Oh very young, What Will You Leave Us This Time

A few pre-pontification notes.

Let’s wish Pia good luck with the first leg of her move from NYC to South Carolina.

The first Blog Carnival out of the twenty something bloggers is hosted here at Sequins and Glitter

Check it out. If you are a twenty something blogger, or just play one in the land of blogs, consider joining. The carnival has some really good reads, please check it out.

Tonight, as I told you, I’m sitting around with friends watching the election returns. Now, so that I don’t get into it with Doug or OC this evening I’m not going to opine at this time. Probably because I have been swayed to the idol dark side by G who some of you might have seen here, and Kelly, whom I adore.

Also swayed by the fact that sometimes one just has to get out of themselves, as has been suggested to me often.

Now back in the day, May 26th 2006 as a matter of fact, I wrote a scathing.…post on American Idol.
OK, not exactly scathing and the only reason I wrote it is because I had followed a trackback to my site, but still.

The people here this evening are mostly grad students, or recent college grads without significant employment making skateboards in their basement types. They are feeling the pressure of the sure recession, are sitting on bills they will never be able to pay, know their children may not be able to breath the air, swim or drink the water even as it washes over them, frigid, smothering, from the melting ice caps. They vote and care, but sometimes getting away from it all is the solution.

The vote is in.….….

We will be flicking from American Idol to the Election returns while eating banana bread, sushi and pizza.

What can I say, that little kid with the big voice deserves to win, and I’m seriously just observing it as a sociological phenomena.

Besides, no matter how hard I try, I can’t answer this question.

It all remains to be seen.

Peace

  • No fear of getting it into with me over American Idol.

  • Cat Stevens has always given me goose bumps. *sigh* Thanks for the inspiration as I head downstairs to do the very same thing as you (observation), Cooper (should I employ the Picture-in-Picture feature?) except we will be dining on Crab & Andouille Jambalaya. So many recipes — so little time.

And the feelings are quite mutual, Cooper. I’m blushin’ ovah heah.

  • Dam the Colorado, Cooper, Yusuf Islam (as Cat Stevens) was an icon when I was a twentysomething blogger. Except that we didn’t have blogs. Penpals, maybe.

I was solemnly assured by my collegiate acquaintances that Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat were the best things in the world to smoke dope by.

Since as a twentysomething, I was already Doug’s curmudgeonly understudy, I took great pleasure in stepping up to the turntables on my weekly campus radio show (yes, that means I was a DJ, once upon a time and not for very long) and playing “Its a Supa (Dupa) Life”, a fast-paced single from Stevens’s teenybopper days in England. 180 degrees removed from all the music that made him famous. In the US, anyway.

We couldn’t answer the question either. Time answered it for us. An old general was once asked, if he could receive one boon from the Almighty, what would it be? His answer: “Mercy”.

  • Thanks for stopping by my blog, cooper. I really appreciate that. :)

  • Can I admit that I love Cat Stevens? Just LOVE him!!!

  • Thanks on this night of political promise and hope for a new America for lifting us up with Cat Stevens an inspiration to many of my generation.

He is an alive antidote for John MCain winning the enough delegates to be the party nominee. His talking is going on now and I came to see what could keep me feeling alive and I found you blog. If McCain was any more flat in his speech I would have gone to sleep but I push myself up from the numbing TV and came to explore on the internet.

Keep up all the good stuff you got going on here.

  • Best wishes to Pia, too, darn me. The Senator is giving a fine speech right now. Please stay away from NAFTA.

  • Doug: I would be shocked with any other answer; and yes you were a little slow on the take there.

kelly: Naw, it was a washout anyway — the election.
I did however reacquaint myself with that lovely Cohen song and we have been sitting here all night listening to the various covers of “Hallelujah”, arguing over which is preferable — even a few people singing and strumming it , though I’m weary of it all now, I can at least thank idol for that — I think that song deserves a post.

amoeba:Do tell. If you couldn’t answer it my hopes are slim. Won’t prevent me from trying.

    Deutlich: You’re quite welcome.

MarvalusOne: And indeed he is the best thing to come out of this night except Vermont and
    “Hallelujah”.

Joseph: When that man speaks I crinkle inside.

  • Spent the evening watching the returns with a grouping of Obama supporters over beers. If I were the crying type, there may have been a tear or two mixed in with the brew. Hard to watch a double digit loss in a state we had canvassed, but I guess the Cincy votes did come in for us, and that’s where we were. The Cat Stevens clip helps a bit … thanks.

  • Is anybody really ready for what’s next for the country? I mean – whatever happens, it’s going to be a change. There’s always going to be people who fear being swept aside by change.

I sometimes wonder which side of the line I fall on.

  • well it sounds like the food was a treat Cooper.….
the first time I heard Hallelujah was when I saw a young dancer friend perform a contemporary piece to it …absolute magic :)

  • “They are feeling the pressure of the sure recession, are sitting on bills they will never be able to pay, know their children may not be able to breath the air, swim or drink the water even as it washes over them, frigid, smothering, from the melting ice caps.”

I loved this line but have this picture in my head of my son sitting around eating an ice cream cone, minding his own business, as this large wave washes over him.

It will be a disturbing few months for the Democratic party, that’s for sure.

  • Cool song, never paid much attention to it but it’s touching.

The election coverage will never end now. Hilary will not get elected if she wins, McCain will win, and I will cry and move to Canada.

Canada is cold, where else can I move? I don’t speak Spanish and don’t feel like learning — maybe I’ll just go to the islands.

  • I’m ready for a change. Bigtime! I like both Dems, but fall with my demographic (survived my twenties by a longshot). Just hope the Dems don’t get too ugleee with each other.

  • Francis: I’m glad you are not the crying type.

mojo: I look at what is and if scares me to think what could be is less scary would be naive.

laketrees: I do love that song and enjoyed being reminded of it.

jacob: Disturbing is s good word. Protect your son jacob, protect your son. How old is he now ? 4 or so?

casey: maybe get a dual Canada and somewhere else.

    Bloodmother: It will get ugly.

  • I like Cat Stevens too! Honestly haven’t thought of him since the seventies — his music isn’t heard so often in Germany.

Think of me on Saturday — will be in flight, on the way to my home town ( sounds so much nicer than homeland).

  • Pia moved from construction zone to construction zone. However I don’t own this one – I’m using my blog as a “today I ate…” because sometimes a blog is good for that

It’s more than disturbing. I know so many people who were alienated and finally felt that they were part of something bigger and better than them. I want them to continue feeling that way.

I’m not just talking about teens and early 20somethings but their parents. Obama has made them believe and they have begun to be involved in the larger community and I hate sounding preachy but it was a boomerang affect that I would love to see continued.

I won’t vote for a Republican and don’t know if I can vote for Hillary but…I don’t want to feel that I pulled a Nader

Cat Stevens brings me back to a time in life when I was exactly your age, I had friends who only listened to him

  • ha ha

Indie on his way to the “homeland”. Sounds so “Polish Film”.

I will be thinking of you — safe flight.

Pia: Funny I just wrote that above.

I hope things are going well your first day there.

We did do all the decorating after all.
