It’s such a tired game
Will it ever stop?
How will this all
play out of sight
out of mind
With the world being so overwhelmingly brutal, and the news battering us with fear it’s hard to think and harder to write anything of consequence.
This leads me to eschew all serious writing for the weekend as it sometimes seems pointless.
There’s more of course.
By now we should know
how to communicate
Instead of coming to blows,
We’re on a roll
And there ain’t no stopping us now
We’re burning under control
Isn’t it strange how we’re all
Burning under the same sun?
By now and say, it’s a war for peace
It’s the same old game
But do we really want to play?
We could close our eyes it’s still there
We could say it’s us against them
We could try but nobody wins
I’m going to a wedding tomorrow. Is this also pointless? To me yes, but to the people getting married probably not so I am going and will enjoy the moment for them.
Gravity has got a hold on us all
We could try to put it out
But it’s a growing flame
Using fear as fuel
Burning down our name
And it won’t take too long
Words all burn the same
And who are we going to blame now?
I’ve updated my profile somewhat and added pages, one of which is books I suggest or am reading, and will change it monthly, or at least yearly.
Eventually this template will be changed as it does not validate.
If you’re in this weekend and need things to read.
From Dean J Saitta — ( who happens to be one of the 101 most dangerous academics in this country according to David Horwitz) — an editorial which can be obtained at his website in full pdf — for those of you that don’t have access to Anthropology Today. Higher Education and the Dangerous Professor: Challenges for Anthropology .
I found it interesting for those inclined in that direction; it was interesting to me because I see anthropology as a necessary discipline, one which should be juxtaposed to whatever life we are living, and a necessary element of academic study. I find anthropology ever expanding in it’s usefulness when dealing with questions of humanitarianism.
Anyhow I have no intention of analyzing the bureaucracies of academia, or on pointing out the misallocation of academic energies, but it is an interesting read.
By now it’s beginning to show
A number of people are numbers that ain’t coming home
I could close my eyes it’s still there
Close my mind be alone
I could close my heart and not care
But gravity has got a hold on us all
It’s a terrific price to pay
But in the true sense of the word
Are we using what we’ve learned?
In the true sense of the word
Are we losing what we were?
Some fun links:The Visual Directory: The Post Secret of words in the real world.
How to write in plain English : Something I promise myself I am going to check into soon.
Academic Secrets Blog : as one poster put it…
” and this is an opportunity to point out that academic secret is a place where you could develop a reputation as an outspoken political academic without having that reputation affect your other reputation.
And don’t forget to check out Taking Place where it appears everyone has retired..but where vegankid posts a class analysis of “The New Miami Vice “, and I posted a small human rights notation yesterday.
It’s such a tired game
Will it ever stop?
It’s not for me to say
Is it in our blood
Or is just our fate?
And how will this all play out
of sight, out of mind
Who are we going to blame all in all?
It’s such a crying, crying, crying shame
Until then .…
Decent quality sound.

Writing in plain English is something I try to avoid. I’ve always blanched at keeping things simple for the reader. I always thought it was the reader’s job to try and keep up with me.
In much the same manner I don’t think the customer is always right or one’s boss is always right, I don’t always think it should be about coddling the reader. I mean – half of the knowledge about vocabulary, writing style, and old-fashioned composition was because I read something that wasn’t simple and that challenged me to understand more clearly what the author was attempting to accomplish.
The whole K.I.S.S. principle is one of my greatest pet peeves.
I’ll think I’ll stick to writing in Surfspeak. It’s way better, for sure. Have a killer time at the wedding and don’t get too bombed! ;)
Are you trying to make us fall down enlightened holes?
Enjoy the wedding. Alica. A harmless diversion for sure.
Oh, and I like the new bio, I’ll bring you an apple.
Yea I read “Anthropology Today” routinely he says churlishly.
Kick ass profile , book list noce idea.
Interesting opinoon piece.
Sadly not one of my professors made the list.
Here is to hoping we both make that list some day.
Visual Directory = cool.
Did a fletcher/kincaid test thing. Found out that I write at a fifth grade level
Am beginning to get into this vacation/relaxing thing
Can’t wait to read the new bio
And to continue on my fifth grade level, believe that anthropolgy is very necessary as in order to understand people now we need to understand cultures that came before
Used to know all about the Zapotec and Mixtec Indians in Oaxaca – was much smarter when I was 16
Hope that you’re having a wonderful time at the wedding
had to say yes, 21 girl with a blog – will allow you that as yes, you found humanists – the only rational explanation to an irrational world
Gawd, it was something my father and I could actually agree on
[…] This is going to be a patented/trademarked Pia/Cooper type post. Well, Cooper does new posts but goes from subject to subject. And is constantly evolving […]
have fun at the wedding. And don’t get married.
Love the enhanced bio and won’t even complain about the book recommendations.
Eric Carle: that listing seems appropriate for someone who paints.
humanist would be what I would have guessed if i has been asked to guess.
I wanted to mention that that froogle list is almost two years old. ;)
I kinda married Loverboy 4 times and am not into weddings as is, believe it or not. My fave one was when we were alone, with our Jewish judge in our SF apt, the bnoy napping and the girl watching TV and no spectators. NOW that is how I like it! No fancy crap p-lease!
Anyway, have fun… at least ’tis not you! And I mean that in a good way!
I used to read Cary Tennis before discovering the blogosphere and before people could comment. It was interesting and voyeuristic you see.
I personally am all for Brazilian waxes but were anyone to tell me how I would have to be down there they definitely would not be instructed to “eat it”… ha, ha, haaa!
Oh well. My “muffin” and I get to serve it to someone with the appropriate sweet totooth.
mojo:i agree although you find as I do I am sure even though we write different types of blogs that people often don’t get it.
Leigh: the wedding was one of the better ones I have attended.
protagoras: sometimes any hole will do.
Dawg: I love apples.
id: churlishly?????????????????
pia : hope the vaca is still marvelous and the wedding was grand.
coyote: don’t worry about that.
joe: you’re such a guesser.
mizzy b: i go for the free food and alcohol. and in this case a actually good band and some crazy drama.
I’m beat I’ll be around sometime this week but it has been crazy here.
.…..not!
