Old School Friday

No stress weekend fun again with Old School Friday.

This week it’s Break Up Songs. Songs to break up to, songs to listen to after a break up with a smile on your face, or listen to as you wallow in self pity. There is no dearth of break-up songs whichever view you want to take.

Dylan seems to have a run on break-up songs, though I’m not featuring my long time favorite (It Ain’t Me Babe), or my second favorite Dionne Warwick’s “Walk on By” this time around.

I heart Sum 41 always, more so for having contributed to the the first Rock Against Bush album with their song Moron, so their Pieces is on my “favorite but not featured” list. A simple little ballad. A decent “no drama” break-up song.

On my break-up song search I discovered Linda Ronstadt was the queen of break-up songs, with
You’re No Good and A Long Long Time topping my list. Not Much for drama or despair A Long Long Time even depresses me. It’s awesome though.

I choose Kiss Off by the Violent Femmes as my featured song. Never covered as well as the original this song survived my parents wedding, a fact I have video to substantiate, made rounds when I was in high school via covers and the original, and is not so much a break up song as an “Eff off” song sung loudly after a break ups when everything in your world just seems to suck.

So, dear John, walk on bye, because you’re no good and haven’t been for a long long time, and if you’re looking for someone to pick up the pieces  —  it ain’t me babe , so kiss off.

or a great live version from 1983

Enjoy the concert and feel free to join in.

  • Oddly enough my “song” with my guy is all about breaking up.After the Rain by, Blue Radio…weird but it works for us 18 1/2 years strong.

    • Beak up songs are some of the best out there, so whatever works.I’m not familiar with that song I’ll have to check it out.

  • I like Erykah Badu’s “Call Tyrone”

You’ll like this one, slight freak factor,Tom Petty, “Don’t Come Around Here”, “Alice in Wonderland” theme.

Kiss Off — good choice, the others are decent too.

There are thousands of break-up songs. Guess that says something about life.

  • Love how you pulled that all together. I “broke up” with a little bit of funk on this OSF.

    • Yours was quite smooth.

I’m one of those meme /tag purists, if I can’t do something with ti I usually don’t do them. lol

  • Awesome! You do this very well…

  • Oh, yeah. The Violent Femmes are one of the classical bands of antiquity. When I was in Indiana over Independence Day weekend, my 11-year-old nephew was playing them. My favorite break-up songs are of the sorry you’re dead subset including St. James Infirmary, Hang Your Head, Tom Dooley and Kern River. This is not because I murder my girlfriends, necessarily,

  • I am a fan of Violent Femmes, I grew up during the grunge era and Seattle days of Kurt Cobain, and before grunge we listened to classics like Violent Femmes and REM. A lot of the 90’s movie played these bands.

    • I’m a fan of seattle grunge, at the end of middle school we thought we were so cool we used to order vinyls from seattle off of sites of insignificant garage bands, and thought we were so cool.

  • “The Last Goodbye” — Jeff Buckley

    or “So Sick” Ne-Yo

There are so many I could play them for weeks on end and never run out.

  • Don’t really have a breakup song…I guess you have to have a “break into” song like break into a relationship.

    Maybe David Gray’s Babylon.

    Saturday I’m running wild
And all the lights are changing red to green
Moving through the crowd I’m pushing
chemicals all rushing in my bloodstream…

    Have a nice Saturday!

Friday post was sloppy, but it does have vulgarity going for it. SO that’s a plus.

  • I love that song … the entire album actually. I only got to see the Femmes much later, when they were on the down-slide. Still cool. I generally like the angrier break-up songs too.

    • I saw them last summer in Baltimore and they were actually pretty good. Unless I was drunk which isn’t likely.

  • LOL!! I never heard the Kiss Off! Great song and great pick!

  • Okay Cooper, now you’ve got me singing “You’re No Good” and “Walk On By” incessantly!! Love the way you put it together.

    • I listen to Dionne Warwick’s greatest hits cd in my car all the time, I am the queen of Walk on Bye at this point.
I may have to hit up some Ronstadt just for all those damn depressing songs she seems to sing so well.

  • The Violent Femmes — may they serve us forever.

Separate Ways — Journey come to mind. There are a lot of heart wrenching type songs out there. I like more upbeat screw you songs, They better for the health.

Music in any form is good post break up.

  • Some great songs. I didn’t really remember that song until just now, the violent femmes that is.

Did you get a load of how short Linda Ronstadt’s little baby doll dress was? I forget at one time they wore skirts shorter than we ever thought of wearing.
