We Are Family

August 5th, 2008 by cooper

My notorious — for reasons unnamed and before my time — 91 year old great aunt hasn’t been out of her home overlooking the Hudson River in years. She will is arrive here for an overnight stay tomorrow, a rest-stop while she waits for other family to take her visit her sister — another great aunt of mine — in North Carolina. Due to health concerns on both sides it could be the last time the two sisters will see each other. A sad but necessary trip.

I am but the second stop of four. My great aunt doesn’t fly. Her journeys are in minuscule increments, solely by automobile. The family is more than willing to facilitate this venture, whatever it entails. Choosing stops with easy highway access got me pulled from the list for this one. Yes, my family is large and spread around the world, you can bet there are lists. A spreadsheet now I think.

I hear she doesn’t remember things as well as she used to, and hasn’t been well. My cousin is staying here as well, so I’m not going not be alone with her. She’s a funny women, she’s lived alone in her Hudson River abode since the death of her husband many years ago, she has a couple of children who visit her regularly and the cousin who is bringing her here is her grandchild, another grandchild will be picking her up and driving her to Virginia. Tomorrow evening will be interesting. I have brought work home this afternoon, so I can start the clean up this joint. I am making sure there is not a lot of junk hanging around to confuse her.

On my way home I returned two National Geographic magazines to my doctors office. I wanted to abandon the persistent feeling of if not guilt uneasiness I’ve felt ever since I inadvertently left the last two issues in my shoulder bag on the way out. Persia: Ancient Soul of Iran and The Virunga Gorillas were of interest to me, but I didn’t steal them. I honestly forgot they were in my bag which is where I put them when I left the waiting room to embark on the obligatory thirty minute wait in the doctors actual office.

The good news is they found some gorillas, now my suggestion is leave them alone. Ebola is there for a reason, the curse placed upon those who mess with the gorilla’s. Maybe, possibly, not likely but worth considering?

What a great body guard he’d make though.
He reminds me of my brother.

Peace

Will look forward to hearing about your great aunt and her visit. Ninety-one years is quite an accomplishment. Our family is relatively young by comparison, and most likely, no where as interesting as yours sounds. Of course, maybe a better word for mine is notorious. I’m too challenged for a gorilla segue at this point in the day…He is a hunk, tho…

    Good luck with that.

I’ve “inadvertently” taken magazines before, never returned them though.
I see a little resemblance, its been awhile but maybe it’s the hind end reminds me of Josh.

See? You return magazines that weren’t yours, Miss Cooper. Meanwhile, I give the guy at Wendy’s a five the other night for my food and he gives me seventeen dollars in change. I’m such a stinker.

Here I thought I was one of the last.

If you’re over 80 you’re notorious by default.

I’ve taken magazines. It happens. Bringing them back, no.

Have fun with great granny aunt.

My brother too, must be something about brothers.,

usually the magazines suck and are fifteen years old or so but these were good enough to want to read so what can I say.

It was fun. She goes to bed at 9 though. ;)

My oldest relative in 98, he gets around well. Have fun.
Better notorious family than boring family.

was at the eye doctor’s today and picked up a NG with an article on Iran. perhaps even the same edition. but I left it there. too many magazines at my house anyways. I spent most of my time at the back of the edition reading about asteroids and some island off western africa (bioka?).

my great aunt is almost 87 and sharp as a whip. doesn’t get around too well but has her youngest sister as the housemate. they both visit quite often.

guy out back is in his mid-70’s. his mother visits once or twice a month. the dog knows what her cane is for and doesn’t yip too much when she’s within reach.

guess you should never underestimate the elderly.

I have too many magazines too, so I wasn’t heartbroken to take them back. I couldn’t toss them of course, that would have been almost blasphemy.
