Let’s Harness the Owners
Let’s do this.
Let us harness the owners of these young horses, and run their fat asses around the track (until they break their ankles and we have to shoot them for mercy’s sake) while their horse/owners sit in the stands neighing with glee over the money they will make on the humans who manage to make it out alive.

Filly Eight Belles breaks down after 2nd-place Derby finish

Love this!
Kinda like these people don’t understand that one day they will all go all Planet of the Apes on us and the tables will be turned.
That will be the justice.
It will be for sure.
I did NOT want to read this… It makes me so sad - and mad. Such an abuse of a living creature. *arrrrgh*
It was sad to read. I’m not that familiar with horse racing but I’ve read that they run these horse too young, too fast, and too far, and she was one of the young ones.
I know a horse that likes grasshopper cookies which is almost like sipping mint julep.
Almost.
I have to give it to her, she came in second, and fillies don’t usually do well in these races. May she rest in peace, and cause nightmares to her owners for the rest of their lives.
Horse races are so like the human race, no one ever wins in the true sense of a win. Blech.
Hello coop! ;)
Damn it TZ, I’m so excited to see you my hands are shaking as I type.;)
One of my original people is back.
repeat after me…
There’s no place like home….
No one wins the human race??????
Phew, so I can stop worrying about coming in last?
The news story you linked to reads like sick satire. Real life should never read like sick satire.
Of course it shouldn’t, but often I’m afraid it is.
That was awful, and they are running more and more footage of this as time passes.
She was just a baby.
Well, I had the courage to take on another blogger who posted not one but 3 videos of her death on his blog and then posted to the Blog Catalog forum telling us the videos made him cry, although he commenced his post with this statement.
“There’s not any commentary from me on this post. I’m just letting these tribute videos to the filly Eight Belles (euthanized yesterday after fighting hard for 2nd in the Kentucky Derby) speak for themselves.”
You can witness the dialog between us here. http://www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/tear-jerker
BTW he now has 18 blog comments.
I didn’t see the vids I could not watch, the written explanation was quite enough.
The trainers were surprised when Barbaro went down with significant leg injuries. Now they are surprised again.
How surprising can it be when thru dna manipulation, breading, and drugs, the horse end up with bigger and stronger muscles but the underlying structure, i.e., bone and connective tissue, remain unchanged? The bones simply cannot handle the stress put on them by muscles which the great designer did not make so super-charged.
The owners ought to be kicked in the whatevers. It’s animal abuse and I will not watch it in person or on television. I have my limits and some standards.
I haven’t watched the video’s either and I know the media is loving it and probably playing them over and over.
I have gone to The Preakness quite a number of times. This giveS me second thoughts.
As it should.
This was sad. I am reading an op-ed in the post which explains the stats and reasons for these kind of break downs, and it really makes ya think.
I read something similar yesterday. I was unfamiliar with most of what goes on in the industry.
You have to know this makes me sick. I prefer animals to people much of the time. I love the pretense of shock from the owners and trainers. Like they didn’t know the hazards of their practice.
It is kind of hard to swallow isn’t it?
I did not watch the race, and for that, I am glad. I heard about it on the radio - and both my wife and I cried, got pissed, and then, when we calmed down - wondered how in the world this could ever have happened - two ankles at once? My wife grew up around horses - farm animals - and said that something was rather fishy.
Fishy.
It positively reeks.
I didn’t watch it, only saw one part on the news and couldn’t stand it.
After I started reading a little more about it it sounds like the industry does some horrible things to horses for the almighty dollar.
Hands shaking? Yowza, nice. Shake it sister and rock forth thy word. Your doing a super job.
