Woman Nation?

The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women

You’ve heard of woman nation,
Well, thats coming, baby.

I found this at a feminist site I peruse. There was a comment wondering where these women would fit on a list of most powerful people? I too wonder. Someday there will be such a list, and women may well prove dominant. Look at this list. Notice that power, in the majority of cases, is still money. No matter what gender you are talking about in the end it is all about the money.

You’ve heard of the law of selection,
Well, thats how were gonna do it, baby.
We allow men who wanna join us
The rest can just stay by themselves.

This long weekend for me will be about catching up. No way will I brave the holiday traffic to head west into the mountains. The traffic will be interminable. I spent last weekend at a state park hiking and rock climbing. I fell down a rather irritable mountain — yes almost straight down but with just enough of an incline to cause a rather gross and now rather crusty abrasion along the whole of my right leg. It was great though. One of the guys I went with actually fractured his ankle just walking along a rather rocky path. Who’s the man? Me obviously.

This weekend I’m going to watch tennis, hike locally, and finish some reading. I’ve been appointed to the board of a local Visual Arts Education Center and will consequently be attending an event there tomorrow. I’m going to hit up some yard sales.

Two thousand years of male society,
Laying fear and tyranny.
Seeking grades and money,
Clinging to values vain and phony.

I hear the crabs are good this weekend. I don’t really care, but I imagine I will hear that several more times this weekend.

Wonderland or Not
will lighten it up for the weekend posting nonsensical dribble for your entertainment. Some links, some blog suggestions and some bad poetry is always a possibility. For those off on a last jaunt before summer ends. Take care.

Do you know that one day you lost your way, man?
Do you know that some day you have to pay, man?
Have you anything to say, man, except
Make no mistake about it, I’m the president, you hear?
I wanna make one thing clear, I’m the president, you hear?

Bless you Yoko but…

Let’s not talk of selection
it’s about who pays for the election
for us, a large bankroll
gets us out of that black hole

  • Well of course it’s going to be all about the money if it’s Forbes magazine, run by Steve “what do you mean a flat tax would favor the rich?” Forbes. though probably better than the Oprah-worship that those articles tend to present

I maintain that Yoko’s best performance was in the music video for “Instant Karma!” =P

Hope your leg feels better and that people don’t bother you about the crabs.

  • Believe me it’s all about money no matter which publication you are looking at. I probably should have used the term “perceived power” in opposition to “personal power”, as I don’t believe personal power comes from money.

  • Dribble or drivel?

I find the 100 Most Powerful Women list disappointing. Maybe because I’d like to dislike the rich and powerful equally. :)

  • Definitely dribble. A little bit of this. A little bit of that. As opposed to a whole lot of one thing.

Nothing here is ever drivel. In my opinion of course.

The people reading this are free to disagree.

  • You are on the money, as usual.

It pays to make the distinction between perceived and personal power. My question: Which one is real power? Is there a place where they merge and if so where?

It also pays to make a distinction between dribble and drivel. You did it nicely.

Yoko Ono has always makes me shiver with every note that she delivers.…

  • Totally agree. Power/control is all about economics. It’s a class struggle to be sure.

Ouch! I had a similar experience on a bike. Reading that made my eye start twitching and my stomach hurt. I feel for ya bud, literally. (Ack I just used “literally” in a sentence). You da man!

    Conga-rats on your appointment! :)

What does the board decide on anyways? Tell us more!

  • Perception of money being power is not always a deception. If we are what we think we are, and we think power is money, do we not become powerful when we have money? I’m not speaking of myself. Just a question.

Yoko, I always liked her. I watched some show when very young on HBO. The show made her look evil. I liked her then, I like her now. I always have preferred the eccentric.

You will be the Yoko Ono of someone someday. I would place money on it, if I had money. If I had money I’d be powerful. In the meantime I have to get my power elsewhere. Entirley possible, just more difficult.

I don’t know if I can embed here. If this messes up just delete it.

  • Money = Power + Power = Money IMO
What a stunningly creative site with really absorbing content.……the only problem I had was reading my name and email in the comment boxes.….
    regards Kim

  • You don’t need to lighten up on our account, but it certainly sounds like you could use the rest. Enjoy the time and I’ll be sure to check in to see how the rest of your posting goes.

  • I used to think that when women began to make it in large numbers – status and money wouldn’t be confused with power

That’s always been my problem with Maureen Dowd, she doesn’t look beyond status to see how so called ordinary women are the true influencers

I count on you to be one of the women to change that. I really do

The weekend Betty Friedan died, a 40 year old woman lawyer in New York who played a big part in how children at risk in New York are treated also died. As New York influences other places.…her death got almost no coverage. And in reality in 15 years she did as much or more concrete things for people than Friedan did. Not taking away from her, just saying that women in the trenches should be recognized, and their power acknowledged

Am writing the stories I am now because damn it’s hard to be a strong woman who isn’t a high status one

  • I agree. It starts in high school when the guy with the most expensive hot car gets all the girls, even if he is a total asshole.

Don’t lighten up on my account I can take it.

As if Yoko Ono could break up The Beatles.;) Talk about women power.….…..

Stay off those mountain and have a weekend.

  • The most powerful woman in the world is the one you saw first that morning.

Condi came ahead of money so money isn’t everything here. Where did Alicia Keys come in?

  • Perception is everything, except when you look in the mirror.Money is power in this country. Without money those in power would not be in power, as long as that is the case nothing changes.

  • Alicia Keys… now, there is a woman with power. In her voice, anyways. Much more than Yoko ever had.

Power is perception. Make due with it what you will, but I still think the person who has a sense of who he or she is is that person with the most power.

And the most honesty. The rest is little more than regurgitated bullshit.
