Anyone Who Had a Heart

As promised, though some of you listed your song early, in the comments of previous posts, I asking you to tell me your favorite song with “Heart” in the title. The only requirement is that it has the word “heart” in the title. At some point I will compose a list of songs and the links to the people and their favorite “heart” songs, calling it “Hearts in the Blogesphere” or something equally ridiculous.

A little late as I was without electricity yesterday because they shut off some grids to fix the massive power outages, from ice, in the county. I hope to be back online tonight.

My contribution to fun, links and Valentine’s Day.

I’m going with Anyone Who Had a Heart a much covered song written originally for Dionne Warwick by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. This song has been covered extensively most recently a not bad version by Atomic Kittens.

I think Dionne Warwick’s version is the classic, though Luther does a kick ass version as well.

Happy Valentine’s Day

I like “Mein Herz sehnt sich nach Liebe” by Rosita Serrano. It sounds so stunning on 78 grammophone, especially if you understand the German. It’s the kind of song and delivery, you just have to stop and listen in stunned silence until it’s over.
This is not that title, but another one by her, which is almost as haunting: http://youtube.com/watch?v=0wjSV9lCu0U

I really can’t think of any modern songs with “Heart” that I think are essential.I’m sure I’m forgetting a lot of them.

P.s. I posted two stories in the last days - stop by if you havent already! A Valentine hug for you.

First of all, you be changing layouts every few months, don’t you?

So I had to think about this for a second. Mine would “Heart Is A House For Love”.

The funny thing is it’s by a made a group for a movie, The Five Heartbeats: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdHAwgRkk8M&feature=related

Well, actually the Dells performed it.

Then I’d have to go with Where Do Broken Hearts Go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yvsU4SNWPA

Is embedded in my head from my childhood; Whitney Houston was all over the place back then; ya know, before the crack.

It’s funny how I come up blank when asked. I know if I hadn’t been asked I’d know fifty right off the top of my head.

I’ll go old skool with “The Heart of Rock and Roll” Huey Lewis and The News. I was pretty young when this song was around, but it’s a good non love song with heart in the title.

My Brain’s the cliff and my heart’s the bitter buffalo

Although Cracklin Moth’s “My heart is leaking” is quickly approaching it.

Dangit… almost had to bring out the old Frank Zappa collection (yeah, I know… there’s no such thing as a new Frank Zappa collection) but… remembered one not already listed by Morgan:

Steely Dan: Turn That Hearbeat Over Again.

But right now I am listening to Tanya Donelly’s Judas My Heart… after which I might listen to Full Moon, Empty Heart.

Can I get a witness when you do this to my heart again;
Can I get a witness when you Judas my heart again;
Where I live there’s a lady who walks everywhere on her hands just like me doesn’t trust where her feet want to take her again;
Feet want to take her again;
And her feet want to take her again;
She loves me;
yeah yeah yeah.

Or, for a reeeeeel change of pace: John Lee Hooker’s Hard Hearted Woman.

Okay, that’s enough.

Tom Waits– (Looking for) The Heart of Saturday Night
Tell me is the crack of the poolballs, neon buzzin?
Telephone’s ringin’; it’s your second cousin
Is it the barmaid that’s smilin’ from the corner of her eye?
Magic of the melancholy tear in your eye.

Makes it kind of quiver down in the core
’cause you’re dreamin’ of them saturdays that came before
And now you’re stumblin’
You’re stumblin’ onto the heart of saturday night

Well you gassed her up
And you’re behind the wheel
With your arm around your sweet one
In your oldsmobile
Barrellin’ down the boulevard,
You’re lookin’ for the heart of saturday night

Is the crack of the poolballs, neon buzzin?
Telephone’s ringin’; it’s your second cousin
And the barmaid is smilin’ from the corner of her eye
Magic of the melancholy tear in your eye.

Makes it kind of special down in the core
And you’re dreamin’ of them saturdays that came before
It’s found you stumblin’
Stumblin’ onto the heart of saturday night
And you’re stumblin’
Stumblin onto the heart of saturday night

Why do I love this? When I was a kid my parents went out every Saturday night. It seemed so romantic–basically because they dressed elegantly and went out a couple nights a week without the other–classes, cards, meetings.

On Saturday night I stayed up late and listened to “golden oldies”-pre Beatles rock & roll–and watched older movies about older teenagers

“…Heart of Saturday Night” seems to sum up my feelings about the real America I wasn’t part of.

I love the words and the word play.

How Saturday night turned into the stay at home, don’t go out because NY was B&T night–bridge and tunnel–what people who lived in the boroughs were called before Brooklyn became cooler than Manhattan

How I found my own heart of Saturday night my way

And damn Tom Waits is brilliant

The White Stripes.

“What kind of cartwheels do I have to pull?
What kind of joke should I lay on her now?
I’m inclined to go finish high school
Just to make her notice that I’m around”

“I Want To Be The Boy - To Warm Your Mothers Heart”

Blake’s choice I couldn’t come up with one.

Peace from Ecuador.

There’s also a song I like by Luther Allison, a blues called “Serious” - it goes on to say “…as a heart attack”

It’s a cool blues, but the official title is “Serious”

You are all doing so well. So many heart songs, who knew. Some of you are definitely cheating though. I have thought of at least three other songs since my original and have not posted it….see I have self control.

I hope to post this iconic list this weekend so please keep hearting me out here.

Why oh why had someone not said “Peace of My Heart”?

Too normal for you?

Oh, wonderful choice. The only Love song that counts for us nowadays is a Swedish one, “Håll Mitt Hjärta” which means “Hold My Heart” with the very popular Swedish artist Björn Skifs.

It’s “our” song. Of course for you hard to understand the text.

YouTube - Håll mitt hjärta

(The rythm is supposed to be heartbeats)
