My parents were arrant connoisseurs of music. Music was always being played or playing in our home.
The Old School Friday theme is “male singers”. To choose one is impossible. I use my memory for this choice.
When I was very young, prior to settling in Hobart, we lived for a time in Sydney. It was a shorter period of time and possibly my parent’s full music collection hadn’t been shipped, or maybe my father was at that in between stage of replacing all his vinyls with CD’s, because for a time this artist ruled. I heard nothing but him for months. For months on end George Benson ruled our home. It’s possible it was only weeks (I hear children think a week is a really long time), but the time spent listening to this was never a waste.
I’m totally convinced his rendition of “Broadway” subconsciously directed my college choice to NYC.
I give you.
George Benson.
You Tube freaks out after midnight, so there are some links below the tubes with some good stuff.
Broadway.
– Some Kick Ass Summertime he did with Jill Scott.

Masquerade wma — a great presentation.

Music was never a part of my household. I had to discover it on my own in high school. I think that’s where I started to shape what would become my music identity and fashion my music soul.
I really envy people who were exposed to the greats at a young age because who knows how I might have turned out had I been provided the same gift.
A singing, dancing MoJo I suppose.
His version of Stardust might be the best ever, too. My dad was a George Benson fan, too, and, like you, I’m (slightly) better for it.
There are worse reasons to pick a college. I picked Emory by putting the wrong address on all my requests for applications and having the Emory app misdelivered to the right house.
I couldn’t find a you tube version or an easy link for it , but you’re right.
Before I comment I want to say WTH@ mojo shivers. Not a music household? That would be scary for me. I grew up in a highly music environment. My mother was a singer in the choir, a band and would throw some hellacious parties. I shutter to think of the music you missed.
OK, back on topic. George Benson was rocked steadily in my home. He is a wonderful performer (singer & musician) and I’m loving your selection.
Happy OSF!!
I think he would have been writing musicals instead of stories, so it’s probably best this way.
Didn’t grow up in a musical household – though my father told people he discovered Carly Simon (long story)and went through a playing “Alice’s Restaurant” for most people who came over
They weren’t against my love for music though once when my father came over he made some pointed remark about adults not collecting CD’s – least not the musical type
I will be back tonight to listen
You just enjoy your weekend the music is always here.
First of all, I’m loving the new layout — the static home page, the header image, etc. etc.
And, I too grew up with a family who musically influenced me. Both of my parents were always playing something good. I became a Dead Head at an early age.
Thanks I’m getting it working.
I know what you mean. “four and twenty” by my father and “the end” by my mother were the lullaby’s I heard.
Damn sweet Benson is. Jill Scott rocks some too.
Choose this, choose this. I like the old header image.
I like this theme.
I haven’t had a minute to blog, but the end of the summer season is near.
OK, I choose this.
“Masquerade” was a great lunch buzz.
Benson does some great stuff with his mouth.
My father played a trombone. Does that count as having a musical family?
I like this look, the front page is very cool.
Sure, Trombone counts.
One of my jams, always makes me want to grove and get on the dance floor.
I’m glad you liked it.
Awesome pick! I would have never thought to put George in this category! Nice choice! I love “Masquerade”! Takes me back to my childhood!
Have a great weekend!
There are too many singers to choose favorites. I thought I’d go with my history.
When I lived in France, Give me the Night was in SO many commercials — including being the themesong for Ferro-Rocher chocolates. Seriously, I did multiple double-takes at how many versions of this song were still in heavy rotation in the year 2005. I miss his old nose and old jams. Fabulous choice for this week!
That does seem to be the most common song around here as well.
George Benson is a great choice…his version of Summertime with Jill Scott? Pure magic…
Wasn’t that duo performance spectacular?
Jill Scott is so good anyway, it would be hard to sing with her and not be fab yourself.
mmmmm.…love the new look Cooper…
love it and George Benson too…one of my all time favourites !!!
Masquerade 10/10
10 for sure.
Great choices!!!!
Have a Blessed Weekend.
Light and Love all the day Long.

Modern Musings’ OSF 10
Same to you Danielle.
I loved his Stardust. His best? Breezin’ — and want to hear something cool — he and Al Jarreau doing it with lyrics together!
Thanks for stopping by my desperate OSF — having to choose one favorite male singer had me in a tizzy and sent me off to a deserted island with Paul McCartney, lol. And yes I do TT too and you can still stop by and try out my little TT quiz — I’ll post the answers on Sunday!
Happy Weekend
In the land of so many it is hard to choose a favorite.
Oh yeah! Great picks. I love George Benson! Finally got mine up today. Could miss posting Frankie cause I do love that man!
That was great stuff sjp. I love doing the friday thing.
Oddly enough, I’ve never even heard the name George Benson. Please don’t kill me (Or berate me with incredibly degrading insults, in the form of non-verbal text)… Thanks!
I really do know good music, I promise. Like right now I’m listening to Wincing the Night Away by the Shins (on vinyl actually).
And yes, it has been a really long time.
I love The Shins, but there is so much more.
Your title reminded me that it’s been awhile since I’ve listened to Patti Smith. Yeah, I got the song title wrong but Because The Night” is pretty close.
Cool tune, too.
Last time I had a root canal the dentist had George Benson playing. Haven’t been able to listen to him since.
That sounds like a rather unpleasant memory. lol
I missed it I was going to do it this week. I’m not up on Benson He is more Jazzy than my usual, but Summertime with Jill Scott, that was amazing.
Indeed it was quite sweet.Glad you enjoyed it.
