Wonderland or Not

Dig If You Will The Picture Of You and I Engaged In a Kiss

Hold on to that totally “in your dreams, unrealistic, never in this life” picture for a sec. I imagine it’s a relief not to have to wrap your head around the politics of the day isn’t it?

It’s apolitical Old School Friday. The theme this week is “Prince”.

Nothing Compares To You” is a song written in the mid-1980s by Prince for an R and B band The Family. In 1990, a cover version by Sinéad O’Connor became a number-one hit in many countries, charting in the U.S., UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Germany.

The Family version is here. This version was never released as a single, and copyright does not allow for the audio to be played on the single you tube version so you have to scroll to the middle on this vid.

The Link will give you a win media file of Prince’s version.
Prince - with Rosie Gaines. Nothing Compares to You. It’s sweet.

This is the O’Connor version, perhaps the most well known and debatably the best version.

For me it’s always been When Doves Cry.

This is the win media version of When Doves Cry < --link, bought and paid for a long time ago ( as was the win media version of Nothing Compares to You - linked above), so I can put it here, but you can’t have it. It’s here because Prince is a little particular about his copyright, so if there is nothing below this link tomorrow don’t be surprised.

I think Prince is a great songwriter. A lot of his stuff still holds up today, which only proves how ahead-of-his-time he was.

Maybe when I was younger I just didn’t appreciate him because I don’t remember listening to a lot of him. As I got older I guess I grew into him.

“When Doves Cry” still remains my favorite of all his tracks.

There was a time when “Purple Rain” was the only CD or vid shown everywhere I went. I guess it was one of those great unifying CD’s that showed how similar people are but I began to be crazed from it

I like Prince one song at a time and “When Doves Cry” is great

I didn’t start listening to him until middle school so I wasn’t bombarded by all that.

Nothing Compares 2 U is definitely a classic Prince song and Sinead did it justice, but I love the Prince & Rosie Gains version too. When Doves Cry was one of my all time favorites. I don’t know why but it sometimes gets horrible reviews.

Your post was pretty spectacular shae.
I’m surprised Prince hasn’t called me yet and asked me to take down his vid. I can always hope.

Fav Prince: Sign O’ the Times. Let’s go Crazy. And of course, Sexy Motherfucker. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHIoLLWrIxo)

Kinda ruins any “Family” version of this blog…

Have a good weekend.

You have a good one too. Most of Prince’s stuff comes with a “may be offensive label.

I think “When Doves Cry” was right around when I first started getting into Prince. But when I did get into him I was in all the way. Saw “Purple Rain” something like 8 times in theaters, and that’s not including all the times I watched it again on TV, reruns, etc.

This cat is truly a once-in-a-generation genius. Guess that’s why ican sortof forgive his control freak nature. Gets on my nerves, but hey. He’s Prince.

I got into him in middle school which is more like 1998, but it was his older stuff I got into first.

I saw him do it “nothing compares to you alone” when I was very young in Australia. It was pretty grand.

What would we do without Prince? What would we be now?

It is rare to find anything decent on you tube, but there is stuff out there, stuff which hasn’t been hastily removed yet. They can’t find everything.

Yea, that’s why I took mine off Daily Motion.

Yes, Cooper is like Prince; tons of talent and originality–lol! :-)

But I’m sorry, I played “The Family” version so many times I wore a hole in it–I was as mad as Prince when Sinead made that milktoast version of it!

I’ve seen him do it alone as I wrote above. I had never heard of The Family version until last might.

I got excited when I saw the blog title, then I saw Nothing Compare to You instead of Dove’s Cry. Then I scrolled down and my song was next. I like Nothing Compares To You, but Dove’s Cry is probably my number 3 Prince song…

1. International Lover
2. Raspberry Beret
3. Dove’s Cry / Beautiful Ones
4. Darling Niki / Girls & Boys

It will change tomorrow…

The lyrics to this song is just poetic…

I’m glad I didn’t disappoint you.

I’m not sure why some comments go in the comment pooper. Usually it is only the microbiologist from Hawaii, and the artist Francis who end up in there. ;)

I get them eventually.

l saw the title to the blog post and got so excited, and then I saw the video to Nothing Compares To You, I was disappointed, but then I kept reading and scrolled to the next one, and yes When Doves Cry. This is probably my second or third favorite Prince song. International Lover being the first, of course…

AH, Prince Rogers Nelson - What a talent. Can you believe he’s 50 years old? WOW. Not only a extremely talented artist - he’s also guested and helped several artists over the years. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame 4 years ago. Much deserved. Thanks.

Too bad Sinead imploded so spectacularly. Product of her childhood, I suppose. But, man, the way her voice goes.

Prince is okay, if a bit freaky-deaky. Friends hitched me up on a date with a little red corvette senorita from down around Beaumont, TX, one time and let me tell you she could purr. 2nd thing she did - after pouring a few drinks and hot sauce into me - was take me to see Purple Rain. What a flick that was.

Somewhere during the night, we discovered we had the same birthdate. And she let out that she was married.

Took my yugo in the other direction after that.

Yanno who has a real lilting voice? Doris from the Cranberries.

Love the Cranberries but Prince is def a genius in both music and marketing.

I thought I left a comment yesterday…sorry about that!

I happened to like Sinead’s version of “Nothing Compares 2 U” and “When Doves Cry” has no words that will describe its lushness…

I remember a friend in college had The Family’s only album on cassette. Those were some good times.

Because Prince has released so much good music, my favorite songs by him could easily change from week to week.
