My First, My Last, My Old School Friday
On this Friday after the Republican Convention and in need of some relief I present Old School Friday. The weekly event sponsored by Ms Marv and Ms Grapevine.
The theme this week is Disco.
My parent’s used to groan when they heard that word.
I’m not as familiar with disco as I am with other genre’s of music.Still, I know it, you know it and I bet each and everyone of you have a favorite disco song even if you don’t admit it.
I hear disco was more about an event than the music, but despite not being as familiar with Disco as some, it wasn’t difficult to choose.
I made a couple of choices here. The first three videos count as one. ;)
Turn the Beat Around popularized by Vicki Sue Robinson in 1976 . It’s considered a Disco classic but Vicky was not considered a major artist. Laura Branigan was the first major artist to cover the song, but never officially released as a single. In 1994 the song was recorded by Gloria Estefan for the soundtrack to the film The Specialist. Released as a single, it became a hit and is also featured on Estefan’s fourth solo album Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me.
Honestly one of the best shake, wiggle, and roll your ass songs.

Top Choice. One of the best songs ever.
I dance to this while alone. A secret, and the only thing you are ever going to see
written on this blog which in anyway makes me look the the freak I truly am.
My Everything

I should get Miss Lucy over here. She’s the Disco Princess… a regular Dancing Queen. LOL
The word disco makes me groan also. The reality is certain songs “Last Dance” in particular are some of my fave’s
Disco was more about ropes opening just for you and the friends you brought–what happened in the both se- bathrooms and uh the drugs i the VIP rooms and on the floors
I groan but I had some of my best times. I wouldn’t repeat those e_periences for anything
That description, some of my best times but wouldn’t repeat those …. seems to be a great way to put the general feeling I seem to get from eeryone about Disco.
Sho’ you right.
I pretend to be Barry White sometimes when I’m driving. We even?
I kind of figured as much.
Um, by that I don’t mean deceased.
It took me all day to get this.
The bigger they are the harder their brain has to work I guess.:)
My mom use to love Barry White, and that song would get her on the dance floor in a heart beat.
Anything for a good dance.
Turn the beat around is a hit. :) I also selected Vickie Sue. It was on the radio all the time when I was a kid.
The Barry White track is a classic and I like it because he had fun with it.
I kind of like Turn the Beat Around but I’ve danced to it with a bunch of Cuban relatives before and something about that whole atmosphere makes it a worthy song.
Barry White is always scrumptious.
Who is Laura Branigan? That hair is sad.
I always dance to Barry White alone, or otherwise.
Never heard of her until yesterday.
I lived through the Disco Era - not pretty! Picture all those cheap white Travolta Saturday Night Fever suit knock offs, a jumble of cheap gold chains tangled up in hairy chests and white pleather belts and platforms. Picture red heads like me in an afro - can you say Bozo??
But there were a few cool things in the seventies and my first video was one of them - iconic, classic and I’d still give it a 10 to dance to!
My post? Disco (sucks?) - have a little laugh at Funky Town on me!
I’m glad I missed it.
Ahhh, Barry White…a true master.
I am thoroughly enjoying “Turn the Beat Around”…I think I’ll listen again, and again…
I hate to say it but me too.
Love. love, LOVE Barry!
Did I mention how much I love Barry? :-)
I both dance and sing when I’m alone. Never in public.
I didn’t know “Turn the Beat Around” was done in the 70’s. The only version I’ve ever heard was Estefan’s.
My disco education is lacking.
Great picks! This was one of my favorite themes!
I Hope they Spun some Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose fer yas*
It’s too Late to turn back now*
I believe I believe I’m fallin’ in Love*
I end up calling her at least 10 times a Day*
;))
Good Choice on Barry White - I’d love to bring this Love Unlimited to Toronto*
