it.
Of course stereo TV broadcast wasn’t available until that late 80s.

    I hate feeling old.

  7. When did that go off the air? I remember seeing it a when I was small and then it must have gone syndicated, we only had “regular” shitty television.

Is there anyone who doesn’t love Tina?

I hate when the comments are off.

  12. I love your Mother’s Day post you person who always mentions when other people have their comments off. Your mother’s day post made me smile.

I never understood the socks thing. I called my mother “Maw” she hated it and I did it more. I was an adult.

Is today an American holiday or did my neighbors just put one on because somehow they know I don’t consider one to be a sign of patriotism?

  13. Loved your poem, the comments off thing is necessary at times I understand, or maybe I don’t understand – not getting comments much myself, but I had to comment on it. Made me smile.

Tina is great, she can put on a show.I love watching those soul train dancers.

Soul Train is such a standard I wonder if they can keep it as such when bringing it back?

    • I usually do it on the weekends, when the readers are usually at rest, partying or …playing golf. I think it is a nice break for all of us. I also try to do it on posts which are really not very comentable…or commendable…one or the other.
