A Fucking Hero?

My “observation and report” on the Jody Hill directed, Seth Rogen starring, venal film of the same name, made at Legendary Pictures, and distributed by Warner Bros.

SETH ROGEN: when we’re having sex and she’s unconscious like you can literally feel the audience thinking, like, how the fuck are they going to make this okay? Like, what can possibly be said or done that I’m not going to walk out of the movie theater in the next thirty seconds? … And then she says, like, the one thing that makes it all okay:

BRANDI: “Why are you stopping, motherfucker?”

When your best friend, drunk out of his mind, and hardly able to stand, implores you to hand him the car keys, do you give them to him? Of course you don’t.

Then what is so funny/OK about fucking a drunk out of her mind, pill popping, alcoholic after she vomits all over herself, when she momentarily arouses from her stupor to tell you to go on?

Answer, nothing. It’s called rape, there is no way you can spin this to make it alright.

I hope these men end up with someone’s dick up their ass one night when they’ve had too much tequila. OOPS. Do you think Seth Rogen would be eager to star in that movie? Warners Brothers so eager to distribute it?

Anna Faris, are you that desperate for work? Shame on you. Yes, and please don’t start on me for blaming the women. Shame, shame, shame on her.

I also hope this movie fails miserably, but given the searches for “rape”, “fun with rape”, “how to rape”, “how to get away with date rape” and so on that land here, a site which has some but not all that many posts in which the tags are rape, rape culture, or date rape, I fear the worst. Warner Brothers probably did their research based on internet search terms.

  • I’d find it impossible to sit there and watch this movie, never mind laugh at it. Looks like it missed it’s mark of being some dark comedy with a meaning.

I haven’t been on a computer for fun in months. There doesn’t seem to be enough good news these days, even in entertainment.

    • I don’t think you missed a thing. Have fun on your work/trip. I was in Dubai when I was 11, not tower then.

  • I cannot imagine sitting through 5 minutes more of this idiocy. I also believe that you are quite right that scene where she is clearly drunk is absolutely rape. People need to understand that consent to sex must be enthusiastic otherwise it is rape. The fact that people could find this funny shows exactly how pervasive our rape culture really is. While I am not in the least bit surprised, I am very disgusted.

    • I just could fathom their logic, but it just puts an exclamation point to everything I was already pretty sure of.

  • Your analogy easily wiped away the faulty reasoning they used to make this alright. Yes, some people will find this funny, like you said, internet search terms give you a good idea at what people are looking for, but it is not the whole picture.

I don’t find it funny. I bet more people than not will find it not so funny and will stay away from the whole idea of it.

  • The movie industry execs who allowed this type of movie to be made need a good hard punch to the mouth. If that doesn’t work, you can always borrow my pick-axe. Based on your description, I’m not even going to bother to click on the vid.

    • It’s purely a money thing, quick money for a cheaply made movie with scenes meant to titillate though but which aren’t at all worthy of the thinking.

Now I really hate that guy, what an idiot. I hate feeling so hateful. There smug little convo makes me want to throw up.

Warners? I’m surprised it’s not Disney they will do anything if they for money, this doesn’t sound at all clever so I hope it brings in nothing. Too bad Anna fell to this, she was so good in Lost in Translation.

    • I’m never even sure who half these actresses and actresses are I’d never know here as the girl in Lost in translation unless someone had mentioned it. I don’t see her as really significant in the shceme of life but still, what a shame.

  • I’ve given up watching Hollywood movies, and this reminds me why I did so.

  • It’s my nature to see things from both sides, so try not to be too quick to disregard my view.

Obviously it’s quite disgusting, and Seth Rogen try’s to explain that it is quite uneasy to swallow.
I’m certain the movie goes beyond these clips to establish that she isn’t exactly the type of person to be very responsible at all.
Still, no, not right in any case.

Your concern is that by presenting this in a feature film that it means it’s okay which of course it’s not.

Originally I hadn’t known about this scene, and wasn’t interested in this movie anyway, so I probably wouldn’t have noticed.
It’s sick, disgusting, but it’s a part of this warped comedy which is like any other disgusting element of any story, or movie.

We live in a culture where pretty much everyone disregards everything
on almost every level. If I had to list how much irreverence I witness throughout this world every day (which I often do) I’d never stop.
Too much of our civilization gives movies, and entertainment too much weight, too much importance. It’s how our generation is growing, to lust being the center of attention…YouTube video bloggers are a good examples of people desperate to find value by imitating a culture that only seems to glorify entertainment as it’s most important value. Even there you see people typing random mean comments, and irreverence seems to be everyone’s only defense, to say that they don’t care either way, then move on.
We give entertainment too much legitimacy, so all we can do is move on.
I keep hoping that we as a culture start to realize that we’re painting this Earth with too many idiots interested in over consumption, but it’s not changing, until eventually we’ll be forced to, and then this world really won’t be pretty to look at any more.

    • There really is a difference between warped comedy and sanctioned rape. And you are right it doesn’t matter what kind of person she is, Seth Rogen’s ugly characters always seem to end up fucking drunk women though, probably the same in real life.

  • I was never able to watch the first Judd Apatow movie. Good to know I’m still right.

  • What in the sam hell? I had absolutely no desire to see this movie, but now? I am thinking about making a sign and protesting outside the theatre…this is bullshit. When exactly did it become funny to portray rape in a movie? And when did it become okay for women to be okay with this shit?

I am disgusted…and it is only 7:00 in the morning…

  • I couldn’t even watch the vid. Doug’s always right (pun intended) except when…

I don’t remember exactly when Fatal Attraction came out but that changed movies and society’s more’s forever. It was OK to portray a woman as a psychotic because according to men and many women, though never explicitly stated, so many women were. I couldn’t put my feelings into a succinct paragraph then. Just knew it was wrong.

  • They missed the mark, trying too hard to make a dark comedy they
went over the line. The most disturbing thing is their excuse for making it alright.

    His girlfriend must be proud.

    • It looks fairly stupid overall anyway, so no great loss. I’mnot sure where the good movies are but I haven’t seen one is a long time.

  • Bromances are in and frat brother humor, which never amused me, is quickly devolving. Bet this movie was shot fast and cheap.

I’ve asked many a fellow about the possible attractions of sex with a comatose or semi-comatose woman. The ones I know well, the ones who are good lovers, would never consider the prospect because they know that good sex requires total engagement with the other person.

Getting off, on the other hand, does not, and in mixed company there have always been a few guys who snicker, look quickly at each other, and then appear to study their fingernails.

A former acquaintance — our children played together — once mentioned that she was a heavy sleeper and had given her husband permission to have sex with her while she slept. She didn’t even know it was happening until the next day when he said, “Thank you, last night was great.”

    Wassup with that?????!!!!????

    • A man who will engage in the sex act with someone who is not engaged in IT with him has problems on so many levels, starting with but not limited to his character.
