It’s Old School Friday and I Want You
The theme is “Rock Songs”.
I’ve heard that in the boogie woogie and jazz song era of the 1920’s and 1930’s “Rock and Roll” was a euphemism for vigorous sex. From that time forward Rock and Roll history is well documented. There is no need to cloud up a perfectly succinct post with it. Rock and Roll eventually became “Rock”.
Rock Music. An ambiguous term leading one to a massive catalog of music from R&B, Alternative, Punk, and Folk, to Southern and Acid Rock .
Using the most ambiguous understanding of Rock, I will clarify:
Thunderstorms are Rock and Roll. Spring showers are not.
Swedish Showers are Rock and Roll. Bathtubs are not.
Little Red Corvette’s are Rock and Roll. A Volvo Station Wagon is not.
Roasted Pineapple & Habanero Dip is Rock and Roll. French Onion Dip is not.
A difficult decision, with thousands of songs to choose from. Don’t worry you won’t smell any teen spirit here, no throwing bricks into walls either, though I will admit to being on a bit of a crazy train, searching for a car to settle into with my white rabbit. ( Gratuitous, yes, but it hasn’t been that long since most of you called me Alice)
Even though no matter what I always give it up for my best girlfriend Lola, and keep hoping we won’t be fooled again, because I find all that killing in the name of so distressing, I am not choosing any of those songs as the “headliner” this week.
Before my choice is revealed, and in the spirit of the aforementioned euphemism (in reality more like a commercial announcement and way to squeeze another hundred songs in), I should tell you that if you start me up I’ll shake you all night long, Barracuda that I am. So call me, and take a little piece of my heart, because I am the only one, for sure.
With that I present ( this version skips the melodic prelude which often accompanies this tune), the stalker-ish, rather morose — yet sickly sexy — anthem of the psychotic boyfriend. I Want You
Elvis Costello - I Want You.

So, I went a little crazy.
Enjoy the concert.

Hmmm…. I always though Jimmy Fallon’s “Idiot Boyfriend” was a better example of totally making a fool out of yourself in pursuit of a woman…
Eh, cherchez la femme.

I sometimes enjoy dark and sick.
Nice. I’m feeling the guitar on track #2. I didn’t listen to much from Costello, but good music nonetheless.
My parents had a lot of Costello.A lot of everything really which is why I’m pretty familiar with him.
Great concert and intro to Lola—I said to myself “wait a sec, this is Cooper who never mentions friends–well that piano man :) and would never use names–even fake ‘could it be?’” Yes it was
One of the many things I love about you is your love of rock. The girls in my life who haven’t reached your age or wise state yet love real rock so I know there’s hope for them
I thank my parents for that really even my grandmother always a lot of music around, all genre’s and a few musician types. When your only lullaby’s were Crosby Stills and Nash ,and The Beatles, your path is set.
I wasn’t a big Costello fan, but I definitely am digging pick #1. I also love how you put links to other great rock songs in your post. Happy OSF!
Heredity made me a fan. I am rather fond of this song, but I like most of his stuff.
HaHa! Happy OSF! Thanks for the mini concert! Great choices!
Have a great weekend!
Didn’t know the euphemism thing.
Too many songs, so little time.
Elvis sounds sick enough, but apple sounds insane in that song.
That Joplin video is great. Nice choices, great essay, cool concert.
I did one.
Is that Osborne’s wife on drums in Crazy Train?
Yeah I hadn’t seen that Joplin vid before it;s great as is the Etheridge one.Fiona does look a little crazy in that video doesn’t she. Love it.
No,it’s a guy.
I see you as less of a barracuda and more of a … a … bird? I’d sing a verse or two but the tweener has that Nellie Furtado disc somewhere up in her pigpen.
Doing an Elvis Costello cover is like committing blaspheme.
Oh I do so hope it’s a Raven you see me as dear sk. To be anything but a Raven would just plain suck.
happy OSF! That’s one way of getting all of your song choices in! Never much into Elvis Costello, but I might have to check him out a little more now. Good picks.
I so enjoyed the mini concert…and the fun way you did it!
Great choice with the Elvis Costello…I don’t listen to him a lot…I think I’ve missed out…
Have a great weekend!
Mini concerts are good right before the weekend.
A good concert. I forget Ozzy was young once, and a real rock star - good song.
I like the Elvis pick.
