Old School Friday. This week the theme is “the year you graduated from high school”.
A year of wreck and residue, not my words, they belong to a poet, maybe Longfellow not sure. A year of wild hearts and heads not thinking clearly. I read “The Awakening”. The protagonist annoyed me. I tried re-reading “Catcher in the Rye” to make it what so many told me it was. It still wasn’t. I found success with “The Lexus and the Olive Tree”, though my heart was with “War and Peace” and “The Trial”. Still is. Some memories are seeded deep in the crevices of my brain, almost irretrievable, while some remain above the abyss ready for grasping at a moments notice should the need occur. It rarely does.
A rose did bloom and die that spring only to bloom again the subsequent fall, the autumn of the life after high school. A year so far away and gone so fast I’m not sure it occurred. But for photographs not yet faded enough to be truly old I’d be leaning on the side of “never happened”.
Then I remember the music.
You’ve all heard this before, we ( I mean you G, you too Dane) were cool, geeky for sure, we followed him to the 9:30 Club in D.C. at 15 and 16. We had his Java Joe’s cd, something you bought off the internet in 2001 (a great CD which has been remastered and re-released by the way). His first studio release didn’t occur until late 2002 making the charts in 2003. The year I graduated from High School.

I loves White Stripes.
I should read more fiction, but seldom ever. In high school I was a geek, but I mixed with a variety of stereo types. I had a huge crush on a very tall girl named Alicia. That was when I realized shooting for the moon would be easier than shooting for much taller women.
She did have a really good fashion sense for which I disturbingly made mental record of her entire wardrobe.
She looked happiest on days she wore the big baggy red sweater.
What does it all mean, & why? No clue.

I’ve been quite short on fiction reading the last few years as well.
I can’t even POSSIBLY explain how much I LOVE Jason Mraz! LOVE LOVE LOVE. We (my friends and I) became huge fans of his when we were still in college (around 2001). Eventually we drove ourselves all the way down to North Carolina to see him at a music festival.
He makes me smile.
