Of Porcupines and Power

November 14th, 2007 by cooper

I am not a writer, nor do I play one on my blog. The consequence of not being a writer is the infrangible “Wonderland or Not” will continue through the writers’ strike. A strike, by the way, which I assumed started months ago when Heroes just couldn’t seem to get to the friggin point.

— — –

Pia gave Doug an award despite knowing he’ll bristle like a porcupine.

That is courage.

——

We need smarter power, the commission on smart power tells us so, and even though America may be less well regarded today than at any time in its history,” it’s not too late.

“A Smarter, More Secure America”. The study is there in pdf if you care to partake of it.

A paltry contribution I know, but it’s been a busy day.

The compulsion to blog is often significantly greater than the thoughts which propel me to do so, but what’s a girl to do?

I am a writer, but not yet a member of the WGA so my blog shall continue too. However, not being a member of the WGA, I can’t make any promises as to the quality or timeliness of my posts.

That’s the problem of not being in a union. I have no standards I’m contractually obligated to meet.

  2. laketreesNo Gravatar says:

    What defines a writer…or an artist…or a musician?
    it’s odd that you don’t regard yourself as a writer.……because I would disagree.….
I’m not an avid reader any more simply because I choose to paint instead.…
however I am forced by the nature of blogging to read and sometimes write more than I wish to…I’m all for brevity…
I’m not a writer at all.…but you are Cooper ! (IMO)

You, dear lady, certainly are a writer. A writer of wrongs. No, wait, a righter of rongs. No, wait … ah, fergit it. I’ll go grab a picket sign and pretend I know what I’m talking about …

    ;)

Agree with OC. You are a writer. These awards were supposed to be given out in January as The Courtings

You’re “guaranteed to make me write longer comments than the post” “most effective cause writer” “most humorous/irony” and of course “biggest blog whore”

I do give multiple awards as each person is multi-faceted

I closed comments as almost every person I gave them to disdain awards – that says something in itself

But the button is nice. I of course couldn’t copy it correctly

I hope whatever fuels the propeller doesn’t run out of gas.

I know you didn’t start out to “write”, but write you did.

Funny how these things turn out.

I love this. Twice the insight of a normal blog, and three times as much when you write about not having much to say. Alright, time to check in Pia and type flattered gratitude while growling at the screen.

I considered going on strike, but I don’t think anyone would notice.

  8. Jason P.No Gravatar says:

You noticed that too? (Heroes, that is.)

You don’t nearly hear enough about writers behind some of these shows & movies. Some are obviously not going to be top-tier, but at all have a creative bent to life which is enjoyable enough to read.

I don’t really know what defines a writer. Publication on a blog wouldn’t be my first criteria. Making money? (Prostitutes…;) ) Something of value, teaching a lesson or popularity amongst a group of thousands or millions — that may work. The action is only as good as the reaction. Otherwise, why do it?

    Later Coop.

This turned out pretty well for a compulsion turned addiction.

The strike means watching old movies late night.

I was relieved they got to the point this past week. — Heroes.

  10. Mark DykemanNo Gravatar says:

Hah, I love your comment about Heroes. I still like the show, despite its meanderings this season, but yeah, it’s got some problems.

    Good blog!

  11. bullshit. of course you’re a writer.

I shudder to think how LOST is suffering from the strike

  12. piaNo Gravatar says:

Think the definition of a writer is one who loves to put words to paper or to computer screen

Being published – I was often. It didn’t satisfy me as much as writing a good manual that people could actually understand and use – or a good research paper or summary of a person’s life

Then came blogging. finding people like you – that was the ultimate high

I realized several months ago that as much as I want to publish a book and hopefully make a lot of money – more than that I want to write for myself. If people like my writing fine. If they don’t.…

Writing a novel on line satisfies my need to be totally creative

I used to have friends in soaps. They sent me “the bible” or the years storyline and scripts. They wee convinced I could save somebody who had been on the soap for many years job

I couldn’t understand it. The soap was too boring to actually watch – would fast forward and only watch my friend

I began reading soap magazines to see if tI could learn the story from their summaries. Turned out they were equally confused

But I became obsessed – as that’s what I do best – with reading summaries from all soaps

Saw that people were willing to suspend their disbelief for the sake of a story

Being so principled I thought that sick. I also had a hard time understanding the amount of money people made writing dreck –worse I knew somebody who was being paid a million a year not to write – long story

But when I got into this story I thought what if I played with subjects I have some expertise in – people’s behaviors, and the government – and turned it into something

It’s a work in progress and nothing I would try to publish. But it satisfies so many creative needs. And I could only get to this point from having read truly stupid summaries – that people are paid good sums to write — and blogging which gave me the confidence to try anything and put it in print

Are bloggers writers? Under the definition I made yes. But I wouldn’t read 99% of all blogs. You Cooper I would read anytime, anywhere

You don’t use a safety net. And that’s my definition of a truly good writer

Somebody who isn’t scared to experiment, doesn’t write to be popular but to try out ideas and much much more

I’m kind of psyched about the strike as I can’t read or do blogging things before going to sleep – wakes me up

I can watch channel 1,000 or the on-demand stations and catch up with all the movies I haven’t seen

  13. cooperNo Gravatar says:

pia: lol, The button is nice. ;)

oc: Speaking of being a writer.….I’m glad you are finding time to write again.

    G: It is perpetually fueled.

Doug: I’m going over there to make sure you have your award displayed. I got caught up reading your “Disability Blog” yesterday for some reason. I’d n ever really read it before.

coyote: I’m sure someone would complain about it coyote.;)

JasonP: Yea it took until this past Monday to get to the point, it was almost like taking a long awaited poop.

casey: Late night is when I do all my “old mo vie” watching anyway.

Mark: Thanks for stopping in. yes they finally got to the point. I was faithful but annoyed.

EW: You’re writer sweetheart, and you need to do much more.

  14. Oh puh-leeeeeeeze.

    :}

  15. cooperNo Gravatar says:

    Don’t give me that Dedd.

Where is your blog anyway? I’m getting impatient.

  16. heh heh.

    all I meant was — hell, this is one of the few places I actually read regularly. so don’t insult my taste. :}

  17. XineNo Gravatar says:

Coop doth protest too much: You are an amazing and talented writer. Your posts make me think and make me smile. So thank god that no-one can see the look on my face right now!

On the lack of focus/clarity for Heroes — the writer’s lost their focus by bringing in too many characters with competing story-lines. I’ve lost interest and have stopped watching.

  18. cooperNo Gravatar says:

Dedd: I see you failed to answer my question.

Xine: Monday they pulled the mess together, sort of. This is one of two network television shows I watch, the other being BL. I’ll follow it through the last three episodes and see what happens. The new characters without any character development. and while the old characters are still on the foggy side of the line. was a mistake.
