Washington, with a couple million people struggling to get from here to there, usually on foot, was a pretty peaceful place yesterday. A little aggravation at the metro for some folks, but that passed and our 44th president was inaugurated. People were just happy. The worst part for me was Rick Warren, how wise to get him out of the way right off the bat.
With all the complaints about the inaugural poem being “pedestrian” I admit to having liked it, and think those who spend their time critiquing inaugural poems certainly need to take those lofty sticks out of their collective behinds.
Doug Pascover, of Waking Ambrose, cynical libertarian-ish type that he is, wrote his own inaugural poem.
Some saw a savior to redeem from religion
Some saw a new skin on redemption.
Some saw olive leaves in the beak of a pigeon
Some saw a demon (it’s just fair to mention.)But let each one laugh that used to grouse,
Through all the hype I see
There’s a White Sox fan in the White House
And that’s glory enough for me.
A great little collage of front pages across the globe, 600 or so of them. Check it out by clicking on the image.

A reminder, on the edge of change as we are here, that tomorrow is the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. It’s also the 4th anniversary of Blog For Choice. Head over and sign up.
Peace

Wow. My poem touched the cerulean hide of eternity. Maybe Elizabeth Alexander and I should do a book together.

“cerulean hide of eternity”
Damn, you win.
Ah, come on, Coop. You hardly try.

I wanted to sing a sha na na song.
I saw some of the poem critiques, I laughed at the tone of the critiques, not a poet was among the ones I read.
That man has done some serious collections. I love it.

“I wanted to sing a sha na na song.”
Didn’t everyone?
Okay, it’s Wednesday night. 7:14PM. This country is still a frkkin’ mess. I thought Obama was gonna fix that.
Gotcha!

You just earned a padded room at “The Corner” (nr online)I believe.
My students watched it, it was a great learning tool, but I couldn’t enjoy the moment as much as I would have liked but I enjoyed it another way.
My father wanted a red sox fan but the option there wasn’t very good.

I’m still so befuddled at the fact you have “students” I can hardly compose myself.
Why does your father like the Red Sox? He’s from Venezuela isn’t he?
I am not a poet. I didn’t take but mandatory poetry in college, and that was not much.
To me no real poetry is bad, but like I said I don’t know poetry.
it’d be devastating if we had an Oriole fan in the White House, I think I understand.
Someone did a nice job with that collage, they must not work. ;)
I think baseball is a thinking man sport,( or that is what those who follow bball have led me to believe), so maybe it’s better than a football fan of any kind.
That collage is monumental! Thanks for finding and sharing. At home (in Germany) we watched a live internet feed over CBS – CNN was swamped.
Poetry is highly subjective – and I’m not sure about my own appreciation. The poem didn’t grab me, but the ideas were very good.
Aretha Franklin was incredible.
Recently watched Ken Burns’ documentary about baseball, including the story of Jack Robinson, the first African American player to enter major league baseball. The rascism was open and intense – as were the provocations, but he weathered them superhumanly and in such a way to command everybody’s respect. I think in the nxt years we will see something even more amazing.

I’m sure your appreciation is more learned than mine Inde.
I liked the collage, i got it at some pundit blog or another I forget which now.
Did you ever get the book shipped?
I think they should have read a Walt Whitman poem.
It seems like the book shipped, so now I’m waiting….

Damn, why didn’t I think of writing a poem to mark the occasion? Oh yeah, I can only write Victorian-influence love poetry. LOL Somehow I think that would be the wrong tone to set for the new president, though, so far, I’ve got to say I’m already breathing a little easier with Dubya out of power.

It would have been fun to see the faces of the people during the reading of a romantic prose of the Victorian Era.
I didn’t blog for choice as I didn’t blog and wasn’t in the mood to write anything either profound, meaningful or pithy about Roe. Then I read that Obama had to take the oath of office again last night because Roberts had screwed up so much, and many people didn’t believe he’s legally president
I love Doug’s poem. My original comment didn’t take and I didn’t realize that. Having a bad comment and blogging week
We know who those people are. Just because they’re out of power and we don’t like them doesn’t make them any less a threat. So I might blog something
Obama is a “t crosser” and an “I dotter”. I was pretty sure it would be taken again because of that. I kind of liked his annoyance with Biden’s words. We must laugh as much as we can.
Doug and the President can be forgiven for being Sox fans of the clorox color but at least they ain’t yankee fans.
I was thinking the other day that James Earl Jones and his Eye on the Prize would be a nice xmas gift for the cd player (can’t play the vhs due to no more vhs player), but then realized xmas just went past…
Kait has a smart dad. But then, most members of the Red Sox Nation are smarter than most.

i bet you liked loved Itzhak Perlman, Yo Yo Ma,and Gabriela Montero.
Great collage, and the baseball poem rocks. I didn’t dislike the poem.
