I missed John Lennon’s deathaversary. This should matter little considering he wrote songs, became an icon, and was murdered long before I was born, but I have always been a fan of his music. Despite that, I’ve yet to come to an understanding of how one man creates such a commotion (still) decades after his death while thousands of deaths (just as untimely) are ignored daily? Is it the events surrounding his death which made the man and his art greater than they were? Is what he was justification for those yearly pilgrimages to Manhattan?
Aware of his songs from “Imagine” to “Mother” I’m going to kick it back to the songs he wrote as half of the Lennon /McCarthy duo.
Happiness wasn’t a warm gun for Mr. Lennon but I love this song anyway…
Happiness is a Warm Gun — wma
Another song which rumor has it is the one song he most regrets writing and rightly so it’s a an ex– stalker boyfriend jingle.
Also rumored to be one of Lennon’s least favorite song — most of his songs were at one time or another — And This Bird Can Sing has a unison twin guitar attack which is petty sweet.
And then of course there’s Revolution.
Keep Resting In It
Peace

Somehow Imagine was always one of my favorites songs — timeless message, and always relevant. Also a beautiful song, even without all that.

Before you were born? I’m so very very elderly. Now that I think of it, I’m a year older than Lennon was when he died. Tell the truth: White Album or Shahrazade’s Wedding?
Doug’s last blog post..Pardon
No contest “Shahrazade’s Wedding”.
A friend of mine described the songs in the White Album as “pleasantly ambiguous, except for Why Don’t We Do it in the Road and Happiness is a Warm Gun”
Nothing says classy like using sex and heroin as metaphors for each other.

“pleasantly ambiguous, is quite apt.
Where have you been Wombat I miss ya.
John Lennon’s music is classic and timeless, mostly. I have a particular love for early Beatles music as it just makes me happy
John Lennon, the man, turned me off totally. The height of post-hippie absurdity was his and Yoko’s bed in. I hated how idolized he was for his “goodness” when I found it and him fake in many ways
That said I remember the day he was killed in vivid detail. And I too freaked when I realized I had reached an age he never would – but I freaked more over turning 28 as Janis Joplin never made it
It’s hard to say what brilliance is. It may be worth honoring the passing, but to continue to honor or not is a good question.
People still go to Graceland.
He sounds vindictive/crazy on “Run For Your Life”.
“Mother” is one of my favorites.
G’s last blog post..Yeah me.
Do we need to discuss this mother thing?
Not even born? I was high at the time I learned of his death. And then I was very, very low.
