Happy February 29th.

February 29th, 2008 by cooper

This is the first February 29th for this blog. I began at blogger in November of 2004, missing the leap by many months. If this is to be one of many leap year posts, or the sole leap year post for “wonderland or not”, I can’t say, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Historical documentation, and all that.

I’m on break. I will be working, but I am off official academic instruction for the week. I will be sitting around in this very apartment with a few friends on Tuesday watching the election returns. There will probably be beer involved. Just thought I would give you fair warning.

A quickie, because if I don’t get it up it won’t be a February 29th post.

Politics:

The only thing I really want to know, beside when this very expensive war is going to end, is when is the price of asparagus, tomatoes and lettuce going down? How about gas? I drive forty-five minutes to school, four days a week, in a gas efficient vehicle, and the gas prices are killing me?

Besides how can I ride around in my hypothetical convertible, with the top down showing off my perfectly toned arms and nice teeth, when all I can afford to eat is high fructose corn syrup based products which will soon rot my teeth, and add some serious fat cells to my arms, not to mention my ass.

Women’s Voices: Women Vote: A web site with “one goal in mind: Improving unmarried women’s participation in the electorate and policy process”, is celebrating “Womens History Month” with a Female Blogger Contest to honor women who have utilized the internet to amplify their voices.

I received an email today telling me I had been nominated. If you know a female blogger who is using her voice in regard to politics, policy, society, using her voice to discuss something besides her, perfect no matter what size, ass, (which I honestly only do when I have nothing else to write about), you can nominate her via clicking the graphic of the very joyful looking woman on my sidebar for the weekend.

Go see who the “Famer” of the week is this week. You will certainly agree on the choice I’m certain.

Peace

Upon hearing the projection that petrol / gasoline prices are targeted to hit US$4 a gallon, at least here in Hawai‘i by April (which is about what they were in Australia in 1985), I revisited Professor Bartlett. He would not give you much joy, either for the price of petrol or for the price of veggies (which are dependent on the price of petrol for both the fertilizer to grow them and the trucks to transport them).

I wish I could walk or bike to work. But my 40-mile commute’s an hour on a perfect day (more than 2 hours on a standard day). And yet gas would have to top $10 a gallon before it would make economic sense (if anything does on this rockpile) to move closer to the University. If and only if housing prices stayed level, which they won’t.

We the People will have to think fast and move quickly, or toning our behinds will be the least of our worries.

I don’t visit Indie a tenth, nay a hundredth, as often as I should.

Yea, I can’t walk The Beltway” either. Just not possible.
Walking forty five miles would tone things though.

  3. IkeNo Gravatar says:

Sadly, those prices will not come down soon.

The price of all farm products is going up, because the demand for corn-based ethanol is driving more cropland to “maize.” While well-intentioned, it is not cleaner, it is not more cost effective, and it doesn’t get near the same mpg. In effect, the unintended consequences of the Great Corn Rush are more subsidies, more Midwestern vote-buying, and what amounts to an energy tax on the poor in the form of higher food bills.

I read today an Economist figgers Bush’s Illegal Iraq War will Cost Americans $3 to $5 TRILLION Dollars* I’m surprized Americans haven’t Marched on the Whitehouse + Yanked Bush + Grampa Cheney’s Sorry Asses outta there yet!!

    Barack Obama all the Way!!

    Peace*

    U got my Vote Coop*

That would have made it my first Feb 29th post too, even though I started in 2004 as well. The only thing is I slipped thirty minutes past midnight and missed it.

Eh, what can you do? I’ll probably be around for 2012 anyway.

  6. JacobNo Gravatar says:

I just read this -“The government said yesterday that Americans spent more in January, not because they bought significantly more goods and services, but because they paid more for what they did purchase.” in The Washington Post” Was going to post it at my blog but wordpress is undergoing maintenance .
The priciness of everything, the pollution, the planet, the war, everything.

I wonder what things will be like next February 29th?

Cool contest, and you would be in that category. Is there a site like that for men?

  7. cooperNo Gravatar says:

Ike: Yes it is sad. It takes a lot of work to repair the economiv woes we will be facing, so far this governement of ours is slow to get at it. This was nothing but predictable.

Billy Warhol: Some people still believe what he says and face it we are a fairly lazy bunch. Marching does very little good, what works is the vote — starting at the local level.

mojo: ” what can you do”

.…..change the date on your post. ;)

Jacob: I am fearful things will be quite a mess.

toodles for now, I’m off to run for a couple of hours — it is meteorological spring after all.

  8. ChrisNo Gravatar says:

Like Bush, I wasn’t aware of high gas prices ;) He’s such the worst president ever. The thing of it is, he’s never had to pay for an ounce of gas his whole life. He doesn’t even comprehend the world real people have to live in. To him, and his cronies, gas is a commodity they own and make millions from. To me, and 99% of the people I associate with, gas is something that we now have to budget. Going without gas is impossible, instead I’ve cut back on other things. Like beer, or going out to eat, or even going to all the sporting events I used to go to.

But our Grand Leader knows nothing about budgets– especially judging from the economic situation of our country– and knows nothing about going without. He’s such a tool.

I read your blog almost every day. I just cut back on my commenting. Keep it up girl.

  9. In my experience, beer isn’t stiff enough for stomach election returns! :) Enjoy your break.

  10. Hey where’s my beer :) Enjoy your much deserved break Gal! Also, Thanks for the info on ‘Women’s Voices: Women Vote’ You earned the nomination cause you have a voice that can’t help but to be heard, even here in SC :)

A Cooper voice with a purpose that gets responses and a few eyebrows rising! Watch out White House, here comes another Hillary Clinton :)

  11. I was just wondering the same things yesterday… why is everything going up EXCEPT my paycheck?!

Enjoy spring break! My daughter is HOME for break this year. I said, “Oh, how nice! You can help me spring clean then!” Yeah, right. SHE LAUGHED!

  12. DougNo Gravatar says:

Do they let men vote? Aren’t they worried women will pick the wrong nominee?

  13. GNo Gravatar says:

Which is why my parents can’t wait until I leave in a couple weeks, they can’t afford to feed me all that expensive lettuce, green peppers and anything else which might be considered healthy. If I’m still here, and I plan to be until the 10th or so, I hope to be drinking beer with you. I’ll bring my own.

You belong on the voices thing, for sure.

  14. coyotemikeNo Gravatar says:

You have to wonder if there is some cahootenizing going on between those who make the high-fructose corn syrup based foods and the diabetes drug companies.

I can’t wait for warmer weather. When it gets a touch warmer I’ll be able to go for a week at a time without driving my car.

  15. johnNo Gravatar says:

Sorry I missed the leap year celebration. Happy belated February 29th.

Red Peppers are four dollars a pound or more. That sucks.
So, what about improving unmarried men’s political participation? I see more females my age involved in the process than males.

  16. cooperNo Gravatar says:

Chris: Commenting is hard when busy, for me commenting on the web is like a cigarette break.

I just want to be sure not to exchange one tool for another.

Two Write Hands” You may be right, especially when the crowd is diverse.…yet it is a work week for most of them.

poetress: No Hilary Clinton here, for starters if my significant other allowed some poor pathetic powerless intern suck on his dick he wouldn’t be my significant other…that is just for starters.

Kim: Enjoy the time with your daughter.

Doug: Good questions for those who think so poorly of their fellow citizens.

G: You drink gross beer, please bring your own.

coyote: The guy above you have JD and was told something really strange by his doctor once about collusion of drug companies and the government. I can’t remember I should ask him again.

John: I never buy red peppers this time of year here, though I hope to grow more of them this year just due to the cost.

  17. caseyNo Gravatar says:

I never eat lettuce, but those grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches are getting harder to afford.

It’s true the worse the food item is for me the cheaper it is.

I know very few female bloggers who blog about the things you do, and you are funnier, so you are it in my small circle.

I’ve yet to put the I support Obama widget up in my blog because I fear a disaster, I would fear that with any candidate, not just Obama.

  18. Jason P.No Gravatar says:

RBOB Gas — the raw input price — is at 2.72 today. Add some Federal & State Taxes of 50 – 60 cents, plus some profit and you’ll get around 3.50 – 3.60 for 87 octane coming to gas pump near you…4.00, before you’ll gain a pound, I’m afraid. ;)

Plenty of opportunities for pass-through price inflation.

Peeve of Today: The Hammond Times decided it was ‘more efficient’ to double load their hauler to the routing station for distribution of their paper. As a result, carriers have to wait around for them to unload the two sections we put together (actually 3 news sections per section, but you never see that) and wait for them to ration out the papers.

Before, I could get out in 5 minutes — as the 1st insert was all ready there — or wrap the papers at the dis. center. Last night, it took 25 minutes for our idiot manager to ‘do the math’ in putting these sections on a cart. This is due to some issue they had in not having enough papers…but in reality, they are worried about pennies when real dollars exist. More importantly, when the presses break down (which they have at least 15 times in 3 years) we will see enormous delays — and frustration will be passed on to you, the literate customer. And they complain about us not getting done on time always.

They want to piss off their 600+ carriers in hopes they will quit, hire back some cheaper labor, and/or pass through their costs to us…asinine way to run an operation.

    Rant over.

  19. mojo shiversNo Gravatar says:

Change the date on my post? That would be cheating. LOL

  20. cooperNo Gravatar says:

CASEY: You should definitely eat lettuce, when the price goes down that is. Disaster may strike regardless, and there are tons of women posting much better and more often than I — look harder.

Jason: I always look at things to see how they are done and more often than not there are ways which would maker it simpler, cheaper and more efficient — I always go away wondering why things are so complicated and costly.

mojo: Oh, so you are above cheating now? I missed that memo.

  21. Hahaha…

US gas prices make me laugh. Try living in the UK…

I think at current exchange rates it’s close to $10 a gallon, about $2 per litre.

I spent close to $80 filling up the tank in a little fiat last week! I’m glad it was a hire car and that I don’t have a car to waste my money on every day!

  22. Jason P.No Gravatar says:

At one time, that was my job…the efficient, simpler and effective way. But we don’t need those people. We need more commerce-biased, safety-regulations-be-damned, I-gotta-have-my-Hummer-for-getting-hummers-sake people running America or The World.

    Bah!

I am just not in a good place when it come to the power structure, “that shuffles the cards.”

Doing something about it — a cause you are heading towards — is possibly the only solace. (My days of that are over…)

Another rant done. (Getting to be a problem.)
