Give Me Your heart and I’ll Love You Till Tuesday

Sunday nights notes on Tuesday this week, if you don’t mind. Having housemates is counterproductive to blogging, but favorable to bar crawls at midnight. I recommend having housemates, if only temporarily. The situation has helped me realize the dream of waking to the smell of coffee already brewed, even if not always the way I like it. Getting used to having people around almost all the time, even if not permanent, is difficult but not world ending. My world ended of course, but the real world is still here. While I’m working hard to be a friendly housemate, and midnight conversationalist extraordinaire I forgot to blog. Consequently I’m updating two blogs this evening.

Notes:
I was happy to see Generación Y on Time’s list of Top 25 Blogs of 2009. There was time I thought I was the only one reading it, and of course TPM is probably one of the most worthy blog reads of that genre around. And Hey Ya to Said the Gramaphone, one of my first mp3 blog reads and a read to this day thanks to the defunct Revolution in the Head, a blog which became All That Ever Mattered some time in 2007. The rest..well, Gawker media wore out their “I’m too hip for my ass” attitude years ago, though I kind of like Wonkette still. I still don’t know who the fuck Seth Grodin is, except that he has something to do with the web and in some NYT article last year he said “he was getting fat due to sitting on his ass in front of the computer too much”. That can’t be a good thing can it? It did prompt me to take a good look as my ass in the mirror though, and my jeans will be forever grateful for that.

I also love the list of the most overrated blogs because I was beginning to think I was the only one who has either never red them, or no longer reading them any longer.

Surprise, surprise, FB owns you. You, not me. I’ve not been back there since freshman year of college, so I really don’t care, except to say there are a lot of places online which own you once you spend enough time using them. I possibly own you, if you comment here, though there appears to be some dispute about that. For god sake people, if you put it on the internet it is out there owned or not by you or someone else, it is out there, don’t be so stupid. And don’t whine like a baby afterwords, or start stupid little Facebook groups to protest being owned.

Last but not least Should Be Famous has undergone an overhaul and a change of premise. Go check it out and feel free to leave feedback.

Title courtesy of from David Bowie Love You Till Tuesday.

Peace

  • Life always seems to be better with roommates. At least to me it was. I have no clue who Seth Grodin is either. I think most people in pop culture are way overrated.

Chris’s last blog post..Is It Ever Socialism?

  • You know fb owns me, but I don’t care. i won’t protest. I don’t get there much but it is the first place I go when I get to the computer. I am weaning off. I don’t want to know all those people any more.

I didn’t know “said the gramophone” was still around. cool.

You can have my comments. I don’t want them, unless someone is paying you for them that is.

    g’s last blog post..Enough Said

    • I hear a lot of people and places own you g.

If someone was paying me for them you’d be the last first to know.

  • “And don’t whine like a baby afterwords, or start stupid little Facebook groups to protest being owned.”

    heh, heh,

btw that list was better than most, with a couple of exceptions I’d keep most of it.

I read the fame blog, like the idea and the poem. ;)

  • That’s why I took off the option of uploading my posts wholesale to FB. I don’t like anybody else having my content to do with as they wish.

And, on a side note, it’s kind of sad to see Should Be Famous change its premise. I had hoped other people would recommend some good blogs for me. I hardly ever get to check other people’s blogs aside from the ones I read already that I was hoping someone else could do the digging for me.

But, since I’m one of the guilty parties who never took the time to recommend, I guess I can’t reap what I didn’t sow. I’m just glad I wasn’t one of the ones who e-mailed you to review my site. My site pales compare to yours and I would have been very surprised if anyone else recommended it to you.

Yet, for some reason, you’ve always stuck by reading it, Miss Cooper. I think that means more to me than the fact you reviewed it anyway without any prompting. Thanks for the vote of confidence.

  • I like Bleat, Go 2 Green and Bad Astronomy, Krugman. I don’t really think of his as a blog, even though it is. A better selection than I usually read. Can’t say I’ve ever read the Google blog, and don’t intend to start.

I’m sorry I never made it it to fame, this will give me a chance yes? I don’t blame you, there isn’t that kind of time.

johnm’s last blog post..Temperate Cities Emit Less Carbon

    • Sure
It’s your big chance John. Bad Astronomy kind of rock but all those Discovery blogs on my reader make it way too heavy.

  • I’m too old for midnight bar crawls, and not having alone time is something I couldn’t handle, but coffee ready for the drinking is tempting. Oh, that’s right. The hubs makes it on Sundays. As far as owning goes, I’d rather be owned by teh intranetz than the state, or BlueCross, or the banks. You know. All the usual suspects. At least with the web, I might be famous. ;)

    • “As far as owning goes, I’d rather be owned by teh intranetz than the state, or BlueCross, or the banks. You know. All the usual suspects. At least with the web, I might be famous.”

      Exactly. lol

  • I better go post or I’ll never make that list.

Do not dis the house mates, especially if they are making coffee. I hate making coffee.

Wait. Isn’t it better to be owned than disowned?

I’m sorry I could have recommended some good blogs but I couldn’t have written about them like you did. Does that make me a bad person?
Don’t answer that. I won’t do anything until I see the work of others. I don’t want to embarrass myself.

  • It’s not actually certain whether or not these EULAs are actually legal Of course, like all corporate entities, FB lives by Caveat Emptor.

But those stupid groups that protested it? Got Facebook to change it’s policy. Doesn’t seem pointless to me. =P

EsotericWombat’s last blog post..Is he even trying to hide it?

    • I guess because I think expending energy on a site like that is wasteful when there are better thing to protest complain about or take care of but if social site are the center of one’s universe I guess it would seem important.

  • That would be one thing if this were just about Facebook, but I don’t see it that way. As an artist of any stripe, ownership of your work is the Most Important Thing You Have Going For You. And like you said, this sort of language isn’t just limited to Facebook Myspace has had it too. Myspace, which nowadays is primarily known as a means for musicians to showcase their songs. At some point or another (I forget if it’s still in place), AOL had a similar policy about things transmitted via its instant messaging. Which means that if you’re collaborating with someone else over instant message to write a screenplay, they could attempt to claim ownership of key concepts.

And they’re always hidden insidiously within lengthy agreements that were specifically designed so that end users would ignore them. Yes, we should be careful, but it’s just as important that it’s made absolutely clear that this Will Not Stand. A budding artist has enough to contend with as it stands without having to deal with corporate intellectual property harvesters trying to foist away from them that which is rightfully theirs.

And the effort expended to create or join a facebook group protesting it is considerably less than the effort you took to write this post, or I to respond to it. The opportunity cost to stand up to any injustice, no matter how small, is never a good reason not to stand up to it. It’s true that there are limits to what we can make noise about, but I’ve yet to meet anyone who has tested those limits to any extent.

EsotericWombat’s last blog post..Is he even trying to hide it?

    • Eh it doesn’t change my opinion. If you want to keep it then promote it another way the internet is not set up necessarily to protect works like that it is too massive. If rules were established there would be a protest over that.

As I don’t use routinely FB or My Space it’s not that important to me.

    • I also want to say that if you post yourself singing a song you wrote in my comments I’ll let you keep it. Cuz you’re special. ;)

  • I have had posts taken by people who promised to pay, even asked for all my identifying info. Then didn’t pay

I love the few commenters I get and know more people read my blog as the emails keep coming in. Honestly answering emails from people I don’t know is burdensome

I’m having a hard time blogging and don’t know if I should continue, but I will always comment on certain blogs:)

    pia’s last blog post..

    • Eh why should they pay they can scrap you content, mine is scrapped all the time I stopped worrying about it because there is no time. The internet has it’s problems ‚most problematic for people like you — actual writers.

  • I sometimes wish I had a roomate. Well, maybe sometimes is too strong a word. Let’s go with rarely. But it does happen. It is nice to know there’s a living, breathing creature nearby. Hardly ever.

  • I appreciate you allowing me to be your roommate, but I know you can’t hear my snoring that far down the hall, my coffee is pretty good I think, but Ellen’s coffee stinks — dishwater. I was thrilled to see my first date referred to on the internet. It’s so worth living with you jut for that. ;)
I know you don’t read her, but I still like Dooce.

Oh, I might write a poem about black dresses. You’ll have to help me. lol
