Virgin Pledges, Contra Contrapception and…My School Sucks.

I had a very long post which included references to .….….….….….

A Harvard study shows that Many Youths Disregard Their Virginity Pledges.

Thanks to Indie who sent me this article several days ago but I never did manage to get to it.

A lot of brilliant commentary was put into my op-ed on the post as well as to my commentary in regard to this Contra Contraception, from the NYT magazine. ;)

Sadly I wrote it out, lost it got it back posted it and the block quotes were screwy and I couldn’t get them right so I just said fuck it.

Yup.

All you need to know in regard to the first is that abstinence pledges do  not work no matter what these people try to tell you. Your kids are doing it so it would be wise to prepare them for that. You certainly shouldn’t be willing to risk the alternative.

All you need to know from the second is that  Americans are still trying to decide if it is alright to have sex so they will never really be able to agree on all the issues in between.

The NTY article is a good read but frankly all the pontification going on all over the place about it is quite enough so I am just giving you the link.

I’m out. I have to go look at an apartment.

For your entertainment as well:

Students at my school are just as pathetic as students at other schools. ( I never said they weren’t)

The nyu livejournal presents.……until someone gets totally embarrassed and removes it.

Talk among yourselves.

  • That nyu livejournal link was funny…

Sometimes all you can say is fuck it. One of my favorite phrases.

  • Okay Alice – which comments did you make in the NYU livejournal?

Was going to post the NYT magazine article – still feel guilty that I didn’t – so I’m glad that you did – should probably put them in a page “most stupid and unrealistic thing I have read in oh about a week”

Ultra Orthodox Jews are only allowed to have sex to procreate – don’t know the stats now – but at one time the had an immensely high rate of AIDS – apparently the only have sex thing applies just to wives-not prostitutes

It’s probably better for humanity that I never had kids as I would supply the condoms – and very very hypothetically speaking the pot – would want my children to understand that despite what the government says – there are good and bad drugs – and would rather have them stoned then drunk

Probably just committed blogger and book suicide – but I hate this weather and am in a very weird mood

  • Oh and am sure that your post was more than brilliant — lately you have developed a whole new blogging style – have to think of a good name for it

Love having blogger friends who couldn’t care less about adhering to standard blog format – as it’s only nine years old – it’s morphing all the time – don’t understand why more people don’t see that — but you probably never even thought about it, because you so obviously think for yourself and don’t care what anybody thinks

  • “you probably never even thought about it, because you so obviously think for yourself and don’t care what anybody thinks” that’s what I love about Coop.
Well, and pia too…along with an assortment of our blogging buddies.

I think pia is awesome for what she thinks, especially the whole condom and pot thing.…never do hear of anyone “high” driving and killing innocent people…
    I’m just sayin…

  • I think I posted on this a while back as well. Personally I never make vows never to do X anymore. I’ve already broken most of the ones I did make I think. Intoxicating substances and the like. Never made one in regards to sex though, which is actually kind of funny, because, well… yeah.

    (possibly an inside joke)

You didn’t give us a topic!

  • Good luck finding a place!

  • Ha,
Oberlin had one online, can’t rememebr if it was facebook related or what, but it was pretty funny. Good reads for those breaks between three hour study sessions.

The contra conception article is quite intense.

  • Alice — check out Slate today.
    this article
posted on Slate today. I saved a draft post of it and will publish
tomorrow. It’s incredibly disturbing and has to do with what you’re
    discussing here.

  • Um…I have no idea if that last comment made it. However, check this
link out when you get a chance (do your comments not support html?)

    http://www.slate.com/id/2141183/?nav=tap3

It has to do with what you posted about here. It should make you
    angry.

  • Wish I’d seen that, Robotman. Would be interesting to see what the old hometown/alma mater was up to.
Of course give kids condoms. You don’t remember how excruciatingly embarrassing it was to buy them when YOU were a kid?
But pot, actually people do die in car accidents in which pot is a contributing factor, and it’s worse for the lungs than alcohol and stays in the system longer. And even though they’re silly, drug laws are a consideration here. I think the kids are on their own when it comes to getting their fixes.

  • Alcohol is more dangerous and more people die in alcohol related accidents.
Pot does stay in your system longer and prolonged continual use is not recommended but small amounts for recreational purposes
in quietude and the proper company is safe. Unless you are one of those people that is prone to addictions of any kind…in that case it kind of sucks for you. The legality is the issue.

I never bought condoms as a kid.

Cooper — your school is a little obsessed with masturbation, not getting enough sex, not getting any sex, and sex in general.

I will come visit any time.

  • Abstinence pledges will be meaningless as long as there are more words than “No.” Actually, I was going to say uncles but that would have been crass and offensive.

Anyway, your brilliance is implicit when not explicit.

  • Abstinence pledges stem from a crazy fear of sex in general. A comprehensive sex education is the only thing that can ensure safety and responsibilty and the more open a society the more responsible the individuals. People are going to want to do the deed.

I waited but only because I knew myself and I knew what would and how to satisfy my needs and for me it was to be with the right person. Had I wanted to fuck away I would have done it and power to me.

Sex is just a beautiful act, a great release but only in the “right hands” and by that I mean that the more an idividual is educated and in the know the better it is in all aspects. The only crazies so scared of sex and anything to do with sexuality and sensuality seem to be the extreme religious ones amongst us.

I love sex. I will keep on having sex. I will be safe and I am secure in the knowledge and background that drives me and nope, I have no shame. I wish more people felt the same and if they don’t it is a fault of our society’s… ties in to may other issues, especially our rape culture mentality, to be so scared and ashamed of sexuality.…

Gotta jet to take the kids to school and go teach a class but hope to read the links later (all this and the girl did not read the links? You know it! ;) )

    Good luck apartment hunting!

  • cowgirl: I know what ya mean.

    pia:

I’ll never tell. pia it was a huge article and the talking points from it alone would have made a small book. Other than clipping parts of it and pasting them and making little notations on it there was realy nothing to do but point it out. Sometimes some of these sites get so caught up in their opinon they can’t see beyond it all and it is boring. It is worth the read for everyone though.

I was kidding about the brilliant. Sometimes I worry that people think I mean what I say. I mean stupid people. Not you.

Are there some rules I have been missing?

Cowgirl: or riding horses high and killing people either. ;0

Wombat: Well.…yeah. I think you all do fine just making up your own.

    Leigh: yea…decisions…decisions.…

Robotman: I never saw Oberlin’s but I think that is how the nyu one got started. there is more stuff in regard to nyu somewhere else but I never did my space and did face book for only a week a long time ago and then deleted my account… G is a face book addict.

jeremy: That is infuriating. I may have to do something on it. I will check out what you write tomorrow. It at least needs to be made public public public.

weirsdo:.Laws are a consideration. It is not for kids to do so though. We were always taught to obey the law.
Yes, well in regard to drugs …we would definitely been on our own with no parental support or tolerance as per underage drinking or pot etc. May or may not follow the rules but statistically kids from families that have consequences for drinking or pot etc , whose parents take a hard line will do it anyway but will most likely not over do it, drive while doing it or get caught. That is a statistic from way back I have to find it again. In other words saying no we don’t tolerate that and if you get put in jail or kill someone that is a decision you made a bad one..and it’s not our problem. Having real consequences for infractions of rules etc. Works to make kids at least think and practice some degree of caution when …doing the ” bad things”. It doesn’t stop the behavior.

Abstinence on the other hand…what is wrong with these people?

jake: What school isn’t? It’s all that abstinence education catching up with them.

    Dawg:which do you prefer?

Mizzy Bohem: lol damn the time difference.

  • I’m surprised the Shakers aren’t making a comeback these days.

  • damn it…you made me have to register with wordpress…it’s okay.
..cursid you for all the more spam…

    anyways..

College students have sex?…GASP!!! OMG OMG ..OMG!!

You also mean kids, under 12 years too right?…Cause uhm, I think
the genral public has officially tuned out reality a LONG time ago.

  • I am
glad for once that you didn’t write anything that made me think.
The post on you darfur blog is making me think .

The NYU thread was a nice diversion.
I liked the spelling thread and the suggestion in another thread
    that
“This whole thread needs a big party for everyone who wants
to make out/have sex/whatever to just go do it.”

    Those were the days. ;)

  • Indie: Their funiture I like. Their ideology needs to stay where it is. Whereever that is these days.……oh Wahington I forgot.

Bennet: It is working splendidly at the rare but explicit ” cunts” that I have to dleete quickly have disappeared because it is not worth it to go through all that work just to hurl names, and the viagra and xanax spam is almost all gone. I’m sorry for it but it is no worse than me having to word verificate at every blooger with pldhje get it worng and have to do it again. ;)
Thepublic has surely tuned out Bennet and yes last I heard college kids did have sex as do high school kids.

averagebusinessman: It is surely a diversion. I’m tired of the thinking myself.

  • Are you still bored? Cause your wish is my command! ;)

  • […] And he’s very funny. For proof there’s the mastication IM. It’s going to be a blogging classic. […]
