Stand on Old School Friday

April 17th, 2009 by cooper

It’s Old School Friday and the theme this week is “bloggers choice”.

Old School is good, what is now was before, only before it was better, or so it seems. I wasn’t there, I can’t be certain, but I suspect.

For Everyman, from the 1973 Album of the same name by Jackson Brown. I happen to love this rather pop-ish cd and I like this song.

For Everyman — Win Media

Lyrics

Another JB favorite of mine, from Late for the Sky, 1984, Fountain of Sorrow, an affectionately reflective song.

Lyrics
I recommend both CD’S.

The finale.

What you thought I’d end this with Jackson Brown?

Stand from the 1969 Album of the same name, by Sly and The Family Stone.

Studio Version.

Stand
In the end you’ll still be you
One that’s done all the things you set out to do
Stand
There’s a cross for you to bear
Things to go through if you’re going anywhere
Stand
For the things you know are right
It s the truth that the truth makes them so uptight
Stand
All the things you want are real
You have you to complete and there is no deal
Stand. stand, stand
Stand. stand, stand
Stand
You’ve been sitting much too long
There’s a permanent crease in your right and wrong
Stand
There’s a midget standing tall
And the giant beside him about to fall
Stand. stand, stand
Stand. stand, stand
Stand
They will try to make you crawl
And they know what you’re saying makes sense and all
Stand
Don’t you know that you are free
Well at least in your mind if you want to be

Everybody
Stand, stand, stand

Hmmm. I never listened to too much Jackson Browne, but I might have to in the future after listening to these.

How can such a bad recording be so good? Here’s some Sly trivia– Did you know he was the organist in Cornell West’s father’s church?

      Tsk,tsk, patience Doug.

You are full of the most need to know trivia. I think he really is Cornell West.I love that old video.

Joan Baez recorded “Fountain of Sorrow” too, I think she went out with JB or was that Joni Mitchell? I get them confused. I like Brown’s version better.

Sly and the Family Stone, what can I say, I wish there were more videos of them around.

I used to enjoy Jackson Browne, until his mawkish message came to stand, in my mind, for the generation (mine) that got rich off Steal This Book and, faced with its own hypocrisy, sought solace in navel-gazing and cocaine.

The Sly vid reminded me of the most recent Eagles live concert videos, where they sound just like they’re in the studio. I wondered “how could this be?” Then heard a video recording of one of the amateur bands with which I play — and reacted in total astonishment, “that’s us?!?” All the mistakes, background noises, etc. had been edited out. It almost feels like we’re lying to people.

  7. I must say, I don’t know Jackson Brown too tough. I am familiar with a few songs, but not too much. But Sly? That goes without saying. :)

    Happy OSF!

OK, so today at work I’m thinking of blogging and what I might blog today when the thought popped into my head, “Oh, it’s Old School Friday at Cooper’s.”

Congratulations. You are in my brain.

I liked Jackson Brown better before he decided to raise his hand to his girlfriend. Still, Lawyers in Love is a catchy tune.

I didn’t know about the abuse thing I just looked it up and it looks to me like the police report from that night show no injuries what so ever but …I’m not feeling kind of sick and have to take the video out. I will now have to stop listening to his music. More investigating when I return at the end of the week.
