The Lights Will Stay On

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

I go to sleep, before
the devil wakes
and I wake up, before
the angels take

It’s been dark here lately and often depressing.
I’m sure it’s evident to everyone there are a multitude of things which bother me.

all my worldly desires
all my yardsticks of fear
all my secrets untold
all my motives unclear

Today it was a debate full of pandering politicians, the Pope, of the Church which hid well for years all those pedophiles, tells pharmacist’s to make a conscientious objection to avoid dispensing emergency contraception. Talk about conscience.

hangin’ down in the fire
burnin’ them higher
won’t take them away from here
and long after we’re gone
the lights will stay on
the lights will stay on

And the there is Google, insidious, now sucking in my Verizon, not that Verizon didn’t own me already – I’m now to be dually owned.

watched the city … city of crows
watched them fly, watched
’em all flyin’ low
out above the flood plain
just above the dirt road
they were hungry as winter,
hungry as us
not afraid to be flyin’, not
afraid to be lost

Endless sadness, endless tragedy.

Yet I am not so sad.

and long after we’re gone
the lights will stay on
the lights will stay on

I’m not sure how much of it matters in the end.

and if you bury me, add
three feet to it
one for your sorrow, two
for your sweat
three for the strange
things we never forget

I’m just not sure.

and long after we’re gone
the lights will stay on
the lights will stay on

You all give me hope, just by the reading of you.

and long after we’re safe
the lights will not fade
the lights will not fade

And so for you, a more uplifting beginning to this day.
