Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October 9th, 2008 by cooper

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Those who have read this blog awhile probably remember me posting on the large number of horrific acts of violence which occurred in this affluent area within the year of my moving back. These acts included a strangulation followed by arson, shooting, strangulation alone, and a stabbing where the women was left on the side of the road afterward by her husband. Those women died, but working for the commission on women here, and having direct relations with the public woman’s shelter and a privately run woman’s shelter, I know these are not isolated incidence.

According to (NCADV), one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. In addition, one in six women and one in 33 men have experienced an attempted or completed rape, and 1 in 12 women and 1 in 45 men will be stalked in their lifetime.

The stats are alarming. In so many cases, as with the cases above there are warning signs which are either ignored or unrecognized.

Please educate yourself on Domestic Violence.
