The First 101 Days

I’m a day or so late. This, a fifteen minute break I am taking while finishing a paper that seems longer than most dissertations.

I’m happy we no longer torture, but disappointed we won’t consider prosecution, or at least trying those who did torture. Unmindful of our mindlessness we use history to guide us. I think it’s because we like to say “history repeats itself” so much we totally disregard the fact that it would stop repeating itself we stopped repeating it. The path of least resistance is to do nothing.

That’s all about resistance, there will be no swine flu speak here.

Good news for the first 100 days: We did not make the list of the worst ten countries to be a blogger in, and my web host now offers UNLIMITED space and traffic on all their shared hosting accounts, thank you very much.

Good piece by Naomi Wolf, Afghanistan’s Feminist Revolution.

Peace

  • Re: torture. We the People should have stopped it while it was going on. And tossed on their ears those who were doing it. We did not. Now we have the choice of spending the next forty years chasing perps, or following the Reconciliation path of the Republic of South Africa at the close of apartheid (and torture that makes waterboarding seem like kindergarten at the beach). Nelson Mandela, I think, had the right answer.

  • We’re usually unmindful of our mindlessness. The whole “what’s past is past” thing is wrong. I think we need to be vigilant on the internet thing, we’re far from that list but you just never know what congress can pass while we aren’t paying attention.
    Cool on the bandwidth.

  • Agree with everything you say (just about) but I do agree with Obama on prosecution. The CIA agents that should not be prosecuted when they were working under the legal framework of the Bush White House. There’s only three people that should be put away — Bush, Cheney and Rumsfield.

  • Did you see the latest Pew Research on torture? It was limited, but according to it, or my best interpretation of it, we live in a country where almost half the people think it’s ok to torture under certain circumstance, at least at any given time. Makes you look at your neighbors in a different way.
