Spam Blogs and Foliage — The Have a Happy Weekend Edition.

October 20th, 2007 by cooper

I can deal with all those spam blogs marauding content from my blog, even though it perturbs the hell out of me. WordPress dot com has become the preferred office building for spam blogs, all stealing content from hundreds of blogs on the web. Your blog too, most likely is being used on some spam blog right now. A blog with tons of ads and usually no way to contact the owner. Most likely, but not always, with comments shut off.

What I can’t deal with is spornograhy blogs using my content, or parts of it. (what else can I call a porn spam blog) Somehow my tantric sex post ended up linked on a couple spam porn blogs — how pleasant for me.

For those using WP2.3 Adam pointed out this exploit in which spammers can now add themselves to your blog roll. God will those people ever leave us alone? He has a link posted to a fix. If you are concerned, or have been hit by the blogroll spam scam, head over there.

Another distinct advantage of having my blog roll on a separate page, it’s a less alluring placement for spammers.

LAPD May Have Erred in Ellen Dog Case

“TMZ has spoken with law enforcement sources — who now seem to acknowledge the LAPD may have made a mistake by letting Marina Batkis, owner of Mutts and Moms, take back the dog Ellen DeGeneres gave to her hairstylist.

I love you Ellen but, you’re sucking up important news time. The little girl will get over it — that which does not kill us makes us stronger.

The virulence of people reactions to this story is pretty funny. I’m a dog lover from way back, but if people could just muster up all that indignation at things like poverty their energy would be better spent.

This weekend is peak foliage here. Though the color is muted compared to some years, the colors are finally here and will be at their vivid best this weekend. I’ve sometimes long for Vermont this time of year though I remember it vaguely at this point in time, more like a fuzzy painting than anything else. I’m going to get an early morning hike in tomorrow in order to soak it all in. I hope you all get to enjoy this weekend in some special way as well.

Saying for the weekend:

“J’ai une grenouille dans mon bidet!”

I thought the dog thing as little owverdone.

No one wants my blog, not een a sporn blog.

    Pardon, my French is rusty.

I’m on dot come, I think they would have fixed this by now, I hope.

Being on the sporn blog had to hurt. ;)

I love my dogs, sometimes more than people, so I see the point.

    Sorry about the frog.

Spam, spam, spam everywhere. I kind of miss the days when you were Queen of Courting moderation and I had to rescue you

Spammers love my blog title and email address. About once or twice a month I have to delete at least 20,000 “returned” spam.

    Thanks for this important PSC

  4. I can’t say I’m surprised. I still think that WordPress was responsible for your blogspot blog going under.

  5. DougNo Gravatar says:

How do you know when you’ve been plagiarized?

Et que’est-ce que c’est ‘granouillw’ et porquoi tu ne le gardes pas?

  6. sauerkrautNo Gravatar says:

The Ellen thing is overdone. I was tempted to blog about it but I fortunately was too busy.

Sauerkraut is a “rescued” cat. Not giving him was part of the deal in receiving him. I do not understand people who take animals with no apparent intention but to give the critter away to some other person. Reminds me too much of my days as a foster kid. It sucked big time being schlepped from one house to the next; I imagine it’s the same for dogs and cats. Which is why I have no sympathy whatsoever for Ellen G but plenty for poor Iggy — who probably is wondering when he will next be shipped to yet another human.

I caught on to the blogroll problems with wordpress fairly quickly. Surprising, I suppose, but it really did not take me all that long to remove the blogroll and replace it with rolls dedicated to certain causes. As long as I keep those small, I get no forced additions. As you’ve noticed, I do sometimes get the spam pingbacks. As long as they stay at that level, I don’t mind. Askimet catches most of the others. Frankly, I think the Litterbox is boring and intermittent enough to keep the spammers uninterested.

As for myblog, well, I’ve let that be dormant for a couple months now. Not surprisingly, the spam coming into the Litterbox has been reduced during that same time. Co-inkeedink? I think not. …

Meant to write “not giving him away was part of the deal.” meh.

The weekend was beautiful, for foliage and golf. You’re right, it’s not as vivid as it could be  — drought and all that.

I get some spam but haven’t had problems with spammers trying add their links — yet.

Don’t think I have anything worthy of a sporn blog.;)

The Ellen thing was overkill for sure.

  9. MarvalusNo Gravatar says:

Surely the Ellen thing was overkill…but the whole thing was handled badly…from the way the adoption agency took the cops over and to get the dogs back to Ellen crying on her show…this could have been solved by a simple phone call…“Ellen, you signed a contract and you can’t give the dog to the family…if you don’t want it, or it doesn’t mesh with your kitties (pun intended), you need to bring it back to the store.” End of drama…

Akismet has caught most of my spam…I troll every day to look for those bastards to invade my blogroll…

  10. JasonNo Gravatar says:

Heh. Porn spam. It’s one of those things ya just have to live with, in Cyberspace. Fortunately, with better information literacy training springing up, well, the topical-bombing may one day prove unprofitable, and they’ll abandon it.

  11. coyotemikeNo Gravatar says:

You’ll have to excuse me, as I speak no French, but does that say “There is a frog in my bidet”?

I still think that those stories that are best suited for seperate channels (E! for example) would just stay on those, so they can be avoided by those who do not wish to view such non-news. Where is the channel for people who don’t give a flying-monkey’s-doodle about celebrities and their dramas?

  12. GNo Gravatar says:

I love my dog, even though he belongs to my roommate.
I’d cry, on television, if they took him away. If they’d let me.
    Yea, it was too much.

    Sporn blogs?

Dump the bidet, and send me that tee-shirt.

Ohio looks about as colorful as it is going to. Some parts nicer than others. I don’t get out much.

  13. cooperNo Gravatar says:

    Casey: eh mine too.

John: It took be a minute to figure out what that meant..

    Yea that damn frog.

Pia: Welcome miss Pia — I rather like being the town crier.

EW: Well they did put a nice advertising there in place of my blog so there is some reason to think that yes?

Doug: I wasn’t plagiarized any of the times in spam blogs because they link to me or post part of the content but link to where it originally came from. It is still a violation of my copyright…lol. I find it from links in my dashboard or ping backs, which I awalys delete. I have a digital fingerprint plugin to check for plagiarism. I also have a copyright notice in my feed.

SK: My blogroll on the back pages prevents that and I delete users who register from strange email addresses. My spam catcher works well so I’ve had not problems with that. The spam blogs are a different story.

Jacob: yeah overkill works well here.

marvalus: Yea, she should have just stayed off the tube. Akismet is good to me but it doesn’t prevent the spam blogs from taking the stuff. Those things just piss me off.

jason: Not spam porn my posts being posted on a porn spam blog. They steal the content but link to the original source me so it seem like no stealing to them.

Mike: yes it does and that is because…no seriously it’s a saying used for a variety of reasons regarding the French the French are kind of proud of it by now even though there is some indication it is a slight.… …there are like a hundred or so suppositions as to where it originated, but a friend of mine from school who happened to be French sent me…like ten of those tee-shirts.

G: Yea you would. I forgot I did promise you one didn’t I?

  14. kellypeaNo Gravatar says:

I’ve been thinking of having my blogroll on another page…but more for aesthetics. Askimet catches about 99% of my spam — which is quite nice. It’s my email that’s burdened with it.

Yes, I’ve seen the foliage. My mom is enjoying her first fall in VA. The trees are just about the same color as the wildfires here.

This happened to me for the first time the other day. Some site about hacking pilfered a piece I did on the Wikiscanner. But in all fairness, I stole the idea from Steven Colbert.
