Don’t Worry Baby Everything’s Gonna Be Alright on Old School Friday

Old School Friday. The theme this week is songs with “Baby” in the title.

What’s not to love about a song which can be a kiss off goodbye to anything or anyone, be it a way of life or way of thought. A song that inspired the 1966 Joyce Carol Oats short story Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been, It’s All Over Now Baby Blue. Written and originally recorded by Bob Dylan, the song has been performed and recorded by many artists.

Australian songwriter/musician Graham Bonnet recorded Dylan’s song in 1977 and had a successful run in Australia. Graham Bonnet version.
Marianne Faithful’s version is pretty sweet, even though this isn’t a great audio, check it out. Faithful’s version. The standard Dylan version of It’s All Over Now Baby Blue.

And because I’m a bit of a Badfinger freak, check out Baby Blue.

I love the harmony of The Beach Boys, but what is more interesting to me is the girls in this video, they aren’t surfing by themselves, they’re surfing tandem with guys, or sitting on the beach watching their men surf.

I vaguely remember being on a beach in Maui with Ethan, he plopped on to the beach with a book and a bottle of water. I headed out to the impact zone for some heavy — heavy for Maui but not heavy in the real surfing sense of the word — waves. Ethan said he thought it looked a little rough, and maybe I should reconsider. I kissed his check, patted him on the head and said “Don’t Worry Baby, everything will turn out alright”.

“Social progress can be measured by the surfing social position of the female sex”, Marx I believe.

  • I think you blew my mind on this post. Excellent Marx quote. Amazing how you can go from quoting Shakespeare to Marx and make it all fit. Amazing Cooper. Talent indeed.

    • Is this like having Simon Cowell tell me my performance is awesome — on American Idol, being the “first to arrive” on a leg of the “Amazing Race”, and getting 10’s across the board on Dancing With Stars, all rolled into one.
      ;)

  • Good song, Baby Blue. It reminds me I’ve never watched The Last Waltz, in which I’ve heard Van Morrison does a version.

    Groucho or Karl?

  • I can’t imagine surfing tandem, but I like the hula hoops. ;)
You do have a way with wordishness and writing.
Haven’t heard either of those baby blue songs in a long time. The beach boys did have some sweet harmony.

  • Amazing! I normally don’t do The Beach Boys, but maybe Saturday has me in a BB frame of mind?

I like the new theme…pretty and green…looks like Spring around here!

    • I hear certain Saturdays can do that do people. It is Spring, but I’m getting kind of nervous without a right sided sidebar.

  • Think forty something odd years ago, that harmony was something passed on to generations of boy bands. Never appreciated them until after college. It wasn’t cool.

You do great things with old school friday memes, including making statements on the state of society, only I’d have been the tandem-ee even back then.

I like the new format, the post is right in the middle where it should be.

    • I can’t think forty something years ago all that well because I wasn’t here but I try.
Yea we’ll see. I had my housemate look over a couple of themes and vote but like I said above I’m anxious without a right sidebar.

  • Seriously good stuff. I’m with Jacob, the girl would have to hold me up. The video is kind of mesmerizing.

I didn’t know that about the Dylan song. I don’t want to admit I never read Joyce Carol Oates, but I might as well use this as a confessional.

Nice use of the Marx quote?

  • The Dylan song– good choice. I prefer Dylans’ version, and Badfinger — what a sad story all around.

I was surprised there weren’t more songs with “baby in the title. I looked, thinking there would be thousands. Not the case.

I liked the way the post played out before posting before the Beach Boys video. Marx, only you. Good work.

  • I’ve never understood people who don’t listen to music of some kind.

  • uh Annette. I wanted to grow up and be just like her.
We get the Beach Boys without a Wilson but with the surviving member of Jan & Dean in May. It’s a really big deal here. I love it and the surviving member of Jan & Dan almost makes up for the lack of a Wilson. Actually I saw Brian in concert a few years ago (Smile) and it was mesmerizing He never moved the entire concert – just his mouth

  • Great choice, but than I picked the same song by the Beach Boys. And my second choice was Dylan and It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue. And I know that at least two members of Badfinger are dead, suicide if I’m correct.

  • I was glued to this story almost forgetting it was about OSF. You are a great storyteller… and your choice in music isn’t so bad either. ;-)

    Happy OSF (er.. Monday lol)
