I’m back in time for Old School Friday, a nice way to ease back into the blog, but I first want to wish Pia safety, as North Myrtle Bach is burning. She recently moved there from NYC, and is renovating a home there. Pia be safe my friend.
The theme today is “never should been”.…
I’m going to start with this god-awful version of Both Sides now performed by Leonard Nimoy of Star Trek fame. The clip is kind of cute, the song horrible, but if you think that is a good version of that song you’ve never really heard Joni Mitchell, my preferred version.
The Wedding Song never should have been written. If I never hear it again I’ll be happy. I suggest replacing it with Tracy Chapman’s Wedding Song. That whole “a man will leave his mother” always stuck in my throat, and I wonder at the lack of originality of the million or so people who have used this at their wedding. If you’ve used it I don’t mean you, just those others, the ones who don’t read my blog.
My other choice — I’m leaving out thousands of the most hokey country songs because they are usually so bad as to be almost good — stems from the torture of seeing rows of people age 4 to 94 lined up to dance to this at any of a variety of group events from weddings, to conferences or bar nights.

Hahaha. May I borrow this? If so, I can now do like ten posts I’ve been avoiding for fear of offending someone.
I love “Both Sides Now” (the Joni Mitchell version), although the first time I ever heard it was on General Hospital.
Wait, there were six Village People? Why did I always think there were just five? I may be the construction guy for Halloween this year. He oozes cool. Of course, that’d mean dressing up for Halloween for the first time in umpteen years.

I’m always happy to help you realize the dream of being able to say what you mean without offending anyone.
Not surprised about the General Hospital.
I always thought there were 12 village people but that might have just been a nightmare.
Good grief. Nimoy did “Both Sides Now?” Didn’t somebody tell him not to mess with canon?
I hate it when naive YMCA kids do “YMCA”. I just want to scream “Think about the lyrics, for crying out loud ..!”
Welcome back.

I can probably get you a copy of Nimoy’s classic should you want one.:) I hear they have some left.
What a crime he committed doing that song. The mitchell version is fantastic, much better than that other version by Judy Collins.
I dance when I hear YMCA, so yea it shouldn’t have been written.
I’m not married so you can’t insult me, but if I ever get married I hope my future spouse doesn’t want that song because i don’t think I’ll be able to alow it after this.

It’s just such a pathetic song. Also I have heard of your dancing and it’s not a good report.
I have no words…
I know what you mean. Maybe wordless Wednesdays should be postings about things which shock us to speechlessness.
there are comments on the nimoy video by people who “love hearing leonard nimoy sing”???????????
I’m-astonished.
That wedding song is such a cop out, but I think you probably offended a half million people.
I love the Village People.

Why was The Village People formed is the bigger question. Hubby said it was the end of the acid dropping era. Maybe he’s right and everybody’s brains were fried.
In the late ‘70s, disco was the music of the gay bars and clubs. The Village People were formed to play to this audience. Each costumed character is a “fantasy male”; audience members would recognize, and identify with, these stereotypes. In fact, the People copied the gay men of Greenwich Village NY (yep), who would promenade in “fantasy” costumes just like those the group adopted. When disco went mainstream, the People rode the wave.

Your choice was pretty cringe worthy as as well hd.
Oooh, skewering The Village People ain’t going to score you a lot of points in my neck of the woods, Miss Cooper. LOL
And I always liked Hayley Westenra’s version of “Both Sides Now.”

I just can’t stand that song any longer.
I’ll wear armor next time I visit.
You have no idea how much I hate both The Village People and YMCA, but from you it puts a smile on my face.
Thanks much :) The fire is mostly contained and the few people I know in Barefoot Resort went back home and to work yesterday actually.

I’m relieved to hear it, also relieved to hear your village people stance. ;)
Do not hate on the Village People. They are a part of our culture and will never go away.;)
What was Nimoy thinking?
I’m totally with you on the Wedding Song.

I’m not hating on them just opining as is my right — don’t think Nimoy was thinking. Is he still alive?
I’d forgotten how many ridiculous things they used to make Nimoy do on that show. That was great.

I never really watch the old ST shows, though I’ve seen them here and there. I know there are fans aplenty I just can’t see it.
Been meaning to see about joining the OSF group but life gets in the way… not offended by having to listen to Nimoy “sing” but he’s done plenty of other good stuff so I’ll give him a pass on that dog.
Gonna do my own OSF, perhaps OSS, and dedicate The LA’s most well-received song. …

It takes a couple little clicks of the mouse to old school it and you know the theme a week ahead, giving you tine to ponder it at soccer games, or other kiddie events, work — when you should be working, and while on the toilet.
aww my son loves the village people, Nimoy not so much.
We did not marry to the wedding song, so you didn’t offend me.
